Páteo do Petisco and Burguês arrive at the renovated Parede Market

Time Out17-06-2025
It was at the traditional Mercado da Parede – which has been getting a long-overdue revamp over the past few years – that two of Cascais' best-loved restaurants opened their doors on June 5th: Páteo do Petisco and Burguês. The launches had been in the pipeline for quite some time, with renovation works taking a couple of years to wrap up completely.
The Páteo group, which first opened Páteo do Petisco in Torre back in 2010 (and later expanded to Mercado da Vila), won a public tender to take over the spaces. 'One of our strengths was having two distinct concepts,' Francisco Vidal, one of the group's partners, told Time Out Cascais. 'That way, the local council only had to deal with one operator.'
Mercado da Parede still runs as a traditional market from Tuesday to Sunday, with a butcher, fruit and veg stalls, a deli and a fishmonger. It was already home to a Padaria Portuguesa – with the local council offices of Carcavelos and Parede located just above – and now the space has welcomed two new foodie neighbours.
'We've got loads of regulars from around here who used to head into Cascais,' says Francisco. 'Now they've got somewhere right on their doorstep – and Parede's a lively area. It's probably one of the most street-active neighbourhoods along the coast. There's been a real boost in local population too, so it made total sense.' 'We only opened a week ago, but it's already been buzzing!' he adds. 'Another big plus is that Uber Eats plays a huge part in our business nowadays. With these two concepts here, we're now able to serve both Cascais and Oeiras – which is something we're really excited about.'
The art of "petiscar"
The menus are exactly the same as in the original spots. At Páteo do Petisco, it's all about classic Portuguese petiscos – just as the name suggests. Think peixinhos da horta (green beans in tempura, €8), garlicky fried cuttlefish with aioli (€10.20), sizzling garlic prawns (€12), pica pau (marinated beef strips) with skinny fries (€13.25), ovos rotos (soft eggs with chips and ham, €9.50), eggs with farinheira sausage (€7.50), slow-cooked moelas (gizzards, €9.30), padrón peppers (€7.80), flame-grilled chouriço (€8), or sautéed mushrooms (€9.50) – just to name a few.
If you're after something a bit heartier, they've got you covered with full-on mains too. There's the teclado (a grilled meat combo) with sliced potatoes (€14), aged beef (€29), the signature Bife à Páteo (€15.50), classic bitoques (€13.50), or secretos (juicy pork cuts, €14), plus a range of other steaks, fish and seafood dishes. And for the sandwich lovers, there are prego rolls to suit all tastes – whether you're into beef, black pork, chicken or tuna.
Between two slices of bread
Right next door, in a similarly laid-out space, Burguês is all about burgers. And we're not talking about your average cheeseburger. On the menu, the Alto Gabarito (€15) stands tall with 150g of beef, lettuce, tomato, queijo da ilha (Azores cheese), mushrooms, onions, bacon and a fried egg on top. Then there's the Guincho (€13.60), with the same 150g of beef, plus lettuce, tomato, brie, mushrooms and cured ham. Or you can keep it classic with the Burguês (€10.90), stacked with beef, lettuce, tomato, cheddar, bacon and onion.
Burguês
To kick things off, there are some all-American-inspired starters: chicken wings (€5.50 for 5), onion rings (€4.20 for 6), or breaded jalapeños stuffed with cheddar (€4.90 for 5). And if you're keeping it light(ish), there are salads on offer too (€12.80). The new Páteo do Petisco seats around 80 people, with a counter, an outdoor terrace and even a TV to catch the footie. Over at Burguês, there's space for about 40 diners. Francisco Vidal says it's a long-term move: 'We're here to stay.'
As for what's next, the group – which also runs Páteo do Guincho at Cascais Marina – might have more in the pipeline. 'Right now we're in a solid place and the goal is to keep growing,' says Francisco. 'We're always open to exploring new opportunities – whether that's here, there or somewhere in between.'

