CNC demands indigenous status for the community

Time of India2 days ago
Madikeri: The Codava National Council (CNC) organised a peaceful satyagraha in front of the DC office in Madikeri, demanding indigenous status for the Kodava tribe.
The silent protest was organised as part of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, observed annually on Aug 9.
Adorning traditional attire, CNC members gathered in front of the DC office to demand various rights for the Kodava community.
Speaking after the protest, CNC president NU Nachappa said, "The peaceful satyagraha is being organised continuously to draw the govt's attention to attain indigenous status for the Kodava tribe, who are deprived of their constitutional rights. Kodavas belong to the indigenous tribal community, the original inhabitants of this sacred Kodava land.
Our historical continuity in this soil should be legally recognised.
The Kodava habitat, Kodavaland, ancestral ancient lands, political-cultural rights, folk identity, sacred groves, and the sacred pilgrimage site of the Talacauvery should be constitutionally protected by the World Organisation under the rights of indigenous peoples as per international law."
He demanded various rights for the community, including protection of Kodava land and ancestral sites, exemptions from Arms Act, inclusion of Kodava language under the 8th schedule of the Constitution, introduction of the Kodava language in the curriculum and administration, inclusion of Kodava folk culture in the Unesco list of intangible cultural heritage, and SC tag for the community. Several other resolutions, including war memorials at Nalknad Palace and Madikeri Fort, were taken at the event.
A memorandum addressed to the secretary general of the Unesco was handed over to the district administration.

Bengal Cabinet gives nod to build ‘Durga Angan' on lines of Digha's Jagannath Dham

The West Bengal Cabinet on Monday gave the go-ahead to the proposal of building 'Durga Angan', a courtyard dedicated to goddess Durga, on the lines of the Jagannath temple which was inaugurated in the state's coastal town of Digha on April 30. The decision was taken in a Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at Nabanna, the state secretariat. Cabinet ministers Aroop Biswas and Firhad Hakim said the state Tourism and Finance departments will jointly build the temple dedicated to the state's most revered deity. It, however, has not been decided yet as to where the structure will come up, it is learnt. Addressing a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, minister Biswas said, 'A trust will be formed. Our CM does what she says, unlike others.' 'UNESCO awarded our Durga Puja with the 'intangible heritage tag'. To show respect to UNESCO's recognition, our CM had proposed setting up Durga Angan, and today the Cabinet gave its nod. There will be a Trust formed. The HIDCO and tourism department will work in tandem with the Trust,' Biswas said. He said the land for the Durga Angan would be provided by the state government, and the budget for the same would be decided later. 'The Cabinet also okayed establishing two plants of 800 x 2 megawatt in Salboni (in Paschim Medinipur district), which will help in fulfilling the increasing power demand,' Biswas said. The Cabinet also approved a major relaxation in home construction rules. Firhad Hakim, who holds the Urban and Municipal Affairs portfolio, said construction regulations would now allow building homes even on small plots of land. He said that previously, construction on small plots was not permitted due to regulatory restrictions. 'In a major policy shift, permissions will now be granted to build homes on plots as small as 500 square feet,' Hakim said. 'There will be no minimum plot size requirement. If the applicant meets other eligibility criteria, approval will be granted,' he said. Hakim also clarified that the relaxations would vary based on the size of the plot. 'While fire safety norms applicable to larger plots will still be enforced, the same may not apply to smaller ones,' he said, further emphasising the size of the road adjacent to the plot will be a critical factor in granting construction clearance. The entire application and approval process will now be conducted online, Hakim informed. 'Once the online application is submitted, the applicant can go ahead with foundational work. During this time, municipal authorities will conduct all necessary inspections and surveys. The government aims to complete the entire approval process within just 15 days,' he said. The Cabinet has approved the recruitment of 627 personnel across various state departments, both permanent and contractual positions, official sources said. They said the Judicial Department will see the addition of 22 new positions, while the Health Department will establish 122 new posts specifically for the SSKM Hospital. In addition to the permanent roles, the Health Department will also hire 464 contractual staff under the 'E-Mobile Medical Unit' programme. These positions will include attendants and drivers, aimed at enhancing mobile healthcare services across the state. Cabinet clears plan for permanent Durga temple complex in West Bengal

KOLKATA: Goddess Durga, among the most revered deities in Bengal, will get a permanent temple complex — Durga Angan — where she can be worshipped round the year. The Bengal cabinet, chaired by CM Mamata Banerjee , has given its nod to the proposal and tasked the tourism dept and Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco) to identify a plot and build it. According to tentative plans, hunt for a plot near Kolkata has already begun. 'Unesco has recognised Bengal's Durga Puja as a heritage. In honour of this, the CM has announced the creation of Durga Angan. Hidco and tourism dept will jointly work towards building it. This will be one place where Ma Durga will be worshipped all year round,' power, housing and sports minister Aroop Biswas said after the cabinet meet on Monday. 'The first step will be to ask the state to allot the required land. The budget is yet to be discussed and the exact plan will be worked out now that the necessary approval has come through,' he said. A trust will be established to manage the temple complex and names of the trust members will be announced later, Biswas said., and added that this will be a tourist attraction similar to the Jagannath temple in Digha. The Jagannath temple complex in Digha, built by Hidco, is also run by a trust. The complex is expected to resemble an open-air museum that will also depict the culture and heritage of Durga Puja. 'Durga Aangan is likely to be a place where anyone can experience the essence of Durga Puja, not merely the religious aspect of it, but also its cultural socio-economic importance,' a senior party functionary said. CM Banerjee had announced a permanent Durga temple from the July 21 Martyrs' Day rally. 'You (BJP) say I don't allow Durga Puja and Saraswati Puja. And now all of a sudden, you have remembered Maa Durga and Maa Kali. Maa Durga is our state and the nation's asset. Durga Puja is a cultural treasure of our country. This festival has been inscribed on Unesco's list of intangible cultural heritage. Just like I built Jagannath Dham, I will build a Durga Aangan in Bengal, where people can visit and experience the colour and essence of Durga Puja throughout the year,' she had said. The announcement had led several political commentators to say that the Trinamool chief was invoking Bengal's most revered deity to cushion BJP's Hindutva politics and drive home the Bengali ethos and culture. Bengal Cabinet okays Mamatas Durga Angan proposal

Kolkata, Aug 11 (PTI) The West Bengal Cabinet on Monday gave its nod to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's proposal to set up a 'Durga Angan", a courtyard dedicated to goddess Durga, Power Minister Arup Biswas said. A Trust would be formed, and the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) and the state tourism department would work in tandem to execute the project, he said. 'UNESCO awarded our Durga Puja with the 'intangible heritage tag'. To show respect to UNESCO's recognition, our CM had proposed setting up Durga Angan, and today the Cabinet gave its nod. 'While fire safety norms applicable to larger plots will still be enforced, the same may not apply to smaller ones," he said, further emphasising that the size of the road adjacent to the plot will be a critical factor in granting construction clearance.
