Palestine Action protesters arrested in Cardiff released on bail
The 13 people arrested during a protest against Palestine Action being designated a proscribed terror group in Cardiff have been released on bail. The individuals were held on suspicion of supporting a proscribed organisation under Section 12 of the Terrorism Act at the protest in the vicinity of Central Square on Saturday, South Wales Police (SWP) said. They were among more than 70 people arrested at Palestine Action protests across England and Wales on the same day. BREAKING IN CARDIFF (Caerdydd) – Police are moving in on a group of 13 people who are sat outside the BBC Cymru HQ. The group are holding signs with 'I OPPOSE GENOCIDE – I SUPPORT PALESTINE ACTION' written on them. 46 arrests have already taken place in London for the same act. — Defend our Juries (@DefendourJuries) July 12, 2025 Protesters sat outside the BBC Cymru HQ and held signs that read 'I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action', according to campaign group Defend Our Juries, who organised the demonstration. In a statement on Sunday, the force confirmed that the individuals had been bailed but that an investigation into the incident, led by Counter Terrorism Policing Wales, was ongoing. They were detained for an initial 24-hour period in custody before a further maximum of 12 hours extension was granted on Sunday, SWP said. The terror group designation means that membership of, or support for, Palestine Action is a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison. The move to ban the organisation came after two Voyager aircraft were damaged at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire on June 20, an incident claimed by Palestine Action, which police said caused about £7 million worth of damage. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced plans to proscribe Palestine Action three days later, saying that the vandalism of the planes was 'disgraceful' and the group had a 'long history of unacceptable criminal damage'.

Jury finds airman not guilty of assault
An Air Force member accused of first-degree assault was found not guilty earlier this month in Carter County. Dametric McGrue, 29, of La Grange, North Carolina, has claimed self-defense since an incident occurred on Aug. 11, 2023. At the end of his trial, that claim was solidified as a jury spent 3 hours and 15 minutes to determine McGrue should be acquitted. Attorney Sebastian Joy, who represented McGrue, announced the acquittal on social media on July 3. According to a police report, McGrue said he shot the victim on South Hord Street in self-defense after the man entered the apartment uninvited. According to the apartment tenant and McGrue, McGrue and the victim had a shoving match before the shooting happened. McGrue's only criminal history was a speeding ticket prior to the incident. That remains the extent of his history now. Joy said Airman First Class McGrue was applauded for his service to the country and shook many hands on his way out the door. He remained active and in good standing with the Air Force throughout the nearly two-year process. (606) 326-2664 | asnyder@

He went to install a bed hoist but what he did next left pensioner devastated
A pensioner was left devastated after her precious jewellery was stolen by a man who had come to fit a disability aid in her house. Gabor-Tamas Szilaygi, 36, visited the 86-year-old's home in Blackburn to fit a hoist for her bed on November 5, 2024. But after completing the job, the woman checked her bedroom and noticed her gold and diamond watch was missing from her bedside drawer, along with her wedding ring and a gold and emerald ring, LancsLive reports. She went back to the front door and saw Szilaygi driving away in his van. She called the police and reported the theft, Preston Crown Court heard. He told them the items they were looking for were in a compartment in the dashboard, and officers found the stolen jewellery - valued at £10,000. Sign up to the MEN Court newsletter here Szilaygi was arrested and admitted he had stolen the jewellery as he was expecting a child with his partner and was under financial strain to provide for them. However he said he felt too guilty to pawn the items but too ashamed to return them to the owner. In a victim impact statement, the widow said: "He took advantage of my trust and my physical limitations to steal jewellery my late husband gave me. These items have a deeply personal meaning and losing them has shattered my heart. "He has not only stolen my valuables but tarnished my precious memories." She said she now feels anxious in her own home and has had to install security cameras. She added: "His actions have robbed me of my independence, my peace of mind and my emotional health. He has left me fearful, anxious, scared stressed and isolated in a way that will affect me for the rest of my life." Szilaygi, of Carlinghurst Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to theft and said he was deeply ashamed of what he had done. He said it was a spur of the moment decision to take the jewellery and one he regretted immediately. The court heard he has no previous convictions and has contributed to his life in the UK paying taxes and working to support his family. Join our Court and Crime WhatsApp group HERE Recorder Kevin Slack, sentencing, said: "Your victim was clearly a very vulnerable old lady. You gained access to her property and in breach of the trust placed in you, you stole items of great sentimental value." However he said he considered there is a real prospect of rehabilitation as the defendant is a man of previous good character. He said an immediate prison sentence would impact his partner and two-month-old baby. Recorder Slack handed down a sentence of two years suspended for two years with 20 days rehabilitation activities and 250 hours of unpaid work. He also ordered him to pay £150 costs and a victim surcharge. The jewellery has been returned to its owner.