Alan Shearer names two key Liverpool transfers that can fuel title defence

The Premier League's record goalscorer hailed the defending champions as being particularly savvy - and they are still linked with his former club Newcastle United's star striker, Alexander Isak Alan Shearer has been impressed by Liverpool's transfer business this summer and highlighted two key signings he will be keeping an eye on. ‌ The Premier League's record goalscorer hailed the defending champions as being particularly savvy - and they are still linked with his former club Newcastle United's star striker, Alexander Isak. ‌ Liverpool have already made a number of additions having seen Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez depart the club - splashing the cash on the likes of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen and Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt. ‌ Right-back Jeremie Frimpong also arrived from the German club while left-back Milos Kerkez was signed from Bournemouth. And Shearer, 54, was quick to point out their strong business amid an exciting summer. 'The signings at Liverpool have been really interesting,' Shearer, speaking at the launch of the Topps Premier League 2025-26 collection, said. 'A right-back, left-back. [Florian] Wirtz is another one, [Hugo] Ekitike is another one. 'There are so many intriguing bits to look forward to. And [Viktor] Gyokeres at Arsenal, it will be interesting to see how he goes after blowing the Portuguese league wide. ‌ 'The [number of] goals that he scores is phenomenal, whether we can do that [in the Premier League ] remains to be seen.' The former No.9-turned pundit believes the expenditure of the top four is shaping up a thrilling season in the Premier League. He pointed out the battle to penetrate that dominant quad of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City could provide some enthralling encounters. 'I'm really looking forward to it. It's going to be such an intriguing season,' he said. 'The chasing pack - Newcastle, Villa, Brighton, Spurs, maybe Man United, maybe a few others - are trying to somehow get into the top four with what the top four have spent in Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Liverpool, so it's going to be a fascinating season. ‌ 'Some of the signings [have been great], and obviously it's not finished yet, so I'm really excited.' Shearer himself scored 260 goals while in the Premier League with Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers. And while he anticipates excitement, he cannot foresee any major upsets coming from further down the table. 'I don't think there'll be any massive surprises. It wouldn't be a surprise if Brighton were there because of what they've done,' he said. ‌ 'Villa are chasing but haven't made as many signings as they maybe want, Bournemouth have had to sell and [Illya] Zabarnyi may be going to PSG as well. 'At the bottom, the teams that have come up, history tells us it's going to be very, very difficult for those three to stay up.' The all-time Premier League record goalscorer was speaking at the launch of the new Topps Premier League 2026 which features players from all 20 clubs in the league in their 2025/26 kits at the Fanatics flagship store on Thursday . ‌ He was joined by other legends such as Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand to celebrate the new stand-alone range that features legends and current stars, with an extensive parallel programme and more autographs than ever before. And it brought a moment of nostalgia for the star who remembered the excitement of collecting the cards as a youngster. 'Obviously [collecting for] all the World Cups and Euros comes to mind,' recalled Shearer. 'It's pretty addictive, isn't it? Once you get one, you want to open another and another and another and it's nonstop. So yeah, I loved it. ‌ 'I just remember thinking, I've opened one packet and you've got to open another one straight away. That was my memory of doing it.' Marking the launch of the Topps Premier League 2025-26 collection were football icons Alan Shearer, Steven Gerrard, and Rio Ferdinand, joined by Jermaine Defoe, Joleon Lescott, Theo Walcott and Tosin Adarabioyo, alongside Fanatics CEO Michael Rubin in a star-studded celebration.

