UK's Mondi & Evonik launch sustainable chemical packaging

Fibre2Fashion24-04-2025

Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, ? has created a recyclable pre-made paper bag for chemical powders, working in partnership with chemical company Evonik.
Mondi and Evonik have developed a recyclable, lightweight paper bag for fumed silica, reducing packaging weight by 30 per cent and cutting carbon emissions. Made from Mondi's high porosity kraft paper, the bag is plastic-free, durable, and recyclable, offering efficient filling and strong sealing. The innovation supports both firms' sustainability and circular economy goals.
The lightweight bag has been developed to reduce the carbon footprint of packaging for fumed silica, which is used as a performance additive in various industrial and consumer applications.
Evonik started investigating more sustainable packaging in 2022 and worked closely with Mondi to find an innovative solution. The collaboration resulted in a two-ply pre-made paper-based bag, removing a plastic-coated paper layer from the previous packaging. This means that less paper and plastic is used, resulting in an overall weight reduction of the packaging by 30%, compared to the previous solution. The new paper bag also has a lower carbon footprint which was assessed in Mondi's in-house life cycle-based PIA (Product Impact Assessment) tool. Following intensive tests conducted by Evonik, the suitability and product protection of the new bags were proven, and the bags are now launched to the market.
The new bag was created using Mondi's high porosity kraft paper, which offers superior strength, durability and stretch. Mondi applies a small amount of spot coating to the bag, enabling Evonik to securely seal it after filling. The new bag is recyclable according to the CEPI v.3 test method and 4evergreen's fibre-based packaging recyclability evaluation protocol.
High-quality packaging that protects the products while reducing waste is one of Evonik's goals. The fine powder packaging with tailor-made properties must not only be easy and efficient to fill but also withstand the demanding conditions of vacuum chamber filling. Mondi's high porosity kraft paper used for the new bags is not coated which allows swift air release, reduces vacuum filling time, and the closing mechanism ensures tight and secure packaging, tested to meet the highest quality standards. After the filling process, Evonik palletises the bags and shrink-wraps the pallets for storage and transport.
'At Evonik, we are committed to enabling transformation and going beyond the familiar. In the Smart Effects business line, we collaborate closely with our partners on projects focused on CO2 reduction, portfolio transformation, and the circular economy. Our partnership with Mondi on packaging transformation exemplifies how every part of our business is aligned on the same sustainable path.'
Susanne Pellengahr, Head of Sustainability Transformation at Evonik's Smart Effects business line.
Florian Ullrich, Sales Director Paper Bags Germany, Mondi says: 'Valve bags are designed for high-speed filling and with sensitive contents such as these specialty chemical powders, high quality material and secure closing options are also paramount. Being able to deliver and indeed improve on these elements, while reducing the carbon footprint of the packaging, was a challenge we were delighted to answer alongside Evonik.' More bad news for bankrupt Pakistan, Shehbaz govt decides to sell one of country's biggest company, the company is... After India's Operation Sindoor, Pakistan's condition seems to be worsening and now it's clearly visible too. One major sign of this is the upcoming sale of one of its biggest companies. The Pakistani government is preparing to sell its national airline, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), to private players and reports say that they have already started inviting bids for it. Originally, the last date to submit bids was June 3, but it has now been extended to June 19. This move gives potential buyers more time to prepare their proposals to take over PIA. The government wants more people to participate in the bidding process, which is why they have given a 15-day extension. This sale is considered one of the biggest and most important privatization steps in Pakistan's recent history. Govt offering to sell between 51-100 per cent of its ownership A senior official from Pakistan's Privatization Commission confirmed to The News that the deadline for submitting bids has been extended, but all other terms and conditions for the sale remain unchanged. The government is offering to sell between 51 per cent and 100 per cent of its ownership in PIA, along with full management control. When asked why the deadline was extended, the official said it was because of the Eid-ul-Adha holiday. This move comes as part of the government's plan to reduce its fiscal deficit, fix loss-making state-owned enterprises, and attract foreign investment. The privatization of PIA is also part of the broader economic reforms agreed upon with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) program. What was the plan earlier? To make the deal more attractive, the Pakistani government has introduced new incentives. These include GST (Goods and Services Tax) exemptions on new aircraft and removing PIA's loans from its balance sheet. The goal is to present potential buyers with a 'clean, zero-debt' balance sheet. A revised price benchmark for the deal may also be set soon. This new plan is much simpler and more straightforward compared to the previous failed attempt. Earlier, the government had offered 60 per cent of shares with an optional 15 per cent top-up. However, that plan failed mainly because of PIA's huge negative equity of 45 billion rupees and an 18 per cent GST on aircraft, which turned buyers away. EY Consulting LLC is advising the Privatization Commission on this sale. The government hopes to complete the process within this calendar year.

Pakistan International Airlines launches direct flights from Lahore to Paris; to be operational from June 18

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has announced the launch of a direct flight from Lahore to Paris, starting June 18, ARY News reported. According to PIA management, the weekly flight will operate from Lahore to Paris. The PIA already operates two weekly flights from Islamabad to Paris. PIA has reportedly been operating profitably since March 2024, Parliamentary Secretary Zeb Jaffar highlighted at the National Assembly during the Question Hour on Wednesday. Responding to a question from MNA Sharmila Faruqi, Zeb Jaffar stated that irresponsible statements made on the floor of the House in the past had damaged the reputation and business of the airline. "The consequences of those remarks were felt by the country," she added. Jaffar said PIA has now resumed flights to the European Union, including two destinations in Europe, such as Paris. She futher mentioned that the government had engaged in dialogue with the EU Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), which paved the way for restarting flights to Paris. Talks with UK aviation authorities are also underway. According to ARY News, discussions are also ongoing with Turkish Airlines, which is expected to benefit Pakistani travellers. The government is actively working to expand PIA's network to profitable routes, including the Middle East and North Africa. She added that efforts to make the national airline more profitable are continuing, and their impact will become more visible in the coming months. Earlier, PIA introduced direct flights from Lahore to Baku, Azerbaijan. The flights will operate twice a week, departing every Saturday and Wednesday. To introduce the new route, PIA organised an event for travel agents and tour operators, providing them with flight details and benefits, as per ARY News. The direct air link will make it easier for people to travel between the two countries.
