Details of the case and charges
Nasir
Ahmad Tawhedi
, 27, pleaded guilty on June 13 to two counts: conspiracy to provide material support to ISIS and attempting to acquire firearms to commit a federal terrorism offense.
The U.S. government classifies ISIS as a foreign terrorist organization.
Live Events
Court documents reveal that Tawhedi, who arrived in the U.S. on September 1, 2021, under a special immigration program shortly after the
Taliban
took control of Kabul, had been living in Oklahoma when he sought to obtain
AK-47-style rifles
and approximately 500 rounds of ammunition. His intent was to target large groups of people during the 2024 U.S. election, aiming to inflict mass casualties and disrupt the democratic process.
Authorities disclosed that Tawhedi collaborated with several individuals, including his father-in-law Abdullah H. Zada, who was charged as an adult and pleaded guilty in April 2025. Zada faces up to 15 years in prison for his role in the conspiracy.
Investigation and arrest
The
FBI
monitored Tawhedi for over a month before his arrest, during which he was employed as a rideshare driver and worked in automotive repair shops. The agency's investigation uncovered his efforts to acquire weapons and plan the attack.
FBI Director Kash Patel praised the investigation, stating, 'The defendant admits he planned and obtained firearms to carry out a violent terror attack on Election Day in 2024, a plot that was detected and disrupted through the good work of the FBI and our partners.'
At the time of his arrest on October 7, 2024, Tawhedi was on parole pending a decision on his immigration status, which has since been revoked.
Motivations and court statements
During the court proceedings, Tawhedi admitted that his motivation stemmed from retaliation against U.S. involvement in conflicts abroad, specifically citing the war in
Gaza
. Though he did not formally apologize, he acknowledged knowing that his actions were wrong. Through an interpreter, he expressed that he had been opposed to violence for much of his life but became disillusioned, which influenced his worldview and led to his involvement in the plot.
He explicitly stated that the plan was intended to kill Americans and disrupt the U.S. electoral process, underscoring the seriousness of the threat.

‘Politically motivated': Minnesota lawmakers Melissa Hortman, John Hoffman killed in fake cop attack; statewide manhunt underway
Two Minnesota lawmakers were shot in their homes early Saturday in what authorities are calling a 'politically motivated' attack by a suspect who may have posed as a law enforcement officer. A statewide manhunt is underway. Governor Tim Walz confirmed that former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in the attack. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot, with Hoffman reportedly wounded. The shootings occurred in separate residences in districts located north of Minneapolis. 'This was a targeted, politically motivated shooting,' Gov. Walz said. Authorities are still investigating the attacker's motive and identity, but a source familiar with the case told The Associated Press that the suspect may have impersonated a police officer to gain access to the victims' homes. Law enforcement agencies are in the early stages of what is being described as a complex investigation. The shootings have shocked Minnesota's political community and come at a time when elected officials across the US are facing growing threats and harassment amid heightened political tensions. John Hoffman, a Democrat first elected to the state Senate in 2012, is also a consultant and former vice chair of the Anoka-Hennepin School Board. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Biwas: Scholarships You Can Apply For (Start Now) College Scholarship | Google Search Search Now Undo He lives with his wife and daughter. She had recently taken on a leadership role in the state Legislature. The gun violence prevention organisation GIFFORDS, founded by former US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, issued a strong statement condemning the shootings. 'I am horrified and heartbroken by last night's attack on two patriotic public servants,' Giffords said. 'An attack against lawmakers is an attack on American democracy itself.' Giffords survived a 2011 assassination attempt that killed six people and injured 12 others during a public event in Arizona. She stepped down from Congress the following year to focus on recovery and advocacy work. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as the manhunt continues for the suspect behind Saturday's deadly assault.

Bar bodies urge Pakistan SC to revisit May 7 judgment on military trials of civilians
Islamabad: The Lahore High Court Bar Association and Lahore Bar Association have asked the Supreme Court to revisit and set aside the May 7 judgment on military trials of civilians , a media report said on Saturday. The two separate petitions filed on Friday are the second set of such challenges following an earlier petition submitted by former chief justice of Pakistan Jawwad S Khawaja , the Dawn newspaper reported. In his petition, the former CJP highlighted that if not overturned, the May 7 verdict will serve as a constant reminder of ceding judicial space to the executive by accepting that it can act as judges to try civilians in criminal cases. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Kulkas yang belum Terjual dengan Harga Termurah (Lihat harga) Cari Sekarang Undo On May 7, a five-judge Cons-ti-tu-tion Bench of the Supreme Court (SC) had restored key provisions of the Pakistan Army Act that allow the trial of civilians in military courts. The court ruled by a 5-2 majority in favour of overturning its earlier decision from October 23, 2023, in which the earlier five-judge SC bench had held the military trial of civilians as illegal and unconstitutional. Live Events Riots broke out on May 9, 2023, as supporters of jailed former premier Imran Khan had allegedly vandalised public property and attacked defence installations in the country as they protested the arrest of the 72-year-old party founder. The review petitions urged that the May 7 judgment was passed in contravention of the Constitution and laws of Pakistan. Last month, a Pakistani court sentenced 11 supporters of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), including a lawmaker, for violent protest in the capital on May 9, 2023. Those convicted included member of the National Assembly Abdul Latif, who was elected from Chitral area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Earlier, in December 2024, military courts had sentenced 85 civilians to prison terms ranging from two to 10 years for their involvement in violent attacks on military installations during the riots on May 9, 2023. Khan has been in jail since August 2023 in multiple cases.
