Pope's form, Stokes' fitness and pace options – the questions facing England
Will Ben Stokes be fully fit?
England are a completely different team when their inspirational captain is firing on all cylinders. He was in brilliant form this summer, rolling back the years with ball in hand, but missed the Kia Oval decider with a shoulder problem. A six-to-10-week lay-off will follow but any further setbacks would raise serious alarms. Having been struck down by knee, hip, hamstring and shoulder injuries in the past two years, is it too optimistic to expect him to be in peak condition throughout a gruelling tour?
What is the pace bowling pecking order?
Who will join Jofra Archer in England's frontline pace attack? (Martin Rickett/PA)
England have talked up the importance of building deep reserves of fast bowlers but when the first Test kicks off in Perth they must be clear on their best combination. Jofra Archer looks certain to be in it after his long-awaited comeback, Mark Wood hopes to be back after missing the entire Test season, while Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Jamie Overton, Chris Woakes and Sam Cook all played this summer. Woakes looks like missing out with a dislocated shoulder, but how do the others stack up?
How do they get the best out of Ollie Pope?
Ollie Pope remains inconsistent (Ben Whitley/PA)
A big hundred against Zimbabwe and another century in his first knock against India removed some of the questions that had been circling about Pope's spot at number three. But he finished the series averaging 34 and was 10th on the run-scoring charts. Jacob Bethell's disappointing effort in the fifth Test against India has weakened his case as a replacement but England need more from a senior player in a key position. Could taking the vice-captaincy off him and promoting white-ball skipper Harry Brook be part of the answer?
Is the spin situation settled?
Is Shoaib Bashir the man to carry England's spin threat? (Joe Giddens/PA)
A lot of faith has been placed in Shoaib Bashir, with England backing their hunch that he can do well in Australia. It has been a mixed bag so far, with 68 wickets in 19 Tests but a stubbornly high average of 39. His broken finger opened the door for them to have an overdue second look at Liam Dawson, but the county scene's standard-bearer was dropped after taking one for 140 at Old Trafford. Will he travel as competition for Bashir, could there be a return to Jack Leach or might England look at using all-pace attacks for some Ashes contests?
How will they prepare for the war of words?
David Warner, right, unsurprisingly fired an early shot in the phoney war (Mike Egerton/PA)
Australian players, fans and media cheerleaders have been paying close attention to the India series and it is has not been hard to realise the long-range sledging has already started. From David Warner's recent jibe at Joe Root to the social media barrage about the merits, or otherwise, of 'Bazball', the heat is already rising. Expect that to continue all the way until Glenn McGrath shockingly predicts a 5-0 win for Australia. England have refused to entertain much Ashes talk in recent months but the temptation will rise as the weeks tick by. Will they fire some broadsides of their own or keep things on the field?

Mikel Arteta shares the MOST IMPORTANT trait he looks for in a signing - and the two players he must gel with in Arsenal dressing room
Mikel Arteta has revealed the crucial trait he looks for in a transfer target and the two players any new signing must gel with in the Arsenal dressing room. As they continue to try and end their more than 20-year wait for the Premier League title, the Gunners have made a number of high-profile signings in recent years. They scooped England midfielder Declan Rice in a £105million deal a couple of years ago, in the same transfer window they splashed out more than £60m on rival Chelsea forward Kai Havertz. And the club's big spending certainly hasn't stopped this summer, with Arteta notably bolstering his squad with Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, Noni Madueke from Chelsea and the highly-sought after Viktor Gyokeres. But despite the undoubted quality on the pitch of Arsenal's glitzy new additions, Arteta revealed this week that a good personality is the most important trait he looks for in a player. He made the surprising revelation while speaking at the announcement of his new role as Under Armour's global ambassador this week, saying: 'Personality (is the most important trait. Without that, you have no chance. You have to look at somebody's eyes. The Gunners have bolstered their squad this summer with the signings of Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke, as well as Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi 'When I go to sign a player, sometimes it's on Zoom and I open the laptop. It's the first impression. 'Is this guy ready to put that jersey on, work in that dressing room and take all the noise that us surrounding his signing and deal with it in the right way? 'And then we go to the qualities and how this player is going to relate to other people because at the end, this player is going to have to glide into the dressing room. So, you have to imagine this personality and in this position and how they are going to connect with Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.' The Gunners are gearing up for the start of their Premier League campaign on Sunday, when they take on Manchester United at Old Trafford in an important game for both managers. After a dire first season at the helm, Ruben Amorim will be hoping to start his second term strongly after bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbuemo and most recently Benjamin Sesko. While Arteta will be looking to live up to fans' expectations of a trophy this season after plugging the hole up-front which blighted the Gunners last season with Viktor Gyokeres. But Amorim is more likely than most managers to be able to stop the powerful Swede having managed him at Sporting Lisbon. Indeed, in quotes which recirculated this week, back in March 2024 the Portuguese coach gave a brutal assessment of Gyokeres' game, highlighting a major flaw. 'There's a lot Gyokeres needs to improve on,' Amorim had said in the aftermath of Sporting crashing out of the Europa League to Atalanta by virtue of a 3-2 aggregate defeat. 'He plays the same way against a slow or a fast centre-back. Everything he does in the Portuguese First Division, he does against Atalanta. 'He can still improve his understanding of the game. He still lacks defensive reaction, and all coaches look at that.' Gyokeres will no-doubt be looking to get his Arsenal career off to a bang on Sunday with a goal against his former boss's new side.

Salford's Wakefield clash called off after Red Devils failed to raise team
Salford's Betfred Super League match against Wakefield on Sunday has been called off after the crisis-hit Red Devils were unable to raise a team. Salford have lost a number of top players in recent weeks due to their ongoing financial turmoil, and cited 'significant concerns regarding player welfare' for the cancellation. Although the club insist the decision is a one-off, the move will inevitably raise concerns over their ability to complete the season, with five more rounds remaining. Salford said in a statement: 'The Round 22 Betfred Super League fixture between Salford Red Devils and Wakefield Trinity which was scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled. 'The Club have reluctantly taken this decision as there were significant concerns regarding player welfare and have been in consultation with the Rugby Football League, RL Commercial and Rugby League Cares. 'As a result, the RFL Board will determine the outcome of the fixture in line with the RFL Operational Rules requirements early next week.' According to a precedent set last month when Warrington women forfeited their match against St Helens, Wakefield will duly be awarded a 48-0 victory. The move is the latest development in a shocking season for Salford, who have seen an exodus of key players in recent weeks due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the financial position of the new owners. Salford have won just two matches this season, and have increasingly been forced to blood youth and academy players despite being given special dispensation to sign loan players in recent weeks, including in last week's 80-6 defeat at Hull FC. Salford added: 'Of the 17 available for Sunday's fixture, there are only two senior players who have featured at Super League level over the last 12 months, with Academy products making up the rest of the current playing squad. 'Eleven members of the first-grade team are currently injured – although a number of those are expected to be available for Salford's next scheduled fixture against Leigh Leopards. 'The club has been fortunate to take on a number of loan players from opposing Super League teams over the course of the season and their efforts in helping us during these testing times has been greatly appreciated.'
