Phillies sweep Rangers with Wheeler's strong outing and Sosa's homer

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Zack Wheeler struck out seven and allowed three hits, Edmundo Sosa homered, and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Texas Rangers 4-2 on Sunday to sweep the three-game series. Wheeler (10-5) had six or more strikeouts for the 19th straight start this season, with his last outing with less than six coming on April 13 when he had three against St. Louis. Trailing 2-0 early, the Phillies answered in the fourth with an RBI double from Bryce Harper. They tied it in the fifth on Sosa's solo homer, and took the lead for good with Weston Wilson's RBI single two batters later. Brandon Marsh added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly that scored Harrison Bader in the ninth inning, and a strong Phillies bullpen performance was capped off by Jhoan Duran's 20th save of the season to secure the win. Duran, acquired from Minnesota on July 30, has allowed just one baserunner in four appearances for Philadelphia. Joc Pederson hit a first-inning two-run homer to give the Rangers the lead. Patrick Corbin (6-8) threw 4 1/3 innings and allowed four hits and three runs. Key moment After the Phillies went ahead 3-2 in top of the fifth, center fielder Harrison Bader protected that lead in the bottom of the inning with a leaping catch to take a home run away from Corey Seager. Bader was reaching above the 6-foot wall in front of the Texas bullpen in right-center when he made the play. Key stat The Phillies are now 49-2 when leading after six innings, and 57-2 when leading after seven, both MLB-best marks. Up next The Phillies continue their 10-game road trip in Cincinnati on Monday, where RHP Taijuan Walker (4-5, 3.53 ERA) starts opposite Reds LHP Andrew Abbott (8-2, 2.34). The Rangers have one more series against the Diamondbacks in their homestand, with Texas RHP Nathan Eovaldi (10-3, 1.38) facing Arizona RHP Ryne Nelson (6-3, 3.20) on Monday. ___ AP MLB: The Associated Press

Christian Leroy Duncan planned for spinning elbow in KO win over Eryk Anders

Christian Leroy Duncan had it all calculated entering UFC on ESPN 72 LAS VEGAS – Spinning attacks are often a thing of the moment in MMA fights. However, that wasn't the case for Christian Leroy Duncan at Saturday's UFC on ESPN 72. Duncan (12-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) viciously knocked out veteran Eryk Anders (17-9 MMA, 9-9 UFC) in the first round of their middleweight contest at the UFC Apex. It was a collection of multiple shots that got Duncan the finish, but it was all initiated by a wild, spinning elbow that badly rocked Anders. "We've been working on a lot of crazy techniques, but this one specifically from the southpaw, the way that he drops his hands, there's a big opening on the inside, so we were working on that elbow off that kick," Duncan told reporters at his UFC on ESPN 72 post-fight-news conference. "He was giving us the sign in there, so I took it as it came and it landed." With this result, Duncan is now on a two-fight winning streak and 4-1 in his past five outings. The bout at UFC on ESPN 72 marked the fourth time Duncan competed at the UFC Apex in his seven-fight run with the UFC. He's hoping that for his next fight the promotion places him on a road event where he can fight in front of a crowd. "I'm injury free, and that's the main thing, and I like to stay active. I'd like to get back out here as soon as possible," Duncan said. "I'm going to take a few weeks to this recovery overall, and I'll be back in the gym and ready so that when the UFC calls, and they give me that name, I'm ready to move forward. It would be nice to be in front of a crowd because nothing matches that to the sound of the crowd. The Apex and Las Vegas are amazing places to be and experience, but now I want to be in front of a crowd."

Quinn Ewers debut grades: Dolphins rookie QB flounders with two fumbles in preseason outing vs. Bears

Quinn Ewers debut grades: Dolphins rookie QB flounders with two fumbles in preseason outing vs. Bears originally appeared on The Sporting News Quinn Ewers has been in the limelight since he was a teenager. Such is life when you're one of a handful of players to earn a vaunted 100.0 grade on 247 Sports' recruiting database. His notoriety follows him into the collegiate game, taking shape during a brief spell at Ohio State and, more notably, a trophy-laden tenure with Texas. Now, it has trailed him once more, resurfacing upon his arrival with the Dolphins. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Ewers' Miami debut vs. the Bears took the football world by storm — for all the wrong reasons. Ewers took the reins of the offense from Zach Wilson partway through the third frame. He proceeded to miss five of his first six pass attempts and cough up the ball on the goal line, setting up a Chicago score. It set the stage for a sour showcase for the Texas alum, whose typical brand of efficiency went the way of the Dodo bird in the Windy City — at least for a fleeting moment. Quinn Ewers debut stats Completions/attempts: 5/19 Passing yards: 91 Sacks: 2 Fumbles lost: 2 Ewers' final line tells much of the story of his maiden preseason appearance. He struggled to find his markers against Chicago's second- and third-stringers, seeing effort after effort carom off the earth. The Dolphins afforded their rookie gunslinger plenty of opportunities to let go of the rock; he tallied 18 pass attempts in just a quarter and a half of work. Nevertheless, Ewers' throws were largely unruly, evading his pass-catchers' grasp. Then, there were the fumbles. One Ewers miscue on the goal line set up a Chicago score. Another on the final drive nearly facilitated a Bears' game-winner. Ewers has plenty of time to overcome his dour showing atop Soldier Field's glint pasture. But he'll need to show far more accuracy on his throws to do so.
