FIFA lowers prices for Club World Cup opener as projected attendance looks weak
FIFA officials have lowered ticket prices for the Club World Cup's opening match — a contest between Lionel Messi-led Inter Miami and Al Ahly FC — over concerns that potentially scores of empty seats could overshadow the game.
Tens of thousands of seats have yet to be sold to the game, according to The Athletic, which is set to take place at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on June 14 and would be the first official match of the 32-team tournament being held across the United States.
Hard Rock Stadium, home to the Dolphins, has a capacity of 65,326, and The Athletic reported that fewer than 20,000 tickets may have been sold for the match between the MLS side and the Egyptian club, though FIFA pushed back on that number in a statement.

Still, sources informed The Athletic that soccer's governing body grew concerned over ticket sales not doing as well as expected in recent weeks.
The Club World Cup will feature teams from the top leagues across the globe, including powerhouses Chelsea, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

FIFA has been selling tickets for the Club World Cup using a dynamic pricing model, which means prices can spike or drop based on demand.
The cheapest ticket for the Inter Miami Match against Al Ahly was just $55.75 on Ticketmaster when The Post searched late Wednesday night.
Those tickets were listed at $230 in January, according to The Athletic.
But prices for games involving other teams have gone the opposite way, such as matches involving Real Madrid, where ticket prices are in the hundreds of dollars.

'We are introducing many new, successful clubs from all over the world to the world through this tournament being staged in the 11 cities across the United States. Overall, we anticipate great attendances throughout the competition for this first-ever edition — a tournament that we believe will grow edition-on-edition,' FIFFA told the outlet in a statement.
FIFA announced the training sites for all 32 teams in the tournament, which included four sites in New Jersey that would be utilized by African club Al Ahly FC, Brazilian side CR Flamengo, Portuguese club FC Porto and Red Bull Salzburg.
Rutgers University's Piscataway campus and the New York Red Bulls' training facility in Whippany, New Jersey, will be among the places hosting teams.

Jay-Z places $1 million NBA Finals bet on Thunder and it immediately blows up in his face
Gambling content 21+. The New York Post may receive an affiliate commission if you sign up through our links. Read our editorial standards for more information. Music Mogul Jay-Z may have gone from rags to riches and back to rags again. The world-renowned artist placed one of the biggest bets of the year Thursday, wagering $1 million at the platform he is invested in, Fanatics Sportsbook, on the Thunder to defeat the Pacers in the NBA Finals in five games (4-1). The $1 million wager would profit $2.3 million if it were to happen, although the likelihood of that occurring now is bleak after Oklahoma City blew a double-digit lead and lost Game 1, 111-110. Jay-Z invested $350 million of his own money into Fanatics in 2021. The Thunder now have to win four straight games to win the NBA Finals in five games, something that Fanatics is still giving rather generous +310 odds to happen. Such an outcome — losing Game 1 then winning the next four — has happened only three times since 1990 and only twice when the home team dropped the first contest. The 1991 Bulls accomplished the feat against the Magic Johnson-led Lakers, while Kobe Bryant and the Lakers did so against the Allen Iverson 76ers in 2001. Shai-Gilgeous Alexander and the Thunder have their work cut out for them. NBAE via Getty Images Both champions lost Game 1 at home before rebounding. The feat hasn't happened since the 2012 Miami Heat defeated the Thunder, and has only happened six times in NBA history since 1953. Betting on the NBA? This is all to say, Jay-Z has 99 Problems and the Oklahoma City Thunder could certainly be one. Oklahoma City is currently a massive Game 2 favorite, opening as a massive 11-point favorite. Trent Alexander-Arnold told he's still nowhere near as good as 35-year-old RB
England manager Thomas Tuchel has been told that Kyle Walker remains a better all-round player than former Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold, as the Three Lions prepare to face Finland and Senegal over the next few days. Advertisement England has been blessed with top-quality right-backs in recent times, with Walker, 35, and Alexander-Arnold also facing competition from Chelsea's Reece James. Walker's club career took an unexpected turn this year, as he was sent to AC Milan on loan for the second half of the season — after reportedly being snubbed by Real Madrid — following a disappointing start to the campaign. Although Madrid wasn't keen on Walker, Alexander-Arnold has found a place on the Spanish team's roster. Liverpool acted quickly to replace him with Jeremie Frimpong, and the right-back's former Bayer Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz could also join the Reds. READ MORE: Liverpool transfer news LIVE: Rayan Cherki decision, Florian Wirtz 'confirms' deal, Kerkez medical READ MORE: Liverpool transfer target 'says yes' to Reds in record-breaking deal Advertisement Walker started just 11 games for Milan but was still named in the England squad for the World Cup qualifier against Finland as well as next week's friendly against Senegal. Former England winger Chris Waddle suggested that Walker should get the nod. "It's a really strange one," Waddle said of Walker's current career situation while speaking to "He's been in and out of the team at Milan. "It was a good move to go there, and when I watch him play he clearly has the pace to deal with the top-level stuff, but he's still been an inconsistent starter. Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold are among England's best right-backs "Now, that might be because he doesn't fit their tactics right now, or because they just played so many games, but even if it was a sensible move to make at the time, it hasn't quite gone as he'd have hoped. Advertisement "At the same time, it's hard to name a better English right-back. Trent Alexander-Arnold can be exceptional but he's not outstanding as a true defender. "He's got his talents, there's no denying it, with exceptional passing and dead-ball delivery, but if it's him or Walker, we're not blessed in that position for a young right-back who does what you expect. I think Kyle is the pick of the two right now, his all-round game puts him ahead of the rest." Alexander-Arnold's move from Liverpool to Real Madrid was confirmed at the end of May, with the Spanish club paying the Reds an $11 million transfer fee — despite the player's Liverpool contract being due to expire just a few weeks later. That's because Madrid wanted Alexander-Arnold to be part of Xabi Alonso's squad for the start of the Club World Cup, which gets under way in the middle of June. Madrid could have waited until July 1 to sign Alexander-Arnold on a free transfer, and he would have been eligible to play in Los Blancos' remaining games in the tournament, but the Spanish giant was keen for the player to have a period of integration in the weeks building up to the revamped event.

