Meet contemporary Christian singer Lauren Daigle: the Louisiana native was rejected by American Idol but performed at this year's Super Bowl, and courted controversy for going on Ellen DeGeneres' show

This February, the Super Bowl saw the Philadelphia Eagles crush the Kansas City Chiefs at the New Orleans Caesars Superdome. No doubt Taylor Swift, who's dating Chiefs' tight end Travis Kelce, was disappointed. But alongside the game, fans were treated to exciting performances by Kendrick Lamar – who headlined the halftime show – and

Also taking the stage was Lauren Daigle. The 33-year-old contemporary Christian singer was joined by Trombone Shorty and two other instrumentalists for a Louisiana-inspired big band performance of 'America the Beautiful'.

Daigle has been making waves in recent years for her Christian discography, which has now earned her two Grammys (from six nominations). In 2020, she performed at the College Football Playoff National Championship and earlier this year, sang on America's Got Talent. So, what else do we know about her?

Raised in Lafayette, Louisiana, Lauren Daigle grew up surrounded by music. 'My mum called our house 'The Music Box,' because any time I was awake I would be singing,' she revealed in an interview with MTV. The cultural landscape of New Orleans, with its zydeco and Cajun music, also influenced her, as did the rock music her father listened to and the jazz and pop her mum loved, she shared in a piece she wrote for Guideposts.
She struggled with illness as a teenager

Daigle spent the last stretch of high school studying from home after she contracted cytomegalovirus at the age of 15, according to The Guardian. Homebound for around two years, she found respite in music after her mum signed her up for singing lessons. On an episode of Fox & Friends, she recalled having visions of 'stages' and 'people in the crowd' at the time, which, to her, signalled her future.

Why so few Asian-Americans in the Karate Kid series? How new movie Legends addresses this

It did not occur to Ben Wang right away that in taking on Karate Kid: Legends, he would be the franchise's first Asian-American 'Kid'. And that gives him a lot of optimism. Advertisement 'At first I didn't even think about that,' Wang says. 'That feels like a very cool and actually privileged position that I get to be in.' His casting happened, he says, in 'a world where that's normal enough'. (From left) Jackie Chan, Ben Wang and Ralph Macchio in a still from Karate Kid: Legends. Why Gen Z are suddenly flocking to Broadway productions like Sam Gold's Romeo + Juliet

Kimberly Belflower knew John Proctor is the Villain needed its final cathartic scene to work – and for that it needed Lorde's 2017 song 'Green Light'. Advertisement 'I literally told my agent, 'I would rather the play just not get done if it can't use that song,'' the playwright laughed. She wrote Lorde a letter, explaining what the song meant, and got her 'Green Light'. Starring Sadie Sink, the staggering play about high schoolers studying Arthur Miller's 1953 play The Crucible as the #MeToo movement arrives in their small town in the US state of Georgia earned seven Tony nominations. It is among a group of Broadway shows that have centred on the stories of young people and attracted audiences to match. Advertisement
