Electors to get EPICS within 15 days of update in electoral rolls: ECI
18 Jun 2025, 23:55 GMT+10
New Delhi [India], June 18 (ANI): To ensure faster delivery of Electors Photo Identity Cards (EPICS) to the electors, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has introduced a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) enabling the delivery of EPICs within 15 days of an update in the electoral rolls, including new enrolment of an elector or change in any particulars of an existing elector.
The initiative is in line with the various measures being undertaken by the ECI for the convenience of electors as envisaged by the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, according to a release.
The new system will ensure real-time tracking of each stage right from the EPIC generation by the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) till the delivery of EPIC to the elector through the Department of Posts (DOP). Electors will also receive notifications via SMS at each stage, keeping them informed about the status of their EPICS, the release stated.
For this purpose, ECI has introduced a dedicated IT module on its recently launched ECINet platform. The new IT platform will replace the existing process by re-engineering the current system and streamlining the workflow. DoP's Application Programme Interface (API) will be integrated with the ECINet for seamless delivery. This initiative aims to enhance service delivery while maintaining data security.
Providing prompt and efficient electoral services to all its electors is a major focus area for the ECI. It may be recalled that in the past four months, the Commission has taken a slew of initiatives for the benefit of electors and other stakeholders, the release added. (ANI)

Bihar draft rolls: ‘Husband Husband', ‘father voter ID card' instead of names, EC takes action after errors flagged
After social media users pointed out some errors in the draft electoral roll of Bihar published on August 1, a month after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Election Commission officials said Sunday that they would rectify those and action would be taken against Booth Level Officers (BLOs) responsible. Among the errors flagged were 'husband husband', 'father father', 'father voter ID card' and 'Election Commission of India' written instead of the names of the husband or parent of some electors. The mistakes, according to EC sources, pertained to Chapra Assembly constituency of Saran district. The names had been included with the same errors in the second supplementary electoral roll issued in March, they said. For example, in one booth in Chapra, a 22-year-old woman elector's father's name was mentioned as 'father father'; husbands of two women were mentioned as 'husband husband'; a 21-year-old woman's father's name was shown as 'father's voter ID card', and a 19-year-old woman's mother's name was listed as 'Election Commission of India'. Saran District Magistrate Aman Samir, who is also the District Election Officer, said in a statement on Sunday that an inquiry has been initiated and action would be taken against the BLO in-charge at the time and the new BLO as well. Samir said that four names, with the errors, had been in the rolls before the SIR and that Form-8 — for making corrections to entries on rolls — were also processed. The names were added using the BLO app sometime between January 2025 and March 2025, the DM said. Electors and political parties can file claims and objections from August 1 to September 1, either to include or remove a name from draft rolls. As of 3 pm Sunday, the EC statement said that 941 claims and objections have been filed by electors, while nothing has been filed by the Booth Level Agents (BLAs) of national or state parties. As per the EC's order on June 24, all 7.89 crore Bihar electors were required to fill the enumeration forms by July 25, to be included in the draft rolls. After the month-long exercise, a total of 7.24 crore electors were included, while 65 lakh removed since the EC found that some were dead, others had permanently shifted, enrolled in multiple places or untraceable. The final roll will be published on September 30. Those who registered after January 1, 2003, when the last intensive revision was conducted, are required to submit documents establishing their eligibility, which includes citizenship, by September 1. India's semiconductor mission paves way for digital sovereignty: Experts
Academy Empower your mind, elevate your skills India's semiconductor mission paves way for digital sovereignty and will take the country towards self-sufficiency in chips that have use in a wide array of applications, including CCTV cameras, mobile networks, satellites, cars, and smart devices, experts have said that the central government's initiative lays the groundwork for India to become self-reliant across the entire digital technology stack -- from chip manufacturing to artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud applications. All mission-critical digital infrastructure, whether related to artificial intelligence or cloud computing -- fundamentally depends on semiconductor chips."When you are talking about a completely digital sovereignty, it starts at the chip level. Whether it is a complete AI stack or a