Pacers' Rick Carlisle backs Doris Burke after rumors swirl about her future in top ESPN booth
Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle said it was 'sad' to see Wednesday's report from The Athletic speculating on Doris Burke's future in ESPN's top NBA broadcasting booth before the 2025 NBA Finals tipped off. Prior to Game 1 of the Pacers-Thunder series, Carlisle began his pregame availability Thursday with a tribute to Burke, who is part of ESPN's lead NBA broadcast team with Mike Breen and Richard Jefferson, and explained how she has inspired other woman broadcasters. 'Certainly, media people have experienced scrutiny,' Carlisle said. 'Broadcasting, it's a dynamic business and you're subjected to things from unnamed sources. It's just part of it. So, I saw the things that were leaked [Wednesday] about Doris Burke, and I just want to say a couple things. 4 (L-R) Richard Jefferson, Doris Burke, and Mike Breen on the ESPN broadcast before Game 3 of the Oklahoma City Thunder-Minnesota Timberwolves Western Conference finals on May 24, 2025. YouTube/Indy Star 'She has changed the game for women in broadcasting,' Carlisle continued before using his 21-year-old daughter as an example of the way Burke has empowered women through her broadcasting career. '… Doris is a great example of courage and putting herself out there. It was just so sad to see these reports leaked, really, unnecessarily, before such a celebrated event. 'Doris is a friend. I've asked her many times, 'Why don't you get into coaching?' because she has such great knowledge. There are many women who she's paved the way for.' Carlisle went on to name more than half a dozen women working in NBA television media whom Burke has inspired during her career, including Knicks broadcaster Monica McNutt and Sarah Kustok, who calls Nets games for YES Network, among other broadcast roles. The coach's comments came after The Athletic reported Burke could be removed from ESPN's NBA Finals coverage next season. The report detailed how Burke's spot in the Finals broadcast is not guaranteed for next season, per ESPN's preliminary plans. 4 Richard Jefferson, Doris Burke and Mike Breen speak during Game 1 of the NBA Finals between the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder on June 5, 2025 at Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. ESPN intends to re-sign Jefferson, whose contract is expiring, according to the outlet. The Athletic also noted Amazon Prime Video has expressed interest in the former NBA champ.
