City Girls, Trina, Uncle Luke, More Honored With Street Names In Miami

Yahoo21-03-2025
South Florida has plans to celebrate their music acts in a major way. According to local news station NBC6, the Miami-Dade County Commission approved the naming of streets to reflect the legacy of talent from the area. The plan continues the goal set by District 3 Commissioner Keon Hardemon who proposed the initiative, to continue the revival of the historic neighborhood.
'If you play this music to the people who are from this area, they are going to light up like it's the Fourth of July,' detailed Hardemon. 'The essence of this is to encourage economic development in our community. The essence of this is to… let people know that this exists in Miami-Dade County and you should come and see it.'
According to the outlet, the streets are located on 8th Avenue in Liberty City and the artists selected reflect an important story. To be considered, artists must have achieved significant chart success such as being placed on the Billboard Top 100 and Billboard 200 and contributed to the cultural identity of Miami-Dade County and simulated the local economy either by having concerts or through philanthropic efforts.
'In the 1950s or so, during the time of segregation, 18th Avenue was the place to be,' Hardemon detailed, explaining how Black artists were welcome. 'It had juke joints, it had bars, it had restaurants, and it had living quarters… that's why they named it Broadway.'
A majority of the street names will reflect the Hip-Hop and Rap legacy of South Florida including recognition for Trina, Trick Daddy, Uncle Luke, Rick Ross, Ball Greezy, Mike Smiff, and City Girls. Betty Wright, PitBull, FloRida, and more also made the cut.
'It gives you hope,' said Mike Smiff's brother Rondo Smiff to CBS News. 'It lets you know that no matter where you start, you always have a destination.'
'This is very exciting,' added the rapper's mother. 'We've gone from being working homeless to now having a legacy for our grandkids and for the community.'
As noted by CBS, in addition the new street names, there are planned murals honoring local artists to be painted throughout the neighborhood.

Sean Kingston Sentenced to 42 Months in Prison for Fraud Scheme Topping $1 Million

Sean Kingston was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison Friday after he and his mother were convicted of defrauding multiple vendors of more than $1 million in luxury items ranging from high-end watches to a bulletproof Cadillac Escalade. In a filing earlier this week, the 'Beautiful Girls' singer pleaded with the judge to spare him any time behind bars. Kingston, 35, urged the judge to reject the five-to-six years in federal detention recommended by probation officials and sentence him to home detention along with an order to pay restitution. More from Rolling Stone Judge Slashes Sara Rivers' Lawsuit Against Sean Combs Priscilla Presley Sued for $50 Million by Partners She Accused of Elder Abuse Kid Cudi Declined to Testify Against Diddy Twice, Then Had No Choice: 'Hated Every Minute' At the sentencing Friday, Judge David Leibowitz opted to go between the probation recommendation and defense request, handing down his sentence of 42 months in prison and three years of supervised release. The judge set a restitution hearing for Oct. 16. 'We are content that the court did not go with the government's request of five years and sentenced Sean below the sentencing guidelines instead,' Kingston's lawyer Zeljka Bozanic said in a statement sent to Rolling Stone. 'It is important to note that most of the restitution in this case was paid back, even before these charges were brought. Sean is taking this as a learning experience and will continue moving forward in a positive direction. We are actively reviewing all available options, including potential appeals, to ensure his rights are fully protected.' Kingston, whose legal name is Kisean Anderson, argued in a Monday court filing that leniency was warranted in his case because he had accepted responsibility for his actions, his crimes were non-violent, and several family members depend on him financially. He also cited his history of charitable work. 'Mr. Anderson is deeply remorseful for his conduct and involvement in this scheme and has had time to step back and reflect on his actions and how to make amends,' the filing said. 'Mr. Anderson accepted responsibility in this case and has made all the positive steps toward learning and growing from this situation.' At a separate hearing last month, Kingston's mother, Janice Turner, was sentenced to five years in prison and three years of probation. Turner apologized to the court for her conduct. 'I'm sorry. My intention was to keep my son afloat in this difficult industry,' she said. 'They used him and abused him. I am begging for mercy for me and my son.' Kingston and his mother were indicted last year on charges they engaged in a wire fraud scheme between April 2023 and March 2024. Prosecutors said Anderson reached out to his victims online and negotiated the purchase of high-end merchandise such as the Escalade, jewelry, and a massive, 232-inch LED TV. Officials said Anderson would invite the victims to his high-end homes in the Broward County area and use his celebrity status to lull them into trusting him. When payment was due for the merchandise, Anderson or his mother would text the victims fake wire receipts, according to court filings. When the funds never materialized, the victims filed lawsuits or turned to law enforcement. A jury convicted the mother-son duo after less than four hours of deliberations on March 28. According to Florida outlet Local10, Turner was immediately remanded to federal custody as Anderson cried out, 'Protect my mother.' Kingston burst onto the music scene at age 17 in 2007 when his monster hit 'Beautiful Girls' – a reggae-infused pop single that sampled the 1961 song 'Stand by Me' by Ben E. King – hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100. Best of Rolling Stone Sly and the Family Stone: 20 Essential Songs The 50 Greatest Eminem Songs All 274 of Taylor Swift's Songs, Ranked