‘Europe's Hawaii' is having a record-breaking year

With over 1,660 flights scheduled to land in Madeira in August alone, it's clear that this magical island is having a moment. Adrift in the Atlantic 400km north of the Canary Islands, the autonomous Portuguese archipelago offers a captivating mix of rich cultural heritage and breathtaking natural beauty. From the ancient Laurissilva Forest and Madeira Peaks mountain ranges to the sun-soaked shores of the south coast, there are dozens of drawcards. Direct flights from the UK are as little as £70 one-way, and after years in the tourism wilderness, travellers are finally starting to take note. Madeira Airport – officially Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport – is expecting record-breaking air traffic this month, with 633 more scheduled flights than in 2019 — a whopping 61.58% increase. The top airlines contributing to this growth are easyJet (25.81%), TAP (18.57%), and Ryanair (12.39%). Fuel your wanderlust with our curated newsletter of travel deals, guides and inspiration. Sign up here. Airport capacity is also peaking, with nearly a 21% increase compared to August 2024. According to a report on the Regional Government's website, the airport is set to offer an additional 51,757 seats this summer. Funchal, Madeira's capital, is known for its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage, and remains the most popular destination served by these airlines. Ryanair is driving this growth by building on already popular flights from London Stansted, Porto, and Lisbon, with new routes from Milan Malpensa, Shannon and Edinburgh. These changes and additions are adding an extra 16,026 seats to Ryanair's Madeira schedule this season. Following behind them, easyJet is adding an extra 14,150 seats to its Madeira schedule this year. The increase comes from additional flights on existing routes from Porto, Lisbon, and Paris-CDG, as well as new connections to Nantes and Amsterdam. TAP has introduced a new route between Faro and Funchal, along with increased flights from Porto and Lisbon. Together, these changes add an extra 4,406 seats. Among these operational increases, TAP's seasonal connection between Funchal and the Venezuelan capital of Caracas is making a return with weekly flights running from August 14 to October 16. Norwegian Airlines will also resume its service between Oslo and Funchal on August 19. More Trending However, not all routes are expanding. Madeira's Air Transport Observatory has noted that Azores Airlines has discontinued international connections from JFK, Boston and Toronto. Lufthansa has stopped direct flights from Munich to Funchal, and Iberia has axed routes from Seville and Santiago de Compostela. It's not just air travel that's experiencing sweeping change. Madeira's cruise tourism is also seeing a significant uptick. The Port of Funchal is having a record-breaking quarter with a 19.64% increase in passenger traffic. The growth is estimated to have generated more than €22 million for the regional economy, according to Associação Comercial e Industrial do Funchal. Bruno Fernandes transfer bombshell dropped as manager confirms Man Utd offer

Al Nassr manager Jorge Jesus has confirmed that the Saudi club made an approach to sign Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes during this summer's window Jorge Jesus has admitted he failed in an attempt to sign Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese midfielder was at the centre of an approach from Saudi champions Al-Hilal after suggesting he could leave Old Trafford at the end of last season. ‌ Fernandes was given a ludicrous offer that would have seen him bank more than £60million-per-year, with the Red Devils offered £105m for his services. ‌ However, despite revealing he had considered making the same move compatriot and former team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo made, he opted to remain with United. And now it has emerged that Ronaldo's current employers, Al Nassr, also made a tentative approach to try and sign the 30-year-old. ‌ Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus has confessed that he did hold talks with Fernandes, but was told that he wished to stay with Ruben Amorim. "I wanted to [sign him], but Bruno is determined to stay,' Jesus told Sport Informa. 'We already talked last year. This year I knew he had made the decision to continue with Amorim. 'He's in a league that they say is the best in the world, but I don't agree. For me, it's the Spanish league." Fernandes will instead be the centrepoint of a United attacking spending spree that is set to eclipse £200m. Benjamin Sesko is set to be Amorim's third recruit of the summer, joining from RB Leipzig in a deal worth £74m. The Slovenian will join Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo who signed after big money deals from Wolves and Brentford respectively. And it's business United needed to complete after scoring just 44 league goals in last season's miserable domestic campaign. The arrival of Sesko came after Fernandes made it clear that further improvements were needed. Speaking on their US tour, he said: 'I don't want to have a dig at anyone, but I think the club is doing the best they can in terms of all the financial situations they talk about. ‌ 'I don't know about it, I'm not involved in that. But obviously it was crystal clear we needed more competition for the players that were here. 'We needed more quality to get everyone to step up a bit more and to have more to do to get into the starting line-up. I think that's what the club and the manager are trying to do and hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that.' ‌ On his own transfer saga, Fernandes hinted that United's defiant stance ultimately made his mind up. He said: . "There was that possibility, the president of Al Hilal called me a month ago to ask me about it. There was a waiting period for me to think about the future. "As I have always said, I would be willing to do it if Manchester United thought so. I spoke to coach Ruben Amorim who, throughout that period, was very annoying to me not to go. The club said they would not be willing to sell me, only if I wanted to leave." United face Fiorentina at Old Trafford in their final pre-season game on Saturday, before their Premier League season kicks off when they face Arsenal on August 17.
