Puey Quiñones launches his new couture atelier in LA and wows Hollywood

GMA Network14-07-2025
You knew it was going to be a different fashion show just based on the clothes on display in Puey Quiñones' new couture atelier in downtown Los Angeles.
Quiñones, the only Filipino fashion designer who has a couture dress purchased by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) as part of its heritage collection, recently wowed his Hollywood guests when he showcased some of his latest pieces for his couture collection.
The People Asia People of the Year 2024 awardee, who already has an atelier in the Philippines and a Q Bridal collection shop in Los Angeles, shared to us where he gets his inspiration for his designs.
"Inspiration for my designs comes from various sources. I often find myself drawn to art, nature, and cultural history. Additionally, I draw inspiration from the people around me. Their stories and experiences shape the way I approach fashion. Traveling also opens my eyes to different styles and practices, which I then incorporate into my work."
The couture collection, Quiñones revealed, "highlights an array of intricate designs that celebrate both contemporary and Filipino traditional aesthetics, blending luxurious and local fabrics from the Philippines with bold colors. The pieces embody elegance and innovation."
Some of the Hollywood stars and celebrities who attended included Tia Carrere, Jon Jon Briones, Reggie Lee, Melody Butiu, Joan Almedilla, Debralee Daco, Jannelle So, Bryan Geli, Omen Ortiz, Alex Pineda, Chef Lord Maynard Llera, former Miss Universe Margaret Gardiner, among others.
We were able to interview some of the guests, and below are some of their reactions.
Margaret Gardiner, author and former Miss Universe
His style is fresh elegant with elan that incorporates style that is classic and clean.
Jon Jon Briones, actor
Puey's creations were both fun and glamorous, just like the designer himself.
Reggie Lee, actor
I thought Puey's collection was elegance personified! I was blown away! Of course, I especially thought his men's collection was spectacular. Classic lines with a touch of flair that made it stand out. I can't wait to own one!
Melody Butiu, actress
I loved the bold colors and sculptural pieces! The textures and mixture of patterns were surprising and exciting. Puey gave wonderful nods to Filipino traditional styles, while allowing his playful vision to come through for some definite wow moments on the runway.
Jannelle So, TV host-producer of SoJannelle TV
I've always been a fan of Puey's. His collection was a dream woven in silk and light—ethereal, meticulous, and emotionally resonant. Every gown was a love letter to couture, blending tradition with modern grace. His work doesn't just dress the body; it moves the soul.
Bryan Geli, theater actor
Puey Quinones' collection was nothing short of a display in vision, craftsmanship, and cultural commentary. The show was like a carefully curated narrative. Each look told a story of evolution, elegance, and experimentation.
Omen Ortiz, chairman of Manila International Film Festival
The collection is truly a masterpiece, as it not only celebrates the empowerment of women but also exudes elegance and sophistication, evident in the exquisite fabric, vibrant colors, and impeccable styles.
Alex Pineda, interior designer/jeweler
I always look forward to watching Puey Quinones' fashion collections. He never disappoints; he always delivers. I am amazed by his playful manipulation of fabrics, understated elegance, studied simplicity, attention to details, and most importantly, his vision of loveliness. Bravo, my dear, Puey!

Liza Soberano thanks supporters following traumatic childhood revelation, advocates for children's rights

Following Liza Soberano's tell-all about her traumatic childhood in the "Can I Come In?" episode, the "Lisa Frankenstein" actress took to Instagram with a deeply personal post addressed to her younger self, her supporters, and to children who continue to endure abuse and exploitation. "To everyone who has commented or messaged privately, thank you so much for the kind words and the thoughtful empathy that you have conveyed to me. The world is a better place because of people like you," she began. Liza then thanked her four-year-old self for staying determined and strong despite being "in the midst of a painful, upside down world." She admitted that sharing intimate parts of her life with the world was not an easy decision, but one she felt compelled to make. According to Liza, "It is a privilege and honor to be able to share my experiences so that even just one little girl out there can feel encouraged to speak up." "As an actress, my job is to entertain, but as a public figure, my responsibility is to speak up on things that matter, from a place that matters," she said. "If I don't speak up out of discomfort or fear, what chance [do] all the scared and voiceless women and children who are still in dangerous situations have," she added. In her carousel post, Liza cited figures about how in the Philippines, "as many as 100,000 Filipino children are exploited from prostitution and thousands more in forced labor." She cited the U.S. Department of State when she said "as of 2022, 1.48 million Filipino children aged 5 to 17 were working, much in hazardous conditions." "For anyone who needs to hear this, people may try to guilt you or shame you for speaking up. Don't let them," Liza said. "Only those with hardness in their hearts would discourage your voice." "Cruel people will try to discredit your story, they'll say you are exaggerating or being self-serving, don't mind them," she added. Liza also warned against those who may exploit others' trauma for personal gain. "Only those with no light of their own need to use the sadness of others as fuel for their egos," she said. "You will shine and they will fade away." In the caption of her post, Liza urged her followers to "make a stand together, fight together, and work together to create a safer and kinder world for each other." "Bit by bit, let's make meaningful change and stop allowing the callous and greedy from driving our narrative," she said. In Liza's "Can I Come In?" episode, she talked about her traumatic childhood in the United States. She also opened up about her about her breakup with Enrique Gil. Fellow celebs quickly left supportive messages on Liza's Instagram post. On Monday, "Fast Talk with Boy Abunda" aired a previously unreleased 12-minute video of the King of Talk's interview with her in 2023, where she revealed the reason for their breakup. Liza's participation in "Can I Come In?" was first announced in May. Tim Yap, hip-hop singer Radha, more actors, dancers join ‘The Bodyguard: The Musical'

