Benjamin Sesko: Newcastle bid £70m for Manchester United target
Newcastle United have submitted a £70million offer to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. Sesko, 22, is also a target for Manchester United this summer, but Newcastle have made the first concrete move for the Slovenia striker. Their offer is worth €75million, with potential add-ons taking it to €80million (about £70million), which matches the lower end of Leipzig's valuation of the player. He was not in the squad for the German club's pre-season friendly against Atalanta on Saturday. Newcastle's pursuit of Sesko comes amid uncertainty over the future of Alexander Isak, their star striker. Liverpool offered £110million for Isak on Friday but that was rejected and, as things stand, they are not expected to come forward with an improved bid. 'It is difficult because you don't know what is going to happen,' Eddie Howe, the Newcastle manager, said from the club's pre-season tour in the Far East. 'There can be all sorts of talk and hypothetical situations, but then you are dealing with reality. 'The reality is we had the first bid from Liverpool yesterday. I believe that was turned down, from this point onwards let's see what happens. I have no idea to try to predict that. I really don't know what happens next. From our perspective, we still support Alex in every way, and my wish is that we see him in a Newcastle shirt again.' Asked if he knew Isak had been training alone at his former club, Real Sociedad, in Spain this week, Howe said: 'I know where is now — through the media. So I think from that perspective, it is difficult to go into any type of detail.' Isak is expected back in Newcastle this weekend. Manchester United may yet match Newcastle's offer, as Sesko is their priority this month, and the Old Trafford club will not have to wait to make further sales before completing a deal for a new striker despite a tight financial situation. Sales would no doubt help the club, but sources have indicated that despite things being tight another incoming player is not dependent on more exits. United's figures have been helped by Marcus Rashford's loan move to Barcelona, which moved his £350,000-a-week wages off the books, and the club have worked to reduce the wage bill this year with loan exits in the second half of last season. They have also benefited from some small sell-on fees for Anthony Elanga, Álvaro Carreras and Maxi Oyedele, which total about £15million. Nearly £130million has been spent on Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, but the structure of those deals, to be paid in instalments, means there is still room in the budget to make more signings, however it will be tight and United are adamant they are not in a position to be driven up on prices. Alejandro Garnacho is another possible source of profit, with Chelsea retaining an interest in the winger, while Saudi clubs are also keen on Tyrell Malacia and United remain hopeful of selling Antony and Jadon Sancho before the window closes. Those four players are the remaining members of the 'bomb squad' who were left behind as United travelled to America for their pre-season tour. There are no plans to reintegrate them once the group returns to Manchester on Monday. Amorim does not plan to reintegrate Garnacho into his squad once they return from the pre-season tour in the US OLI SCARFF / AFP It is understood they will still be able to use all of the facilities at Carrington, including the first-team dressing room, and there are no plans to banish them out of the first-team building. However, they will remain on different schedules to Amorim's group as they prepare for their opening Premier League game against Arsenal.

Lions lock ‘up and talking' after horror injury during third Australia Test
James Ryan, the British and Irish Lions lock, was stretchered off during the third Test against the Wallabies in Sydney on Saturday. The injury occurred early in the second half when Ryan's head collided with the knee of Australia's Will Skelton. Lions coach Andy Farrell provided an encouraging update, confirming Ryan was 'up and talking' and 'going to be fine'. Ryan was not taken to hospital, despite initially appearing to be knocked out on the pitch. The Lions lost the match 22-12, denying them the series clean sweep they were coveting.
