Chilling new claim about what happened before alleged beheading horror in Melbourne: 'That's what spun me out'

Daily Mail3 days ago
Friends of a couple killed in a horrific double murder say the male victim may have been involved in a dispute with the alleged killer over the sale and ownership of dogs.
Ross Judd, 34, is alleged to have killed pregnant woman Athena Georgopoulos, 39, and decapitated her partner Andrew Gunn, 50, before putting the father-to-be's head on a spike.
Their bodies were found by a neighbour at a residence on Adrienne Crescent in Mount Waverley, Melbourne about 9.55pm on Monday.
Judd was arrested at Westall train station in the city's south-east about 1.40am on Tuesday.
Just a few hours earlier, shortly after 11pm, diners claimed to have seen a man matching his description walk into a McDonald's on Dandenong Rd in Clayton with two large German shepherds, who waited patiently at the door.
It has now been suggested Judd and Mr Gunn may have entered a dispute over the ownership and sale of some dogs at the time of the murder.
Friends of Mr Gunn told the Herald Sun he was often seen with his beloved German shepherd, Dragon.
Elise Browne said Dragon was 'very protective' of Mr Gunn, adding: 'Morph was always with his dog.'
'That's what spun me out when I heard about (the deaths), because he and his dog went everywhere together and Dragon wouldn't let anyone near him,' she said.
Pictures shared of Judd's dogs and their distinctives scarves at McDonald's prompted some people to comment they had seen the well-behaved dogs and the man around the area previously.
A neighbour of the couple, who claimed to have heard arguing and barking dogs on the night of the alleged murders, spoke out on Wednesday.
'No one should have to come across what I saw down there,' said Ben Scott-Sandvik, who lives at the front unit in Mount Waverley block where the alleged double-murders took place.
He told the Herald Sun 'nobody needs to live knowing that this sort of thing has happened to their families'.
Judd appeared at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, winking after he tripped as he walked to the dock.
He then smiled throughout the brief filing hearing over the two counts of murder.
The prosecution asked the court for a ten-week extension because 'it's a complex crime scene with significant amounts of DNA evidence'.
The prosecutor also said autopsies were expected to be delayed, as alleged murder victim Athena Georgopoulos, 39, was five months pregnant when she died.
Daily Mail has previously revealed Ms Georgopoulos was set to face a plea hearing at Ringwood Magistrates' Court on September 1 for car theft and burglary charges.
The alleged killer's legal aid lawyer did not oppose the unusually lengthy period to serve the brief, but told the court it was her client's first time in custody.
Judd also faces charges regarding previous allegations of making threats, the Daily Mail can also reveal.
The lawyer also said Judd needed to see the custody nurse for 'follow-up medication and physical health issues'.
Ms Georgopoulos was allegedly killed alongside Mr Gunn in what police believe was a targeted attack at their Mount Waverley home, in Melbourne's south-east.
On Wednesday, her mother Petty Georgopoulos paid tribute to her daughter in a heartbreaking post on social media.
'My little heart, you left life so unfairly that I still cannot believe it,' she said in the touching Facebook post.
'In recent days you were so happy - we made dreams together for our little granddaughter that you were going to bring into your life.
'And suddenly, everything was erased in one night, when an [alleged] murderer cut the thread of your life and of my little granddaughter's life that you were going to bring into the world in four months.
'No matter how much they separated us, I will never stop loving you. Forever. Until we meet again, my little girl, in the light of the angels.'
Ms Georgopoulos worked as a customer service representative for several electricity and insurance companies, and had been Mr Gunn's partner for three years.
The couple were found dead after police received calls from neighbours on Monday night about yelling coming from the property, and heavily armed police swarmed the Adrienne Crescent home at 9.55pm.
Inside the small unit, officers allegedly found Mr Gunn's mutilated body next to the body of Ms Georgopoulos.
Judd was arrested with two large dogs just hours later at nearby Westall Railway Station, about 6km from the crime scene, at around 1.40am on Tuesday.
Police allege Judd was known to the couple and that one of the victims lived in the unit, but they are still trying to establish the connection and alleged motive.

