Delhi transport dept to appoint jaldoots at 1,500 bus shelters by next week
The transport department will appoint civil defence volunteers as 'jaldoots' at 1,500 bus queue shelters (BQS) in Delhi by next week, Transport Minister Pankaj Singh said on Saturday. These trained personnel will provide clean drinking water.
Officials said that the tenders for fixing water coolers at bus depots were also announced on Saturday. There are 4,575 bus queue shelters, of which more than 1,500 need to be repaired as well, the minister said.
'We have decided on the summer action plan elements that the transport department needs to take care of, and things will be in place starting next week. The jaldoots will be at BQS throughout the day and will help people with water and shade,' said Singh.
The minister added that RO digital water coolers will soon be installed outside all depots and terminals of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), and 10 of these will initially be installed on a pilot basis. This is also in line with the Delhi Heat Action Plan 2025 announced by the Delhi government last month.
'We will ensure that these water coolers are placed outside the depots so that commuters and passersby can also get clean drinking water,' Singh said.
Last year, HT did an audit of BQS across the city that flagged several shortcomings: the structures were broken and damaged at several places. In other areas, a corner or the shade of a tree was being used as a bus stop.
Officials said that the department will also place water ATMs at all three ISBTs in Delhi. Last month, one water ATM was installed at Kashmere Gate ISBT, and 5,000 others are planned across the city.

Grocery store owner shot at by passersby in Sohna, FIR registered
Gurgaon: A man shot at a grocery store owner after an argument while they were crossing paths in Sohna late on Tuesday night. The grocery store owner, Medh Singh, has a bullet injury to his foot, and his condition is stable, police said. Singh told police the incident took place around 11pm, when he had closed his shop for the day and was walking to his house in the area. He came across the two men on the way and an argument ensued. One of them fired at him. SHO of Sohna City police station Parveen Malik said the bullet scraped past Singh's foot. An FIR was registered against the two men on the charge of attempt to murder and under the Arms Act. "We received the complaint on Wednesday evening. We are yet to identify the accused. They will be arrested soon," the inspector said. Truck driver shot at A 32-year-old truck driver was shot at by an unidentified assailant in IMT Manesar around 11.30pm on Tuesday. He is being treated at a city hospital for gunshot wounds. Police said the motive of the attack is not known. The driver said he does not have any enmity or rivalry with anyone else. "We are scanning CCTV footage from the area. The motive behind the attack will be clear once the accused is caught," a senior police officer said on Wednesday. The officer added that investigation was underway and cops will arrest the culprit soon.

Work withdrawn from Punjab judge after HC admin recommends his compulsory retirement
Chandigarh: Just days after the Punjab and Haryana high court administration recommended compulsory retirement of Tejwinder Singh, judicial responsibilities have been withdrawn from him. Singh, one of Punjab's senior-most district and sessions judges, was serving as the presiding officer of the industrial tribunal in Patiala. Sources confirmed that since the HC administration has sent the recommendations regarding his compulsory retirement to the Punjab govt, it was a routine exercise to withdraw judicial work from the concerned judicial officer. As per rules, the decision to compulsorily retire Tejwinder Singh would be notified by the Punjab govt. Singh had first come into limelight in June 2019, when he had convicted six persons in the infamous Kathua rape and murder case. While three were awarded life sentence, other three accused were given five-year jail terms. The trial was conducted in his court after the Supreme Court had shifted the case from Kathua to Pathankot, where he was posted as the district and sessions judge. Known for his sobriety and professional competence, Singh joined the Punjab judicial services in 1991 at the age of 23 and made it to the 1993 edition of the Limca Book of World Records for being India's youngest magistrate. He had also served as magistrate in Chandigarh. Singh had also practiced as an advocate at the Punjab and Haryana high court for around a year before joining the judicial services. In March 2017, he completed his doctorate in law from the Panjab University in Chandigarh on "Legislative Measures To Control Terrorism And Their Enforcement With Special Reference To The State Of Punjab: A Critique." Singh had qualified for Punjab judiciary examination in 1989 and started his career as a magistrate in Ludhiana.
