Airtel Digital TV removing Zee channels from base packs over price hike
Mumbai: Bharti Airtel-owned direct-to-home (DTH) company Airtel Digital TV said it is removing
Zee Entertainment
channels from its bouquets due to a recent price hike by the broadcaster, mirroring an ongoing dispute between
Sony Pictures
Networks India and
Tata Play
.
The DTH company will adjust pack prices to account for the removal of
Zee channels
and place the broadcaster's offerings on an a la carte basis, requiring subscribers to opt for Zee channels separately.
'Due to recent changes in broadcaster tariffs, Zee Network channels will no longer be part of the
Airtel DTH
base packs. These pack prices will be adjusted accordingly,' an Airtel spokesperson said. 'All Zee network channels are available on Airtel DTH and can be added individually to the list of subscribed channels at their respective MRPs via channel selection options."

In January, Zee and Sony Pictures Networks India raised the price of their base bouquets by over 10%. Broadcaster JioStar implemented the steepest hike, increasing the price of its base bouquet by 18% to ₹110.
While Zee and Airtel Digital TV have not disclosed the financial terms of their deal, the DTH company is estimated to pay ₹300–400 crore annually in subscription fees to the broadcaster.
Live Events
Sources familiar with the matter said Airtel Digital TV is resisting the price hike by Zee, as the company and other DTH operators aim to control costs and return to profitability.
A Zee Entertainment executive, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the broadcaster has no dispute with the DTH company, as the two had signed a reference interconnect offer (RIO) agreement specifying the terms and conditions for interconnection earlier this year.
'I don't understand what the dispute is, because Airtel Digital TV has signed a RIO agreement with us and also implemented the price hike to its subscribers. We are waiting for them to send us the subscriber reports, providing the number of subscribers who are taking our channels and bouquets, and we will bill them accordingly,' the executive added.
'Distribution platforms have to reallocate content spends to reflect the new market dynamics — particularly in the wake of the creation of broadcasting giant JioStar, which has extracted its pound of flesh from the market,' a veteran TV distribution executive said, adding that with overall average revenue per user (ARPU) stagnating, distributors are now compelled to reallocate budgets based on each network's strength.
JioStar currently has 34% of the TV viewership market, while Zee holds 17% and Sony Pictures Networks accounts for less than 10%.
Recently, Sony Pictures Networks, a Sony Group Corp-owned entity operating under the legal name Culver Max Entertainment, approached the Bombay High Court to challenge a Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal order, which had restrained it from proceeding with a disconnection notice issued to Tata Play.
While staying the disconnection notice, TDSAT had also directed Tata Play to pay ₹40 crore to the broadcaster within two weeks, as part-payment against its claimed dues of ₹128 crore. The tribunal stated that this amount would be adjusted against the liability to be determined during the final hearing.
A recent report by EY and the All India Digital Cable Federation said India's pay-TV subscriber base dropped from 151 million in 2018 to 111 million in 2024 — a loss of 40 million subscribers. The report also projected a further decline, with pay-TV households expected to fall to between 71 and 81 million by 2030.
The decline has been attributed to rising channel costs, increased competition from over-the-top platforms and the growing popularity of free, unregulated services such as DD Free Dish.