complete cloud stack on which any mission-critical applications of government or enterprises run, it always starts from the ground level, which is the chip. From chip level, we end up making equipment," Sunil Gupta, Chair, ASSOCHAM National Council on Datacenter, told ANI on the sidelines of an event 'Sovereign Tech for India's Digital Transformation'. The event was organised by ASSOCHAM."Chips form the base, leading to the development of equipment, operating systems, datasets, models, and ultimately, applications. You start making operating systems, then you run in case of AI examples. You have data sets and then you have models and then you have applications. The government understands this whole stack, which needs to be completely owned by India. At the chip level, India has created a semiconductor mission so that India can design, fabricate, assemble and package its own chips in India itself," Gupta told India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) is aimed at ensuring full ownership of this stack. The mission aims to enable domestic capabilities in chip design, fabrication, assembly, and packaging."The semiconductor mission and the government's emphasis on it is a step in the very right direction. It is at the route of becoming a sovereign nation in terms of digital infrastructure," Gupta said."Starting has been done maybe with chips of 28 nanometers, but I am very sure once this mission starts, we will start manufacturing the most high-end two and three-nanometre chips also. As the Minister of IT also announced that within five years India can also expect its indigenous GPU, which is real sovereignty at the grassroots you are not dependent on a chip which is designed in the US and manufactured in Taiwan. India will be able to design and manufacture chips in India itself," he also spoke about India's efforts to widen its sources of rare earth metals amid export curbs by China."Prime Minister visited countries in Latin America and Africa recently.... India will have to be self-dependent on rare earth metals as these are used in manufacturing electronics products. This is another aspect on which the government is very serious about," he Pillai, founding member of Bharath Cloud, emphasised the significance of Digital India."It is an economic and security story and having everything in house is very important. Having everything on our own soil and working on our own terms is extremely important for us to grow and innovate. India is focused in the area," she Programme for Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem in India was notified in December 2021 with a total outlay of Rs. 76,000 Union Cabinet had in May this year approved establishment of one more semiconductor unit under India Semiconductor semiconductor units are in advanced stages of construction. The unit approved in Uttar Pradesh is a joint venture of HCL and Foxconn. This plant will manufacture display driver chips for mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, PCs, and myriad of other devices that have plant is designed for 20,000 wafers per month. The design output capacity is 36 million units per and entrepreneurs in 270 academic institutions and 70 startups are working on world class latest design technologies for developing new products. Twenty products developed by the students of these academic students have been taped out by SCL Mohali.

Exuding confidence over the outcome of the upcoming Assembly elections in Bihar, Union Minister Giriraj Singh on Sunday said that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will form the government here under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. "Today, I can say with confidence that the next government in Bihar will be formed by the NDA under the leadership of Nitish Kumar and PM Modi," Giriraj Singh told reporters. Union Minister applauded the work done under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and mentioned that 17 bridges have been constructed over Bihar's Ganga river since 2014. Ever since Narendra Modi became the Prime Minister, 17 bridges have been built over the Ganga river in Bihar. Not only that, today there is no part in Bihar where there are no proper roads. The Modi government is the one which gave development to Bihar. It is only under the NDA government that people in Bihar have been employed, he said. The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Saturday said that it will double the remuneration for Booth Level Officers (BLOs), enhance remuneration for BLO Supervisors and give honorarium to Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs). "Pure electoral rolls are the bedrock of democracy. The electoral roll machinery, consisting of Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), BLO Supervisors and Booth Level Officers (BLOs), do a lot of hard work and play a pivotal role in preparation of impartial and transparent electoral rolls. The Commission has therefore, decided to double the annual remuneration for BLOs & also enhanced the remuneration of BLO Supervisors involved in the preparation and revision of electoral rolls" it said in a press release. The apex poll body's press statement also mentioned that the last such revision was done in 2015 and the honorarium has been provided for EROs and AEROs for the first time.
