France urges Israel to grant journalists ‘safe' access to Gaza
On Sunday, five Al Jazeera journalists were killed in an Israeli strike on their tent in Gaza City. Among the victims was Anas al-Sharif, a prominent Al Jazeera correspondent aged 28.
A freelance reporter was also killed in the strike that targeted the Al Jazeera team.
Condemning the strike, the French foreign ministry said that the journalists were targeted while 'carrying out their reporting duties.'
Israel confirmed it had targeted Sharif, whom it labelled a 'terrorist' affiliated with Hamas, saying he 'posed as a journalist.'
'Journalists must never be targeted,' Pascal Confavreux, a spokesman for the French foreign ministry, said in a statement, adding that they were protected by international humanitarian law.
International journalists 'must be able to operate freely and independently to document the reality of the conflict,' Confavreux added.
Since the start of the war in Gaza, members of the international press have not been allowed to work freely in the Palestinian territory.
Only a few hand-picked media outlets have been allowed to enter, embedded with the Israeli army, and their reports are subject to military censorship.
Almost 200 journalists have been killed in the war Israel launched in response to Hamas's October 7, 2023 assault, according to media watchdog Reporters Without Borders (RSF).
International news agencies Agence France-Presse (AFP), Associated Press (AP) and Reuters as well as the BBC in July called on Israel to allow journalists in and out of Gaza.

New scholarship program aims to put media students on fast track to the top
RIYADH: Officials on Wednesday announced the launch of a new scholarship program designed to prepare Saudi students for a first class-career in the media industry. Speaking at a press conference, Minister of Media Salman Al-Dossary said the Media Scholarship Project, developed in partnership with the Ministry of Education, would combine 'knowledge with empowerment.' The initiative, he said, was 'aimed at preparing male and female students for the job market by training them and sending them to the world's best universities and companies specializing in the media field.' Minister of Education Yousef Al-Benyan said the growth in the number of Saudi students at top universities was evidence of the Kingdom's drive to develop its human capital and expand international education opportunities. The ministers also discussed the country's decision to return to a two-semester academic year and the introduction of an artificial intelligence curriculum. Starting in the 2025-26 academic year, AI studies will be introduced at all stages of education alongside a cybersecurity course for high school students. Responding to a question from Arab News, Al-Benyan said the 180-day semester 'meets the needs of the educational process' in Saudi Arabia. The decision was made following a 'comprehensive study that included input from all parties, starting with the students themselves, parents and teachers, as well as experts from within the ministry and other parties,' he said. The change comes four years after the introduction of a three-term system that aimed to extend study days, expand the curricula and make fuller use of educational resources. Al-Benyan said the National Center for Curriculum Development had produced 27 digital courses, reformulated 19 as interactive books and reviewed 50 others to support an advanced digital learning environment. He also highlighted the center's role in aligning curricula with national values and identity, and praised the National Institute for Professional Development for its work with teachers. 'There is a program that will detail the number of values, as well as their quality, and link them to the curriculum and classroom activities. And there will be, God willing, a clear plan from the National Center for Curriculum Development,' he said. Al-Benyan also announced the launch of 75 new construction projects, worth a combined SR920 million ($245.2 million), designed to enhance the nation's education infrastructure and outlined a number of other economic achievements 'Saudi Arabia's program to attract regional headquarters for global companies attracted more than 616 global companies in the first quarter of 2021, up from 120 in the previous quarter, exceeding the 2030 target of 500 companies,' he said. In the industrial sector, he said the number of factories had risen from 'about 7,200 to about 250,500,' while investment had increased from SR955 billion to SR1 trillion and non-oil exports had grown from SR150 billion to SR677 billion. The ministers were speaking at the latest in a series of quarterly ministerial press conferences designed to shed light on important issues and encourage transparency between officials and journalists, values that align with Vision 2030.

S.Sudan hosts Israeli deputy FM but denies Gaza relocation reports
JUBA: South Sudan on Wednesday said that Israel's deputy foreign minister had visited for talks, after reports of plans to relocate Palestinians from the war-torn Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that he would permit Palestinians from Gaza to emigrate voluntarily and that his government was talking to a number of potential host countries. South Sudan, which is said to be one of the host countries, announced that Sharren Haskel had visited, in what it called 'the highest-level engagement from an Israeli official to South Sudan thus far.' According to a statement, Foreign Minister Semaya Kumba held 'a fruitful bilateral dialogue' with Haskel that touched on 'the evolving circumstances within the State of Israel,' without elaborating. 'Both parties expressed a resolute commitment to advancing stronger bilateral and multilateral cooperation moving forward,' it added. A previous statement from the government in Juba refuted media reports that it was in discussion with Israel about relocating Palestinians from Gaza to South Sudan, calling the claims 'baseless.' The potential arrival of Palestinians from Gaza in South Sudan has sparked intense controversy both on social media and on the streets of the capital. 'We don't accept this because these are criminals they are bringing to us. Also we don't have land that can accommodate the Palestinians from Gaza to South Sudan,' Juba resident James Lomederi told AFP. Another local, who asked not to be identified, said: 'We will welcome them with open arms. Our borders need heavy deployment of troops, and they will help us fight anyone who wants to annex our land into their territory.' Impoverished South Sudan has been plagued by insecurity and instability since its independence in 2011. This year, the country saw months of clashes between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and those backing First Vice President Riek Machar.
