A Death Stranding Anime Is Coming
Hideo Kojima is one of the greatest video game designers ever, but he always has his sights set beyond consoles. Less than two years after announcing an A24-produced film adaptation of his 2020 game Death Stranding, Kojima has revealed that the Death Stranding visual universe will also include an anime. Speaking with Vogue Japan (thanks VGC), Kojima said that video games are just one storytelling medium through which he wants to channel his creativity. The man known as one of the most succinct movie buffs, with his one sentence film reviews of everything from the terrible Madame Web to the sensational Sinners, is ready to transform his beloved game in ways only film and animation can do. The way he explains it, the upcoming Death Stranding adaptations will be more inspired by the game, rather than a faithful retelling. 'When it comes to film adaptations of games,' Kojima told Vogue (via machine translation), 'there have been recent [shows] like The Last of Us that keep the plot of the original intact, and films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie that are more like a service to game fans. Each of these works has its own merits, but as a film lover, I want to pursue the expressive potential of cinema.' It's at this point in the interview that Kojima makes the first mention of this anime project. 'I am aiming to make Death Stranding in a way that can only be done as a film, and that will win awards at the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. In fact, we are also currently working on an anime adaptation.' This isn't the first time Kojima has brought one his video game properties into the world of anime. Zone of the Enders: Dolores, I was an anime series released from the world of his gorgeous multi-console third-person shooter Zone of the Enders back in 2001. An anime prequel film, Zone of the Enders: 2167 Idolo, was released six months prior. No release date or timeline has been announced. Still, it's exhilarating to know that one of the most innovative visual storytellers of our time is continuing to expand his creative horizons. For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Box Office: A Minecraft Movie approaches USD 950M, likely to miss billion mark but still leads 2025 Hollywood chart
A Minecraft Movie continues to leave a mark at the global box office, edging closer to the USD 950 million milestone. While it now appears unlikely to reach the coveted billion-dollar mark, the Jared Hess-directed video game adaptation remains the highest-grossing Hollywood release of 2025 so far. Based on Mojang Studios' massively popular sandbox game, A Minecraft Movie released in early April to mixed reviews but exceeded commercial expectations thanks to a robust reception from younger audiences. Despite a lukewarm 48 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a modest 5.7/10 rating on IMDb, the film received an 86 percent audience approval and generated buzz around sequences like the much-anticipated chicken jockey moment. Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, the film has so far collected around USD 940 million worldwide, with USD 420 million from domestic markets and another USD 520 million internationally. The theatrical run began slowing down after Warner Bros pulled the film from over 1,300 US theaters to accommodate its more recent releases. Its recent availability on PVOD platforms has also impacted its box office momentum. Despite missing the million-dollar mark, A Minecraft Movie is a massive win for WB, as before this title, the studio was struggling with the underperformance of Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson and helmed by Bong Joon Ho. A Minecraft Movie now ranks among the top 70 highest-grossing films of all time globally and sits among the studio's 10 most successful theatrical endeavors ever. Had it crossed the billion-dollar threshold, it would have marked the second billion-dollar outing for both Black (The Super Mario Bros. Movie) and Momoa (Aquaman). Adding to its success, the film is slated for a physical media release on June 24, with Blu-ray, DVD, and a limited edition Steelbook version hitting the market. Bonus content includes featurettes like Building the World of Minecraft: Block Party and Block Beats, offering fans a deeper look into the film's production and soundtrack. Looking ahead, a sequel to A Minecraft Movie has been announced, with Warner Bros co-chairs recently confirming that plans for a follow-up are in motion, suggesting the studio is eager to turn the film into a franchise. A Minecraft Movie remains available in select theaters in the US and internationally for those interested.

Elden Ring is Getting a Movie Adaptation Directed by Alex Garland
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors Video games have had a pretty good run in recent years when it comes to film and TV adaptations. Films like Sonic the Hedgehog, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Detective Pikachu, and TV series like The Last of Us have been massive successes, and while not every game to film adaptation is a smash hit, more of them are succeeding than ever before. Now, a new challenger has entered the ring, with a video adaptation of one of the biggest games of the generation. A24 has announced that it will be partnering up with Bandai Namco Entertainment to produce a live-action film based on Elden Ring, the massive action RPG from legendary developer FromSoftware. The film is set to be written and directed by Alex Garland, with Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, George R.R. Martin, and Vince Gerardis acting as producers and presumably executive producers. A screenshot from Elden Ring showing an armored person facing off against a rogue-like character with wolves by their side. A screenshot from Elden Ring showing an armored person facing off against a rogue-like character with wolves by their side. Bandai Namco Alex Garland is best known for his work writing films like 28 Days Later and Dred, and for directing films like Civil War, Warfare, and Men. Peter Rice has worked with Garland on a number of films, including Warfare and 28 Years Later. Few details are known about the upcoming film, including a release date, cast, or plot details, but it's expected that it will likely follow a similar plotline to the Elden Ring game, which was penned in part by George R.R. Martin, explaining his involvement in the film. Elden Ring itself is a pretty big deal — it was released back in early 2022, and quickly became one of the biggest games of the year. A tough-as-nails action adventure game, like most of FromSoftware's games, the game has shipped over 30 million copies to date. It comes after a slew of other video game adaptation announcements, including a release date for Nintendo's live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, which is set to be released in 2027. NBCUniversal also accidentally leaked the name of the Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel, which is coming in 2026.

Box Office: Sinners crushes records with USD 1.8M 5th Wednesday, eyes USD 280M plus domestic mark amid delayed digital release
Ryan Coogler's supernatural horror epic Sinners continues its powerful theatrical run, pulling in a staggering USD 1.8 million on its fifth Wednesday, marking the second biggest fifth Wednesday ever for an R-rated film at the domestic box office. The Michael B. Jordan starrer now stands at a USD 246.4 million U.S. cume and is projected to cross the USD 250 million mark as early as Friday in the States. The fifth-week midweek performance places Sinners just behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie (USD 2M) as the second-biggest fifth Wednesday ever for an April release, a remarkable feat considering the film's genre and rating. Even more impressive is the fact that it tops previous R-rated benchmarks set by Oppenheimer (USD 1.3M), The Passion of the Christ (USD 1.6M), and Deadpool & Wolverine (USD 1.6M). The tight 20.8 percent drop from the previous Wednesday showcases the film's strong legs, bolstered by stellar word of mouth and limited competition before the Memorial Day weekend. The decision to postpone the film's digital release to June 3 has given it added presence in theaters, where it recently wrapped up its IMAX run. Directed, produced, and written by Coogler, Sinners is set in 1932 Mississippi and follows twin criminal brothers, Smoke and Stack — both portrayed by Jordan — who return to their hometown to start new lives but confront an ancient evil force instead. The ensemble cast includes Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku, Delroy Lindo, and Jayme Lawson. Ludwig Göransson, a frequent Coogler collaborator, composed the score and also served as an executive producer. Developed by Coogler's Proximity Media, the film was picked up by Warner Bros. Pictures after a heated bidding war. Shot from April to July 2024, Sinners debuted stateside on April 18 to widespread critical acclaim and has since grossed USD 321 million worldwide, making it the sixth-highest-grossing film of the year globally. With a current trajectory pointing to a USD 280 million domestic finish, and possibly more depending on theater retention and continued audience interest. Sinners is not only Coogler's latest success but also one of the most lucrative original horror films in recent memory.
