North Carolina substitute teacher charged in ATV crash that killed 2 high school football players

NBC News25-02-2025

A North Carolina substitute teacher has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the deaths of two teenage boys who died in an ATV crash last year, authorities announced.
Ashley Marie Darity, 34, was arrested on Feb. 13 and charged with two counts of felony involuntary manslaughter in the Aug. 25, 2024, ATV accident that killed Layne Jones and Jayden Reynaldo, the Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) division of North Carolina Department of Public Safety's said.
Jones and Reynaldo were both student football players at Rosman High School in Transylvania County, located about 40 miles southwest of Asheville.
The teens were driving an ATV on Old Wagon Road in Transylvania County around 1 a.m. on Aug. 25 when they went off the road, hit a tree and were ejected from the vehicle. They were pronounced dead at the scene, The Asheville Citizen-Times reported.
The ALE said Tuesday that speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.
Darity was arrested by ALE special agents. Officials did not disclose details of her relationship to the students nor what led to the charges.
Darity was a substitute teacher at Transylvania County Schools District, which includes Rosman, from October 2021 to December 2023, district spokesperson Tessa Brown said.
She was released from custody after posting $20,000 bond, according to online court filings. An attorney for her did not immediately respond to NBC News' request for comment.
Two other people were arrested in the investigation into the crash as well: Brandon Kaine Rathbone, 47, and Patricia Faye Whitehead, 33, both of Balsam Grove. It's not immediately clear if the two have retained lawyers.
They were arrested and charged with aiding and abetting a person less than 21 years of age in the possession and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages. The NCDPS said these arrests were "based on a previous incident discovered during this investigation that occurred at the same residence."
A warrant for arrest for Rathbone said the date of offense unfolded June 10, 2023. The warrant alleged he purchased a keg and hosted an underage house party. He and Whitehead allegedly held a female juvenile up to do a keg stand to consume the alcohol.
Whitehead's warrant further alleged she purchased Twisted Tea for a person under the age of 21 in February 2023.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
The district said in a press release on Aug. 25 that two Rosman students died in an accident, calling the deaths 'an unimaginable loss.' Rosman High School also shared photos of the two athletes in their football uniforms writing: 'Layne and Jayden have left an imprint on our hearts. We grieve together.'

London scientist found dismembered in suitcase on outskirts of Colombian city

Police in Colombia have offered a $12,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the murder of an Italian tourist who had travelled from London after working for eight years at the Royal Biological Society. The victim's dismembered remains were discovered in a suitcase on the city's outskirts, prompting a widespread investigation. In a message posted on X on Monday, Santa Marta Mayor Carlos Pinedo promised the gruesome death of Alessandro Coatti would not go unpunished. "Delinquents must know that in Santa Marta there is no room for criminality, we will chase them until we bring them to justice," he wrote. Investigators said the Italian tourist was dismembered after he was killed, with some of his remains stuffed into a black suitcase found by police Sunday. Coatti was a 42-year-old molecular biologist who was traveling in South America after working in London for eight years at the Royal Biological Society. The Royal Biological Society paid tribute to him in a statement after the news was announced. It read: 'Alessandro, known as Ale, worked for the Royal Society of Biology for eight years as Science Policy Officer in the Science Policy team before being promoted to Senior Science Policy Officer. 'He was a passionate and dedicated scientist, leading RSB animal science work, writing numerous submissions, organising events, and giving evidence in the House of Commons. He left the RSB at the end of 2024 to volunteer in Ecuador and travel in South America. 'Ale was funny, warm, intelligent, loved by everyone he worked with, and will be deeply missed by all who knew and worked with him. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to his friends and family at this truly awful time.' A hotel worker who spoke to Colombian newspaper El Tiempo said Coatti had inquired about visiting the village of Minca and was conducting research on local animal species. Santa Marta is surrounded by pristine beaches and lush mountains that have made it a popular destination with international travelers. The city of half a million people has struggled to contain crime, however, and police registered 194 murders in 2024.

Tributes to London scientist after dismembered body parts found in Colombia

Tributes have been paid to a London scientist after dismembered body parts were found in a suitcase in Colombia. Alessandro Coatti quit his job at the British Royal Society of Biology (RSB) late last year to travel and volunteer in South America. But remains believed to belong to Mr Coatti were discovered in gruesome circumstances in the city of Santa Marta, near a stadium and a river, with a reward now offered to track down his suspected killers. The city's mayor, Carlos Pinedo Cuello, announced on Monday he was offering $50 million pesos (£9,000) for any information relating to the murder. 'This crime will not go unpunished. The criminals must know that crime has no place in Santa Marta. We will pursue them until they are brought to justice,' he wrote on social media. Mr Coatti, known as Ale to friends, had worked for the RSB for eight years. The society said it was 'devastated' to announce the news of his death. The RSB said Mr Coatti, an Italian citizen, had left the organisation to volunteer in Ecuador and travel in South America. 'Ale was funny and kind. He was intellectually curious about everything, he always had a question ... or three, about everything,' a spokesperson from the RSB told The Independent. 'He was passionate about his work at RSB, about the biosciences in general and about the environment. He was always thoughtful and committed and engaged with his complex policy areas with enthusiasm. He loved cycling and he loved cooking.' The spokesperson added: 'He had so many close friends at RSB and in the bioscience world more widely. He was greatly loved by everyone he worked with. He had many friends here in the UK and family back in Italy.' Mr Coatti began working at the RSB as a science policy officer before being promoted to senior science policy officer, leading the RSB's work in animal science and giving evidence in the House of Commons. According to his LinkedIn, Mr Coatti did postgraduate research at University College London from September 2011 to June 2013, and prior to that he was a science policy intern at the Italian Embassy in London. The Italian Embassy in London, the British Foreign Office and Santa Marta Police have been contacted for comment. Just last week Santa Marta was nominated for South America's leading tourist attraction in the 2025 World Travel Awards, the city's mayor said, thanks to its Tayrona National Park. 'How proud we are, my people! Just a few months away from turning 500, the world is recognizing the greatness of our Pearl,' he wrote on X.