HC dismisses Leela Group appeals against AAI eviction proceedings in Mumbai
Mumbai: The Bombay high court has dismissed appeals filed by the Leela Group against eviction proceedings initiated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) over its Mumbai plots leased out for building a hotel. The court observed that the lease period expired long ago, and eviction was not an issue amenable to arbitration under the lease agreement between AAI and Leela. Justice Somasekhar Sundaresan dismissed the Leela Group's appeals and imposed costs of Rs 10 lakh to be paid in four weeks to AAI. The judge cited Leela's "prolonged enjoyment" of the expired leasehold land and his "assessment of the lack of reasonableness in some of the contentions raised on behalf of Leela" as reasons to impose the costs. In 1983, AAI leased two plots, together measuring 18,000 square feet, to Hotel Leela Venture Ltd (Leela Group) to construct a hotel and flight kitchen, with the lease expiring in July 2012. Another lease for an AAI-owned plot of 11,000 square metres to construct a hotel wing expired on March 31, 2024. The plots were deemed public premises under the Public Premises Eviction Act. AAI initiated eviction proceedings in 2017 for the two plots. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top 5 Wealth Management Firms in The United States SmartAsset Learn More Undo However, on a request by senior counsel Rafiq Dada for the Leela Group, the high court, which had directed the eviction officer to begin eviction on merits swiftly, day-to-day, stayed the start of the process by four weeks. The Leela Group, represented by Dada with advocate Vivek Menon, argued that the matter must be decided only by an arbitrator as private lands were amalgamated into the 18,000 square feet and could never thus be 'public premises'. The AAI, represented by former AG Ashutosh Kumbhakoni, argued that under the agreement, eviction and rental dues were excluded from arbitration, and also since the plots were 'public premises'. The Leela Group "continued to enjoy the usage of the premises on expired lease rental terms and despite the expiry of the very lease periods" on the basis of a statement that no precipitate steps would be taken pending proceedings, said Justice Sundaresan. The high court noted that Leela is itself not keen to retain the 11,000 square metres land and offered to return it. HLV Ltd, formerly known as Hotel Leela Venture Ltd, petitioned the high court this year against the AAI. The core issue raised was whether disputes over eviction under the lease deeds governing two plots leased by AAI would fall within the scope of arbitration agreements. The disputes, the high court noted, led to an "intricate and strategic web of filings of various proceedings" by Leela across tribunals and courts. The high court noted that the parties explicitly agreed to the land leased to Leela as being public premises. Hence, one need not look beyond the contract to determine if eviction is excluded from the scope of arbitration. The Leela Group is at liberty to proceed with arbitration on any facet of the lease except eviction from the leased land. The high court appointed former Madras high court Chief Justice S V Gangapurwala as the sole arbitrator for all issues barring eviction. Meta AI and Edits app now lets you edit videos using generative AI
Meta, the Mark Zuckerberg-owned company, has launched a new generative AI video editing feature that enables users to edit videos 'using a variety of preset AI prompts.' The feature is currently available in the Meta AI app, website and the Edits app. In a blog post, Meta says that users will be able to easily edit 'short-form videos using a variety of preset AI prompts' to edit and change things like their outfit, style, location and more. Currently available in the United States along with 12 more countries around the world, the new feature is inspired by Meta's Movie Gen models. The company also said that starting later this year, you will be able to edit videos with Meta AI using their 'own text prompts to make your video edits exactly as you imagine them.' Meta AI's new video editing feature is handy as users won't need any expertise to edit their recorded videos. To do so, all you need to do is upload a video to the Meta AI app, website or the Edits app and choose from more than 50 available editing prompts to transform 10 seconds of your clip. Once you are done choosing from a preset prompt, Meta AI will automatically edit your video to match the one you chose. For example, users will be able to turn their videos into a graphic novel or reimagine themselves as a vintage comic book illustration, and turn it into a video game with things like battle clothing. Moreover, you can also change the lighting in a video to 'create a dreamy mood with shimmery sparkles, pearlescent blur and soft focus.' If you use the Meta AI or Edits app to transform your video, it also has the option to quickly share the edited video directly to social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Also, Meta AI app and Meta. AI web users can choose to share these AI-edited videos directly to the Discover feed. Meta has been working on AI video generation for years now. In 2022, the company introduced its Make-A-Scene models, which could generate images, audio, video and 3D animation. A year later, it launched Llama Image foundation models, which could generate higher-quality images and videos. Finally, in 2024, Meta combined all of these technologies to create Movie Gen, a new AI model that is capable of producing custom videos and sounds and even edit recorded videos using text prompts.
