Shoppers flock to sweet treats inspired by US trends, Mr Kipling owner says
Branded sales across the group grew by 1.2% to £216 million over the 13 weeks to June 28, compared with the same period a year ago.
This was driven by an 11.34% jump in sales of its sweet treat branded products including Mr Kipling and Cadbury cakes.
Mr Kipling birthday cake tarts, inspired by snack trends in the US, and newly launched 'lunchbox' cake slices helped draw in new shoppers, the company said.
Chief executive Alex Whitehouse said the uptick in branded sales was 'driven by the strength of our innovation programme with new product ranges such as Mr Kipling birthday cake tarts performing very strongly, as we brought to Britain a trend that is particularly popular in the US'.
'We expect branded revenue growth to build through the year, as we launch further new products, such as Fuel10K yoghurt and granola pots,' he added.
However, revenues from its grocery products declined by 2.7% over the latest period.
Demand for items such as gravy, stock and soup were impacted by warmer-than-usual temperatures, Premier Foods said.
Premier Foods said it was attracting new customers to its Mr Kipling birthday cake tarts (Premier Foods/PA)
It pointed to new product launches such as The Spice Tailor rolling out Mexican kits and Bisto bringing out peri-peri gravy to attract more younger consumers.
Meanwhile, non-branded grocery revenues declined by 8.8% year-on-year, which Premier Foods said partly reflected consumers switching to brands.
Premier Foods said it was expecting sales growth from its portfolio of brands to build throughout the financial year.
It is also continuing to target cost-cutting across the business in a bid to bolster profits.
Shares in the company were down by nearly 4% on Thursday following the update.

Peru seizes 4 tons of black market mercury bound for illegal gold mines
LIMA, July 24 (Reuters) - Peruvian authorities have halted a shipment of about four metric tons of mercury headed to Bolivia for presumed use in illegal gold mining, they said on Thursday, the latest sign of rising black market activity to fulfill soaring demand for the precious metal. The mercury had been passed off as a container of crushed rock, but Peru's customs agency SUNAT said an analysis revealed that the material had been laced with mercury, a toxic metal that is subject to strict environmental controls. "We could determine that mercury was being transported in its natural state, camouflaged in shipments of gravel," SUNAT said in a statement. The cargo was detected at the Callao port and came from Mexico, it added. The seizure appears to be the largest on record in the Amazon region of South America where illegal gold mining is widespread, according to a review of past seizures by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), a Washington-based advocacy nonprofit. Until now, the biggest known shipment in the region, about a decade ago, was only half the size, according to the EIA. The latest discovery comes as gold prices have soared in recent months, as global trade uncertainty has made gold particularly attractive for investors. Gold prices are up 28.5% so far this year and hit a record high of $3,500 per troy ounce in April. The frenzy for gold has led to deadly encounters from West Africa to Peru. The EIA said it alerted Peruvian authorities to the shipment during its research into illicit mercury shipments from Mexico to Bolivia, Colombia and Peru, where miners use mercury to leach gold from sediment of the Amazon riverbanks. It said higher mercury prices were driving illegal mercury production in Mexico, with a particular spike since the start of this year as traffickers paid a record $330 per kilogram. "According to traffickers, gold miners' demand for mercury has driven the sophisticated operation and made it profitable," the EIA said in a report released on Thursday. It said its investigation showed that 200 tons of mercury were smuggled from Mexico to Bolivia, Colombia and Peru between April 2019 and June 2025, accounting for a conservative estimate of $8 billion in illegal gold. Peruvian officials did not address the role of the EIA in the discovery of the mercury-laced gravel from Mexico.

Valero beats estimates as refining margins offset renewable diesel loss
July 24 (Reuters) - Refiner Valero Energy (VLO.N), opens new tab beat Wall Street estimates for second-quarter earnings on Thursday, despite reporting lower profits from the previous year, as a rebound in refining margins helped cushion losses in the renewable diesel segment. Its shares were down around 4% at noon. The first major refiner to post results this earnings season, Valero reported a profit of $2.28 per share for the second quarter, down from $2.71 per share for the same period a year ago but beating analysts' average estimates for $1.74 per share. The renewable diesel segment, consisting of the Diamond Green Diesel joint venture, reported an operating loss of $79 million for the quarter, compared with a profit of $112 million a year ago. Operating losses from the renewable diesel operations remain small relative to the profits generated by the refining segment, said Stewart Glickman, energy equity analyst at CFRA Research. For the second quarter, the refining segment reported quarterly operating income of $1.3 billion, up from last year's $1.2 billion, boosted by higher margins. Refining margin per barrel of throughput was up at $12.35 in the second quarter, compared with $11.14 from a year earlier, the San Antonio, Texas-based refiner said. "We set a record for refining throughput rate in our U.S. Gulf Coast region in the second quarter," said CEO Lane Riggs. Valero said it plans to operate refineries up to 94% of combined total capacity in Q3 2025. The pending closure of its Benicia refinery near San Francisco in April next year will remove around 5% of its refining capacity and 9% of California's crude oil capacity. Reuters reported this week the California government is trying to find a buyer for the Benicia refinery. "There's a genuine desire for [the California government officials] to avoid the refinery closure, but there's no solutions that have materialized, at least not from our perspective," said Rich Walsh, general counsel at Valero. "Nothing has changed in our plans."

River Island on brink of collapsing into administration
The fashion chain, which has stories in Newport city centre, Spytty and Cwmbran, also needs to secure further funding later this year in order to preserve its future, according to documents shared with creditors. The London-based company has laid out a major rescue plan which will see it shut 33 stores and pay reduced rents on a further 71 shops. River Island has asked landlords to cut rents for three years and potentially stop payments completely on some sites in a bid to stem losses. River Island is on the brink of collapsing into administration The plan, which will also see it write off parts of its heavy debt pile, will need court approval next month. River Island will need the backing of 75% of the group's creditors, predominantly landlords, at a hearing on August 7. The company said talks with creditors have been positive and it expects to gain approval for the restructuring plan. However, company documents first reported by the Telegraph warned that the company will be 'unable to pay its debts' by the end of the month if the plan is rejected. It indicated that the company will not be able to keep trading if it fails on these payments and would therefore 'be subject to administration or other insolvency proceedings'. The documents also highlighted that the company faces a £10 million 'funding need' in September, which could balloon to £50 million by next year. A River Island spokeswoman said: 'River Island circulated its proposals for a restructuring plan to creditors on June 20. Recommended reading: 'In combination with the company's ongoing transformation strategy, the plan is a proactive measure to place the company on a firm footing. 'We have been having positive conversations with key stakeholders and are confident that we will achieve approval of the plan in the next few weeks.' River Island employs around 5,500 people and was founded in 1948 under the Lewis and Chelsea Girl brand before being renamed in the 1980s.