British ‘victim of US rapist' has case dropped

A woman who claimed she was raped in Britain by American sex offender Nicholas Rossi has accused the Crown Prosecution Service of not doing its job after it refused to prosecute him. Rossi, 38, who faked his own death in 2020 and fled to Britain in order to avoid charges against him in the US, was convicted of rape in Utah this week. But the CPS has declined to prosecute over a former girlfriend's allegations he raped her at her home in Chelmsford, Essex, in 2017, saying there is insufficient evidence. The woman, named only as Michelle, began a relationship with Rossi in 2017 after meeting on an online dating app. 'We cannot prove rape' She said he claimed to be a Harvard-educated political lobbyist, and once they were in a relationship, he demanded she buy him an iPhone, give him money and never wear trousers. Rossi is accused of tracking her whereabouts and raping her in her own bedroom, after which she threw him out and reported him to the authorities. But after an Essex Police investigation, the CPS decided not to prosecute him. 'We cannot prove that [Rossi] was aware that you did not want to have sex with him at the point of penetration despite your earlier refusal and the fact that you were not actively participating in the intercourse,' Helen Walsh, the district crown prosecutor, wrote in a letter dated July 24, according to The Times. 'I appreciate that you will be very unhappy and distressed that this case could not proceed but I am grateful that you felt able to raise your concerns.' Rossi has denied the accusations. Michelle told the newspaper: 'I am very happy that Nicholas Rossi has been found guilty of rape in Utah, But I am shocked, distressed and angered that no action will be taken in my case in the UK. 'It feels to me like the CPS are blaming the victim rather than doing their job. The authorities in the US believed the woman, took action and secured a unanimous conviction despite similar amounts of evidence existing in both cases. 'I am deeply concerned for other rape survivors in England who are fighting for justice and are reliant on receiving support from the CPS.' Rapist trapped on Covid ward Rossi, originally from Rhode Island, was arrested in Glasgow in 2021 while receiving treatment for Covid-19 after hospital staff recognised his distinctive tattoos from an Interpol red notice. He insisted he was Arthur Knight, a disabled Englishman who was being framed for the crimes. But he was extradited after a Scottish court ruled he was Rossi and on Wednesday, he was found guilty by a court in Salt Lake County, Utah, of raping his former fiancée. He faces a maximum penalty of life in prison. A spokesman for the CPS said: 'Our prosecutors take the greatest care when examining allegations of rape – looking at the facts of each case in detail. 'After a careful review of all the materials in this case, we concluded there was not enough evidence to provide a realistic prospect of securing a conviction. 'A request to review this decision led to a second prosecutor reviewing the case, who reached the same conclusion, and we wrote to [Michelle] to explain our decision-making. 'We consistently charge around 7 in 10 of the rape cases passed to us by police, but we recognise there is more we can do in partnership with police to build the strongest possible cases from the outset.'

DAN HODGES: Palestine Action IS a terror group. But its liberal, middle-class backers think it's their right to defy the law

Deborah Hinton had been left in 'a state of trauma'. 'I was shaking uncontrollably,' the 81-year-old former magistrate explained as she reclined in her stylish armchair in her home in Gorran Haven, Cornwall. The police who had arrested her had the temerity to confiscate 'my handbag, my watch, and I was also wearing my miniature OBE, and they took that too', she recalled. Ms Hinton's only crime? Well, it was actually quite a serious one. She was arrested for supporting a proscribed terrorist organisation, an offence which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. As she would have been aware, given she's also a former member of the National Parole Board.

Murder hunt launched after woman in her 20s is found dead near care home

A murder hunt has been launched after a woman in her twenties was found dead near a care home. The horrifying attack happened early on Saturday morning on Chadwell Heath Lane in the Romford area of east London. Metropolitan Police officers were called at 5.34am to reports of an assault and helped the woman along with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service. But she was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The brutal stabbing took place in a residential area just down the road from Chadwell House Residential Care Home, which provides residential, dementia and respite care. No arrests have yet been made as the investigation is only at its early stages - but police are appealing for witnesses and information as it continues. The young woman has yet to be formally identified but it is believed she was in her twenties. A post-mortem will soon be carried out. Her family have been told and are being supported by specialist family liaison officers. Pictures of the scene show parts of nearby park Little Heath have been cordoned off with police tape, with a white evidence tent up while officers investigate. Officers in hazmat suits appear to be examining a vehicle with large clear plastic bags of unknown items in them. Detective Superintendent Brian Hobbs said: 'Our thoughts today are with the victim's family and friends in light of this truly tragic event. 'Local residents will see an increased number of officers in and around the area while our investigative work is carried out. 'I want to thank residents for their patience while this continues. 'I would ask anyone who was in the area of Romford, who may have seen or heard anything suspicious, to come forward to us.' Anyone who saw anything or has information has been asked to contact the police by calling 101, quoting 1625/16Aug. They can alternatively call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to remain anonymous.
