Sanjay Roy, a former police civic volunteer, was found guilty in the case and was awarded life imprisonment till death.
Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape case has taken a new turn with the victim's father expressing strong dissatisfaction with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), pointing out inconsistencies in their investigative reports.
A postgraduate trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024. Sanjay Roy, a former police civic volunteer, was found guilty and was awarded life imprisonment till death.
On Tuesday, the father of the victim who was brutally raped and murdered claimed that her mobile number was used after her death, pointing out inconsistencies in the investigative reports of the CBI.
'CBI has presented two drastically different reports in the Calcutta High Court and the Sealdah district Court. We will tell the High Court today that two different status reports are being presented. Even Supreme Court judges could not believe the gravity of the report submitted to them. We had faith in the CBI, but now we are losing all hope," news agency ANI reported.

The victim's father claimed that her mobile phone, which is reportedly in CBI's custody, was accessed to leave a common WhatsApp group. He alleged that the CBI knows the identities of those involved in his daughter's rape and murder but is withholding key information.
'CBI knows the perpetrators behind the rape and murder of my daughter but it is not revealing the details…," he added.
Following the Calcutta High Court's disapproval of the local police investigation, the case was reassigned to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Subsequently, the CBI apprehended multiple suspects, including the primary accused, Sanjay Roy, who received a conviction for the offence.
Roy was arrested on August 10, a day after the 31-year-old medic's body was found in the seminar room of the hospital. He was declared guilty of sexually assaulting the doctor and throttling her to death, and was convicted under Sections 64, 66 and 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The Supreme Court conducted proceedings in a suo motu case regarding the assault and murder of the trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The victim's parents received legal representation from Senior Advocate Karuna Nundy.

Two mules in digital arrest case caught, police recover ₹10 lakh of ₹4.7 crore
Following the digital arrest case of a 75-year-old retired engineer, the South-East cyber crime police arrested two men, including an industrialist from Hyderabad, who allegedly received the money in their bank accounts. The police also exposed the link of a casino in Sri Lanka to the cyber fraud which is being probed in detail. The accused according to the police trapped the victim, posing as CBI and ED officials, and threatened to book him for money laundering three months ago, and forced him to pay ₹4.7 crore over a period of time. The accused even forced him to share property documents which they tried to use as collateral to get personal loans. The police, based on a tip-off from their Chennai counterparts, approached the victim, who was not aware of the scam and was transferring the money to different accounts. He had recently transferred ₹10 lakh to the account belonging to the driver of Ishwar Singh, a Hyderabad-based businessman. Based on the information, a police team tracked down Ishwar Singh who confessed that he had gone to Sri Lanka to gamble in the casino with ₹25 lakh. After losing ₹15 lakh, he returned to Hyderabad and asked for a refund for the rest of the money from the accused in the casino. The accused asked the victim posing as CBI officials to transfer the money to Ishwar. 'He was unaware that the money he received is part of a cyber crime,' a police officer said, adding that the money has been seized and returned to the victim. Meanwhile, the police also detained Ramnarayana Choudhary, an industrialist from Hyderabad, whose account the accused had used to transfer the money. The police found that Choudhary received ₹1.8 crore in his account which was later transferred to different accounts in Guntur and Vishakhapatnam. The police said that both Choudhary and Singh were unaware that the money they had received in their accounts belonged to cyber crime. The police have warned people not to share their bank accounts with anyone, while a probe is on to track down the accused and expose the links of cyber frauds and casino in Sri Lanka, said Sarah Fathima, DCP (South-East division).

Plea in HC against Jayanth house razing
1 2 Kolkata: A petitioner, claiming to be a resident of an illegal four-storey house at Ariadaha under the Kamarhati Municipality, on Tuesday challenged the demolition notice served by the civic body, as directed by the Calcutta High Court. The house in question is White House, owned by Jayanth Singh, prime suspect in a mob violence case. The petitioner, Prasant Singh, in his application before the division bench of Justice Rajasekhar Mantha and Justice Ajay Kumar Gupta, pleaded that the Kamarhati Municipality didn't serve him a notice to vacate the building, where he was a resident. Singh's counsel said the municipality served the notice to Jayanth, mentioning June 15 as the demolition date. The counsel said Prasant was a resident of that house and the municipality didn't serve him a notice. when Sec 218 of West Bengal Municipal Act provided for a notice. HC gave a chance to Prasant for a hearing, provided he proved he was a genuine resident of the house.
