Man dead, Baltimore Police officer scheduled for surgery after shooting
A man is dead after a shooting involving Baltimore Police that left an officer injured on Tuesday, according to officials.
The male suspect was shot by police after they attempted to stop him near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and Laurens Street on Tuesday, June 17.
Officers were patrolling the area when they saw the man whom they believed was armed.
He led officers on a chase, and during a struggle, shot an officer in the foot, according to police.
Three officers shot at the man, hitting him. A weapon was recovered nearby, police said.
On Tuesday night, Baltimore Police Chief Richard Worley said a crowd at the scene interfered with officers as they tried to provide immediate aid to the man.
The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition and was pronounced dead late Tuesday night, officials said.
Officer undergoing surgery after Baltimore shooting
Police said the injured officer was taken to Shock Trauma Tuesday night and was listed in fair condition.
On Wednesday, officials said the eight-year veteran remained in fair condition and is scheduled for surgery.
Attorney General's Office investigates
The Maryland Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division (IID) is investigating the shooting, as is state law for non-fatal and fatal incidents involving police.
Since the division was created in 2021, they have investigated more than 70 cases, including nearly 13 involving Baltimore Police.
The division has the ability to determine if an officer should be held criminally responsible for an incident.
The IID is expected to release body-camera footage from Tuesday's shooting as the investigation continues.

Man arrested for indecent exposure ID'd as Miami firefighter-paramedic, sources say
A man arrested for allegedly following a woman during her morning walk and exposing himself is a firefighter-paramedic with Miami Fire-Rescue, according to two law enforcement sources who spoke with CBS News Miami. CBS News Miami first reported Tuesday that 34-year-old Demetrious Reshad Sams was arrested for indecent exposure after an incident that occurred around 8:45 a.m. on Saturday, June 7, near S.W. 86th Street and 58th Avenue in South Miami. Police say Sams followed the woman in his black 2021 Dodge Charger, exposed himself and touched himself in her presence. A witness provided police with the car's license plate number and the woman later identified Sams in a photo lineup. He was arrested early Tuesday morning at his apartment in Homestead, roughly 20 miles from where the incident occurred. Victim speaks out CBS News Miami spoke again Wednesday with the victim, who expressed disappointment and concern over the suspect's role as a first responder. "It's disappointing. He should be a trusted respected member of our community like all other firefighters are," she said. "It is just completely out of line. I would like other women to come forward just so no one else will have that type of experience." She added, "I have not gone walking since. I just want for everyone to be careful. Try to walk with a buddy and try to have someone you can call in case of an emergency." The woman said she enjoyed her walks and now feels robbed of a sense of safety. "I feel awful. I very much enjoyed walking through my neighborhood. It is a nice and safe community and I feel that has been taken away. It is very scary for many women who walk and bike ride and it's just not good," she said. She encouraged others to report any similar experiences. "If they can contact the police station and let them know if they experienced similar situations," she urged. Multiple cases investigated South Miami Police Sgt. Fernando Bosch told CBS News Miami that Coral Gables police, who assisted in the investigation, are looking into four to five similar cases in their city. Both departments are urging victims and anyone with information to come forward. "Not only do we have concerns but we know, we believe that he has done this in other municipalities close by," Bosch said. "Those municipalities are working cases and there are probably 4 to 5 cases with the same MO." "We believe this has been going on for a while, for a pretty long while and again we believe he has done it to other victims not known to police and we would like to hear from those victims," Bosch added. "These things tend to escalate." The woman also recalled her fear during the encounter. "I was terrified that he might put me in the car. I was very, very scared," she said. Fire-rescue responds Miami Fire-Rescue spokesperson Pete Sanchez confirmed the department is aware that a four-year veteran had been arrested and said contact would be made to begin an internal investigation. "Once contact is established, the department will initiate a thorough internal investigation in accordance with our policies and procedures," Sanchez said. Although Sams was not named in the statement, the department emphasized accountability. "The Department holds all personnel to the highest standards and does not tolerate conduct, on or off duty, that is inconsistent with the values of a City of Miami firefighter," Sanchez added. Sams remains in custody. An attorney CBS News Miami spoke with on Wednesday said a family member of Sams' had inquired about legal representation, but no formal engagement had been made. Henry Ruggs Apologizes For His Deadly Actions At NonProfit Event
