Chanos Hits Back Strategy's Saylor, Calling Him a ‘Salesman'

Chanos Hits Back Strategy's Saylor, Calling Him a ‘Salesman'

Minta day ago

(Bloomberg) -- Famed short-seller Jim Chanos denounced Strategy's Michael Saylor for using a misleading model to value his crypto-treasury firm and reemphasized his recommendation to short its shares and buy Bitcoin instead.
'Michael Saylor is a wonderful salesman,' Chanos said during a Bloomberg TV interview on Wednesday. While the executive chairman of Strategy argued his business should not be valued just on the basis of its Bitcoin holdings, Chanos called that 'financial gibberish.'
'This is akin to saying my house that rose in value from $450,000 to $500,000 last year is not worth $500,000. It's worth $1.5 million because it is worth $500,000 plus a 20 multiple on the $50,000 increase,' Chanos said. 'Of course, that's absurd. But that is the claim he is making.'
Chanos also pointed out that the market for preferred shares, which Saylor touted as a robust pool for raising capital, is 'tiny' relative to common shares.
Saylor's firm, which was formerly known as MicroStrategy, has sold roughly $35 billion worth of securities since 2024 to fund Bitcoin purchases. That includes $33 billion in common shares and convertible bonds as well as about $2 billion in preferred units issued in recent months.
'In his own words, he makes the case that you have to be crazy to buy these preferreds. He will pay a dividend, maybe. It's not redeemable. It's perpetual. If I don't pay the dividends, they are not cumulative. I don't have to pay them back. Who in their mind institutionally would buy these preferreds?' Chanos said.
Strategy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Chanos noted that the company's so-called mNAV — the stock's premium relative to the value of its Bitcoin holdings — currently stands at about 1.8 times, nearing its historic average, and 'it should be 1.' He said he put on the trade and advised clients when the level was between 2.2 and 2.3 times.
Saylor previously said if the premium declines enough, Strategy will buy back its common shares. 'I can assure you that if it trades below 1, I will have covered my shorts,' Chanos said.
In the same interview, the short seller also discussed his bearish bet on used car retailer Carvana Co. — a position he initially developed in 2022 and 2023. He is revisiting it now after the company's stock gained nearly 100%. Chanos claimed that about 70% of Carvana's operating income over the past year comes from the sale of subprime loans, but that revenues from car sales are declining. What's more, a dramatic increase in the stock's insider selling over the past two months is a warning sign, he added.

Adobe Gives Sales Outlook That Fails to Convince AI Skeptics

(Bloomberg) -- Adobe Inc. gave a sales outlook for the current quarter that topped analysts' estimates, but investors remain skeptical that the leader in creative software can outduel AI-focused upstarts. Sales will be about $5.88 billion to $5.93 billion in the period ending in August, the company said Thursday in a statement. Analysts, on average, estimated $5.88 billion. Profit, excluding some items, will be $5.15 a share to $5.20 a share, compared with the average projection of $5.11. Adobe has become a central focus of investors debating whether artificial intelligence tools will disrupt traditional software industry leaders. The company's quarterly results have served as a report card every three months on the competition. Design applications like those from Canva Inc. and image-creation tools from AI firm Midjourney Inc. have gained steam while Adobe has weaved generative AI tools through its products like Photoshop. In February, it introduced separate subscriptions for its AI video generator, trying to compete with similar tools from rivals including OpenAI and Runway. 'Somehow Adobe has been snagged as an AI loser,' said Gil Luria, an analyst at DA Davidson, in an interview on Bloomberg TV. 'We think that's a misunderstanding of the technology,' he added. Adobe's family of AI models, called Firefly, has been used to generate more than 24 billion pieces of content, Chief Financial Officer Dan Durn said in remarks prepared for a conference call after the results. That's up from 20 billion in March. Adobe had said then that it expected $250 million in annual recurring revenue from AI products. The shares were little changed in extended trading after closing at $413.68 in New York. The stock has dropped 7% this year. Fiscal second-quarter revenue increased 11% to $5.87 billion, compared with an average analyst estimate of $5.8 billion. Profit, excluding some items, was $5.06 per share, while Wall Street anticipated $4.98. The digital media unit, which includes Adobe's flagship creative and document-processing software, posted an 11% increase in sales to $4.35 billion. Annual recurring revenue for the closely watched segment was $18.1 billion, in line with estimates. Revenue from the unit that includes marketing and analytics software rose 10% to $1.46 billion. 'Adobe's AI innovation is transforming industries enabling individuals and enterprises to achieve unprecedented levels of creativity,' Adobe Chief Executive Shantanu Narayen said in the statement. Donald Trump to set unilateral tariff rates for trading partners within two weeks, ‘Can take it or leave it'

United States President Donald Trump on June 11 said he intends to send letters to trading partners within the next week or two setting unilateral tariff rates, according to a Bloomberg report. The move will come ahead of a July 9 deadline to reimpose higher duties on severeal countries, it added. Speaking to reporters, Donald Trump said, 'At a certain point, we're just going to send letters out. And I think you understand that, saying this is the deal, you can take it or leave it.' When reporters questioned if countries would get more time to make trade deals before the higher tariffs start, the US president said he would be open to it, but 'But I don't think we're gonna have that necessity'. While Donald Trump had initially said he would engage in talks with each country, the US strategy has since moved towards prioritising key economic partners with the administration acknowledging that it lacks the capacity to negotiate dozens of individual deals, the report said. While deals with China and the United Kingdom have had extensive discussions and 'near' completion, Trump's team is working to secure bilateral deals with India, Japan, South Korea and the European Union. Also speaking to reporters on June 11, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that a deal with the EU is likely to be among the last to be completed, expressing frustration with conducting talks with a 27-nation bloc. At present it is unclear if Donald Trump will follow through with his intent as he has often set two-week deadlines only for dates to be postponed or for the matter to be dropped, the report noted. Notably, on May 29, a reporter invited Donald Trump ire by asking his opinion on Wall Street dubbing his tariffs plan as TACO i.e. Trump Always Chickens Out — mocking the US president's frequent tariff impositions and subsequent reductions, followed by waivers. A visibly offended Donald Trump went on a defensive rant: 'Don't ever say what you said. To me, that's the nastiest question.' In April, the US president announced higher tariffs for dozens of trading partners, and then paused action for 90 days. Then, on May 16, Donald Trump said he would be setting tariff rates for US trading partners 'over the next two to three weeks'. Till date (June 11 last), the only trade framework the US has reached is with the UK, along with a shaky tariff truce with China. First coined by The Financial Times' Robert Armstrong, the term 'TACO' has been picked up for use by Wall Street traders, who see large sell-offs each time Donald Trump's tariffs are announced, followed by recovery when the demand is cut down or removed.