After playing the role of Narrator in Repertory Philippines' 'Peter and the Wolf' at The Theatre in Solaire early July, Tim Yap joins 'The Bodyguard: The Musical' playing the character Sy Spector. In the story, Sy Spector is publicist of lead character Rachel Marron, the character that was played by Whitney Houston in the 1992 film version. It was earlier announced Filipino-British Christine Allado will play Rachel in the Philippine premiere of 'The Bodyguard' at The Proscenium Theater in Rockwell Center, Makati City, starting September 28. Yap, the veteran host-eventologist and Sparkle talent, is no neophyte in theater. '[Prior to] playing Narrator for Peter and the Wolf for Repertory Philippines, I did some surprise appearances as Teen Angel in 'Grease the musical', also for 9 Works Theatrical,' Yap told GMA News Online via Facebook messenger. We also remember Yap playing the role of DJ Dalang, the narrator in Ballet Philippines' dance- musical theater version of 'Darna,' staged at the Cultural Center of the Philippines' Main Theater in August, 2003. Yap also co-hosted GMA Gala 2025 with Gabbi Garcia. Santi Santamaria, managing director and executive producer of 9 Works Theatrical told GMA News Online he was the one who chose Yap for the role. He added he was also the one who chose the actor for the role of Frank Farmer, the titular role of the bodyguard played by Kevin Costner in the 1992 movie version, though he can't reveal the name yet. As theater followers wait on who will play Frank, 9 Works Theatrical recently announced on their social media accounts the dancers and actors in the ensemble for the Manila premiere of 'The Bodyguard.' The much-awarded Vien King will play Agent Laney. 'Being part of 'The Bodyguard' is such an exciting ride. Full of music, tension, and high stakes. Getting the role of Agent Laney makes it even like I've ever done before. Grateful and thankful to my 9 Works family for making me part of this iconic material,' King told GMA News Online via Facebook Messenger. King has been recipient of various citations from Gawad Buhay and LEAF awards. He has been known for playing lead characters in notable productions. He was Rama in 'Rama Hari,' the acclaimed Filipino rock opera ballet created by five National Artists; Alice Reyes for direction and choreography, Ryan Cayabyab for music, Salvador Bernal for production design, and Bienvenido Lumbera for the lyrics and libretto with English Translations by Rolando Tinio. King also played Ibarra in 9 Works Theatrical's original musical 'Liwanag Sa Dilim,' Michael in 'Tick, Tick... Boom!' and Buddy Foster in the ongoing 'Side Show: The Musical' by Sandbox Collective. Incidentally, King earlier played the Half-Man Half-Woman character in the Atlantis Theatrical Entertainment Group version of Side Show that was staged from August to September in 2018 at Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium in RCBC Plaza, directed by Steven Conde. Sheena Palad plays Rachel's older sister Nicki Marron. Palad is a much-awarded gospel singer who recently acted in 9 Works' 'Going Home To Christmas,' the musical featuring the songs of Jose Mari Chan, and in Trumpets Playshops' 'Joseph The Dreamer'. CJ Navato, who is still playing Terry Connor in the ongoing 'Side Show The Musical,' is joining 'The Bodyguard' as Ray Court, a fellow bodyguard who supports Frank Farmer. Navato's more recent theatrical works were with 'Liwanag Sa Dilim' and 'One More Chance The Musical'. John Joven Uy is Bill Devaney, manager of Rachel and some kind of father figure. Uy has acted in 'Miss Saigon' (Germany) and 'Song of Joseph' (Broadway). Jasper John Jimenez plays Tony Scibelli, one of Rachel Marron's security aides. Jimenez's acting credits for the theater include 'Liwanag Sa Dilim,' 'Buruguduystunstugudunstuy,' 'Ang Huling El Bimbo' and both the musical and recent movie version of 'Himala: Isang Musikal'. Radha Cuadrado, otherwise known as Radha of Filipino-Canadian hip-hop group Kulay is part of the ensemble. 'She was in Paris when I called her [to join 'The Bodyguard'],' Santamaria told GMA News Online. Radha recently acted in 9 Works Theatrical's staging of 'Once On This Island', playing the role of Asaka, the goddess of the earth. For rock music fanatics, Radha can be remembered having a duet with Basti Artadi in the song 'A Matter of Time' for Wolfgang's 'Acoustica,' the live album recorded two-and-half decades ago at the Music Museum. They've been performing the song in some rare live sessions over the years. Other members of the ensemble are Jasmine Fitzgerald ('Once On This Island,' 'Rent,' 'Passion'); Fay Castro ('Rent,' 'Once On This Island,' 'Liwanag Sa Dilim Musical,' 'Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,' 'Snow White and the Prince,' 'All Out of Love,' 'Side Show: The Musical'); Paji Arceo ('Liwanag Sa Dilim,' 'One More Chance The Musical'); Lorenz Martinez ('Once on This Island,' 'Joseph The Dreamer'); Elian Santos ('Liwanag Sa Dilim,' 'Si Medea,' 'Ibarra,' 'Joseph the Dreamer'); and Giani Sarita ('Liwanag Sa Dilim'). The team of dancers includes Julio Laforteza, Carmelle 'Ching' Ros, Natalie Duque, Vyen Villanueva, Alex Aure, Richardson Yadao, Iya Villanueva and Winchester Lopez. Follow 9 Works Theatrical's socials for other announcements on the much-awaited musical. — LA, GMA Integrated News