During a public speaking event for former and current prisoners held by a Las Vegas nonprofit called Hope for Prisoners, former NFL receiver Henry Ruggs issued a public apology to the family of Tina Tintor for his drunken driving accident four years ago that took the life of the 23-year-old Timor and her dog Max. 'I wish I could turn back the hands of time,' Ruggs said in a video shared by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. 'I would love for them to meet the real Henry Ruggs and not the one that was escaping from something. I sincerely apologize not only for being a part of that situation, but the fact that my face was always in the news so they have to constantly be reminded of the situation.' Due to receiving a special release, Ruggs was given the chance to speak to the public for the first time since his 2023 court sentencing. In November of 2021, authorities reported that Ruggs was driving his Corvette at the top speed of 156 miles per hour around 3:40 a.m. before crashing into the victim's SUV. The incident left Tintor and her dog trapped inside the burning vehicle which led to their eventual deaths. While testing his blood-alcohol level at the scene, it was revealed that Ruggs' level was at a 0.16 which was more than twice the Nevada legal limit. Ruggs pleaded guilty to one count of DUI resulting in death and one misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter in May 2023 following the accident. He was sentenced three to 10 years by the Clark County District Court with the possibility of parole on August 7, 2026. Ruggs admitted to the public that time locked away has been a 'humbling' experience and expressed an added motivation to resume life 'outside these walls'. As of last year, the former NFL receiver has been residing in a transitional housing unit less than a mile away from the Raiders' home stadium Allegiant Stadium. While the parents of Tintor didn't directly respond to Ruggs' recent apology, Tintor's uncle Pedja Komazec spoke on their behalf through a text message between he and the Las Vegas Review-Journal. 'I have a lot of things to say, but just to say a couple words is not enough,' Komazec said in a text Tuesday night,' Komazec said to the Review-Journal. Prior to his crime, Ruggs was a first-round selection in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Las Vegas Raiders after a successful three-year stint with the Alabama Crimson Tide. Former first-round draft pick Henry Ruggs was on a special release from prison on Tuesday to attend at Hope for Prisoners event in Las Vegas, just a few miles away from where he killed a woman while driving drunk at 156 mph. Ruggs was the 12th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft, but just days after his 20th NFL game, he killed Tina Tintor and her dog in the fiery crash. Ruggs was sentenced to 3-10 years in prison in August 2023, with the possibility of parole in August 2026. Nearly four years after the fateful night, though, Ruggs offered an apology to Tintor's family at the event. "One, I wish I could turn back the hands of time," he said at the event, recorded in a video taken by the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "I would love for them to meet the real Henry Ruggs and not the one that was escaping from something. I sincerely apologize for not only being a part of that situation, but the fact my face is always in the news, it's always in the newspaper. So they have to constantly be reminded of the situation, be reminded of me." Ruggs apologized at his sentencing hearing, adding that his behavior was "not a true reflection" of who he is. He pleaded guilty to felony DUI causing death and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. One of his former Raiders teammates, Josh Jacobs, said he's been training for a potential NFL return — he will be 27 when he has the opportunity to be up for parole. Ruggs, who was the Raiders' first-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, was driving 156 mph in his Corvette, police say, when he crashed into Tintor's Toyota RAV4. Her gas tank ruptured due to the crash, and it resulted in her death as well as the death of her golden retriever, Max. When taken to the hospital for his own injuries, Ruggs' blood-alcohol content measured at 0.161, which is twice the legal limit in Nevada. Kiara Je'nai Kilgo-Washington, who was also in Ruggs' Corvette at the time of the crash, suffered injuries as well.