Playboy is moving its headquarters from Los Angeles to Miami Beach, opening new club

Playboy plans to relocate its global headquarters from Los Angeles to Miami Beach and open a Playboy club there. The Miami Beach headquarters at the top of a luxury office building will include studios to support Playboy's "growing creator network" and the club will have a restaurant as well as a members-only section inspired by the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles, the company said Thursday in a statement. "Miami Beach is among the most dynamic and culturally influential cities in the country, making it the ideal home for Playboy's next chapter," Ben Kohn, CEO of Playboy Inc., said in the statement. The first Playboy Magazine was published in 1953, featuring Marilyn Monroe on the cover and in a "Sweetheart of the Month" color nude photo inside. The first Playboy Club opened in 1960 in Chicago, which was the headquarters of the company at the time, and the company opened up clubs around the world. In 2020, Playboy ceased publishing its monthly print magazine, sticking instead with online content.

Plans for new La Fiesta de Elgin parade canceled by lack of entries

Plans for a La Fiesta de Elgin parade have been scrapped because too few people signed up to participate, but that won't stop them from trying again next year, organizers said. This year, they will return to the traditional caravan of cars, an event that has been held in past Elgin celebrations of Mexican Independence Day. La Fiesta de Elgin also will offer the traditional elements of live music, food vendors, a market and fireworks when it's held Saturday, Sept. 13. Making the jump from a caravan to parade proved more difficult than anticipated, according to Elgin City Councilman Anthony Ortiz. Friends of Masons organized the first caravan five years ago and approached the city last year about replacing it with a downtown parade, similar to the one held for the Fourth of July but as a gathering that would put the spotlight on Hispanic culture, Ortiz said. While a committee started putting plans together for the event in January, it became clear in the last few weeks that they would not have enough entries to pull it off, he said. 'It's our first year doing it. People just didn't know about it,' Oritz said. 'We have to go back to the drawing board and educate the community, tell them we are doing a parade and get them to sign up.' Ortiz said he hopes the event will make its debut next year and become another part of the day-long celebration, but until then the caravan will remain one of the main La Fiesta activities organized by the city in partnership with Centro de Informacion, Epic Real Estate Group, Elgin State Bank and Friends of Masons, he said. And attendees this year can look forward to an expanded La Fiesta de Elgin Mercado, which will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Riverside Drive. The street market will have Hispanic-owned businesses, live music, a car show and family-friendly activities, organizers said. Hours for the free evening festival will be 5 to 11 p.m. at downtown Festival Park, where a large replica of Mexico City's Angel of Independence will be on display and family activities, like a piñata smash, will be held. Bands slated to perform this year are Los Yaguarú, Estilo Al Norte, Sonora Dinamita and Banda Los Sebastianes. DJ Eddy P will serve as MC and be spinning tunes between sets. The celebration also will include El Grito, the traditional call for Mexico's independence, and will end with fireworks. As for the caravan, it is set to start at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Slade and Douglas avenues and end on Highland Avenue. Additional festival details can be found at
