Urban waste: Sindh adopts aggressive recycling strategy
SSWMB Managing Director Tariq Ali Nizamani, speaking as the keynote speaker at the Annual Environment Conference-2025 organised by the National Forum for Environment & Health (NFEH), said this effort had already seen the establishment of three waste recycling, compost and biofuel production plants in Karachi, while the fourth one — a plastic recycling facility began operating in Hyderabad on 1 August 2025.
He said that approximately 14,000 tonnes of municipal waste generated in Karachi and 1,1000 tonnes produced in Hyderabad daily were a massive challenge for SSWMB, whose disposal should take place through such sustainable means. These strategies will be deployed to make Sindh clean and green, said the SSWMB chief.
The Hyderabad's new recycling plant processes 25 tonnes of inferior-quality polyethylene waste daily, converting it into high-strength, eco-friendly manhole covers. Each 50-kilogramme cover can withstand up to 18 tonnes of pressure, replacing metallic covers that are often stolen, causing fatal accidents.
He added that the World Bank-backed facility would employ around 80 people formerly working in the informal sector. Alongside plastic recycling, the SSWMB would conduct training workshops to educate citizens on converting daily kitchen waste into compost to enhance green cover in their neighbourhoods.
Highlighting SSWMB's ongoing sustainability initiatives, Nizamani informed the audience that more than half of Sindh's urban waste comprises organic and recyclable materials that can be repurposed, substantially reducing pressure on landfill sites.
The conference, themed 'Environment, Climate Change, Corporate Leadership – Towards a Sustainable Pakistan' also featured speeches emphasising the need for provincial autonomy to effectively address environmental degradation and climate change.

Digital Economy Enhancement Project: MoUs between MoITT, provincial govts still pending: World Bank
ISLAMABAD: The World Bank has pointed out that the memorandum of understandings (MoUs) between the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT) and the provincial governments, as laid down in the financing agreement of 'Digital Economy Enhancement Project' (DEEP) of $78 million, are still pending. Official documents of the Bank also stressed on stronger coordination among the project implementation entities and service providers in the federal and provincial governments for on-boarding of provincial and local government services. The project has made good progress in implementation status and results report (ISR) period. The three designated accounts have been opened, disbursements have begun, project staff has been recruited, and procurement processes for key consultancies and IT infrastructure are under way. The establishment of the national data exchange layer and digital identification ecosystem has been affirmed as a priority for the federal government. However, stronger coordination is needed among the project implementation entities and service providers in the federal and provincial governments for on-boarding of provincial and local government services. The MoUs between the MoITT and the provincial governments, as laid down in the Financing Agreement, are still pending. The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication in collaboration with the World Bank is implementing DEEP. The main objective of the programme is 'to enhance the government's capacity for digitally enabled public services delivery for citizens and businesses.' The DEEP proposes a whole of government approach to develop the framework and technology that will increase access to and promote the use of digital services across Pakistan. The project will develop Pakistan Digital Government Enterprise Architecture, which will create a government ecosystem transcending existing processes, including by mapping roles and responsibilities and setting key principles across technology, business, information, and service design. This digitalisation will not only provide ease to citizens and businesses but would also enable higher degree of transparency, lower the cost of processing, and increase the tax collection capabilities of the federal and provincial governments, which is one of the priority focus areas of the government. World Bank approves $650 million Istanbul Resilience Project
The World Bank said on Friday it had approved a $650 million loan to support the Istanbul Resilience Project, an investment to strengthen the city's emergency preparedness and response capacities for disasters and climate risks. Focused on protecting lives, livelihoods and economic activity in Turkiye's largest city, the project aims to improve Istanbul's resilience, the World Bank said in a statement.

Petroleum (Amendment) Bill, 2025 considered in detail
ISLAMABAD: The meeting of the Standing Committee on Petroleum Division of the National Assembly was held here on Friday under the chairmanship of Syed Mustafa Mehmood. The chairman attended the meeting from abroad and, after commencing the proceedings, sought permission to leave. Subsequently, the committee, unanimously, elected Syed Naveed Qamar, to preside over the remainder of the meeting under rule-216 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly, 2007. At the outset, the committee confirmed the minutes of its previous meeting held on 22nd May 2025 and extended a warm welcome to the federal minister for Petroleum Division, members of the committee, and officials from various divisions, and departments for their participation. The committee then considered in detail the Petroleum (Amendment) Bill, 2025 (Government Bill) and recommended its passage by the National Assembly with amendments. The sub-committee was constituted under the convener-ship of Syed Naveed Qamar submitted its report to the main Standing Committee, which adopted it and recommended that its proposals be forwarded to the Petroleum Division for further necessary action. The Sub-Committee comprised Syed Naveed Qamar, Asad Alam Niazi, Muhammad Moin Aamer Pirzada and Gul Asghar Khan. Its Terms of Reference were to discuss and formulate new guidelines for the efficient utilisation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds, Production Bonuses, and Training Funds for capacity-building, with the objective of ensuring transparency and providing relief to local communities. The meeting was attended by members of the National Assembly, including Anwarul Haq Chaudhary, Shaista Khan, Syed Naveed Qamar, Asad Alam Niazi, Salahuddin Junejo, Shahid Ahmad, and Shazia Marri (as Special Invitee). Senior officials present included Momin Agha, secretary Petroleum Division; Mahfooz Bhatti, additional secretary (Power Division); Jam Muhammad Aslam, additional draftsman/joint secretary Ministry of Law and Justice along with other senior officials.
