Fabrizio Romano CONFIRMS Liverpool move for 'one of the best' if Alexander Isak fails
Liverpool would absolutely love to sign Alexander Isak. The Swede is their top target and has been all year long.
However, this is an incredibly difficult deal to get done. Newcastle United do not want to sell the player and Isak is busy trying to force his way out.

That's the only way this gets over the line, essentially. Everyone seems to be aware of it, too, and Isak's lack of playing time in pre-season certainly suggests he could move.
But there remains the case where Liverpool fail to sign Isak and he remains at Newcastle. It's a very real possibility, in fact, and the Magpies' failure to sign a suitable replacement increases the chances of him staying.
And so, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool do have a backup plan.

Fabrizio Romano confirms backup plan
Romano gave an update on his YouTube channel late on Saturday where he discussed Liverpool's plan. If Isak isn't on his way to Merseyside, they'll push for Bradley Barcola.
'Liverpool maintain their focus on Alexander Isak because we know this appreciation for Barcola," he said. "We know this story about Barcola.
"I told you in the past few days if they can't get Isak, Barcola will be the top target for Liverpool. But at the moment their focus remains at least this week — we will see what happens next week — but this week their focus remains on Isak.

Aussie veteran batters make hay on county circuit
Marcus Harris and Peter Handscomb have continued their productive English county summers, the two veteran Australian internationals both producing fine captain's knocks in the One-Day Cup. Handscomb, who's had a fine season leading Leicestershire to the top of division two of the County Championship, had a landmark Sunday, scoring his third hundred of the season while going past 20,000 career runs in all forms of the game. Alas, the 34-year-old couldn't end his big day with what he really wanted as Leicester were edged out by three wickets at Bristol by a Gloucestershire side featuring his old international colleague Cameron Bancroft. Captains knock of 95 from our Aussie skipper! 🫡🇦🇺🌹 #RedRoseTogether — Lancashire Cricket (@lancscricket) August 10, 2025 But 33-year-old Harris, who was entrusted mid-season with taking the reins at struggling Lancashire, had much to smile about as he cracked a match-winning 95 in their two-wicket victory over Somerset at Taunton. Handscomb has had a terrific summer at Grace Road, having notched a couple of championship centuries and been widely praised for his shrewd captaincy. His 107 off 125 balls, featuring nine fours and a six over long-off to reach three figures, was the Victorian's ninth list-A hundred and looked well set to earn Leicester a win in England's premier 50-over competition as they amassed 7-285. Scoring a brilliant 💯 & taking your career runs passed 2️⃣0️⃣,0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ Many congratulations to @leicsccc captain Peter Handscomb ©️ — PCA (@PCA) August 10, 2025 But Gloucestershire, given a bright start by Bancroft (40 off 49) and the brilliant James Bracey (96 off 106 balls), eked their way to victory when rookie batter Tommy Boorman saw them home with 33 not out with nine balls remaining. At Taunton, Harris, who is also closing in on 1000 county championship runs this season, again proved inspirational as he led the chase of Somerset's 7-250 with his eighth score of 50 or more this season with Lancashire. He looked odds-on to record his fourth ton of the summer after cracking seven fours and two sixes, but, off the 99th ball he faced, finally succumbed to the left-arm spin of Lewis Goldsworthy, giving a catch to Kian Roberts at mid-off with five needed. But along with George Balderson, with whom he'd shared a century partnership for the fifth wicket, Harris had set Lancashire on the way to a victory with eight balls to spare. Another Australian in the runs on Sunday was Tasmanian Caleb Jewell, who continued his magnificent summer for Derbyshire with a brisk 60 off 70 balls at the top of their innings against Nottinghamshire at Derby, setting the tone for his side's eventual 127-run win.

Mo Salah Questions UEFA On Death of 'Palestinian Pele': 'How, Where, Why?'
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Mohamed Salah, a forward who plays for Liverpool FC in England and captains the Egyptian national team, queried the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) over its message posted in response to the death of Palestinian player Suleiman al-Obeid. In a message posted to X and then reposted across his social media, Salah wrote: "Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?" Newsweek reached out to UEFA and Liverpool FC by email, and to Mohamed Salah's agent through social media, outside of normal business hours on Sunday afternoon for comment. Why It Matters Salah has become one of – if not the – most prominent Muslim players in world soccer, with Saudi Arabia's Sports Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal calling Salah "the most high-profile Muslim player in the world." Liverpool fans have nicknamed Salah "the Egyptian king," and his popularity in his home country led to him receiving votes in the 2018 Egyptian presidential election as devoted fans spoiled their ballots and wrote in his name. Salah has previously called for more humanitarian aid into Gaza, urging such efforts as early as the first weeks after the October 7 Hamas attack as Israel began its retaliation. Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images What To Know UEFA on Friday paid tribute to al-Obeid, 41, in a post in which they wrote: "Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the 'Palestinian Pele.' A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times." Some criticized UEFA for what they viewed as a vague message that avoided discussing the reports that Obeid was killed when an Israeli tank allegedly shelled an area in which people had gathered to receive humanitarian aid, according to Reuters, citing Obeid's widow Doaa al-Obeid. The Obeid family's home was destroyed earlier this year in bombardments, forcing them to live in tents in the ruins of Gaza City, where many gathered and have awaited humanitarian aid as famine spreads across the enclave. Salah responded to UEFA's post by asking for more information about Obeid's death, specifically, "how he died, where, and why?" Can you tell us how he died, where, and why? — Mohamed Salah (@MoSalah) August 9, 2025 The initial UEFA post as of Sunday evening received over 20,000 comments, 25,000 reposts, and 113,000 likes, while Salah's post – made just one day later – received over 25,000 comments, 365,000 reposts, and 1.3 million likes, and even prompted a response from the Israeli military who said they would "take a closer look" at the incident. Obeid was dedicated to his craft and planned to play until he was 50, "training every day and never stopped, not a single day," according to his widow. "Even during the crisis of war, in the midst of rockets, shelling and mass killing, he would go play. He used to gather his friends and loved ones and go play with them," she said. Many athletes have been killed in Gaza during Israel's campaign, with some reports saying hundreds of soccer players – many of them children – among the dead. Khalil Mazraawi/AFP via Getty Images What People Are Saying Israeli military spokesperson Nadav Shoshani in response to Salah's post wrote on X: "Hey Mohamed, After an initial review, we found no records of any incidents involving Suleiman al-Obeid. In order to take a closer look, we need more details." Mohamed Salah in previous posts on social media, according to The Guardian: "What is clear now is that humanitarian aid to Gaza must be allowed immediately. The people there are in terrible conditions. The scenes at the hospital last night were horrifying. The people of Gaza need food, water and medical supplies urgently. I'm calling on the world leaders to come together to prevent further slaughter of all innocent souls. Humanity must prevail."
