Anthony Joshua responds to Andre Ward callout with playful jibe
American star Ward, now 41, retired with a perfect record of 32-0 (16 KOs) in 2017, having held unified world titles at super-middleweight and light-heavyweight.
And having teased a comeback fight for the right payday in recent years, Ward has now turned his attention to Joshua.
Ward said in an Instagram video this week: 'One name that I've brought up before, that... when you say that name, I could see myself fighting him – present day today, if the business was right and everything was right on that front... Me and Anthony Joshua.
'That's a fight that I would take at Wembley Stadium. It's a dangerous fight for my legacy, it's a dangerous fight across the board, but that's a fight that would get me in the gym and get me in the mindset that I need to be in to go to war.'
And Joshua, 35, has noted Ward's callout, commenting on the American's Instagram post: 'Pay Day Pay Day ( Canelo voice )'.
The Briton was referencing Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, the reigning undisputed super-middleweight champion, who has taunted various prospective opponents over the years by saying they want the 'pay day' that comes with fighting him.
Ward is considered a modern great, but he would have to turn back the clock and reach a career-highest weight to box Joshua.
'AJ', since turning professional after winning Olympic gold in 2012, has exclusively fought at heavyweight. In that division, he is a former two-time world champion.
Most recently, however, Joshua failed to regain world-champion status, as he was knocked out by then-IBF champion Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in September.
AJ has since undergone elbow surgery, and his next fight date and opponent are unclear.
Ward retired in 2017 on the back of a stoppage win over Sergey Kovalev, having outpointed the Russian in each man's previous bout. With those victories, Ward won then retained the WBA, WBO and IBF light-heavyweight titles.

Cromie has served as the caddie for six-time PGA Tour winner Chris Kirk in the past. Kirk, however, fell short of qualifying for the BMW Championship at 51st in the FedExCup rankings - the top 50 advanced to this week's event. It could turn into a lucrative weekend for the stand-in caddie if Scheffler is in his usual imperious form... form that has earned Scott an eye-watering amount over the past few years. The American's regular wins have even seen Scott earn more than most players on the PGA Tour, as he takes home an estimated 10% of Scheffler's prize money. This season he has already banked $20.36m in tournament prize money, giving Scott just over $2m for himself. On top of that, Scheffler has another $23m in bonus money - but it is unclear how much commission his caddie is on when it comes to that.

August 13 - Brady Singer allowed three hits over six shutout innings while Miguel Andujar homered for the second time in three games to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a 6-1 win over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies Tuesday night. Spencer Steer doubled and drove in three runs and Jose Trevino went 2-for-4 and drove in two as the Reds won for the third time in four games, extending their MLB-best streak of not being swept this season to 39 series. With heavy rain falling, Bryce Harper launched a towering homer, his 18th, to the seats in right with two outs in the ninth to end the shutout bid. The Phillies had their four-game win streak snapped and lost for the first time in five tries on their 10-game, three-city road trip. For the second straight night, a Cincinnati starter retired the first 12 Philadelphia batters, as Singer was perfect through four innings, striking out five in the process. Like Monday night, the first batter of the fifth ended the run at perfection when Nick Castellanos hit a one-hopper that Elly De La Cruz played to the side and let carom off his glove for what was ruled a base hit. But Castellanos was erased on an inning-ending double play off the bat of Edmundo Sosa, as Singer faced the minimum of 15 batters through five. Unlike the night before with Andrew Abbott, the Reds provided a bit more offensive support, taking a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run double from Steer off Phillies starter Ranger Suarez (8-6), who took the loss. The Reds added another in the fourth when Miguel Andujar lined an 81mph slider from Suarez down the left field line and just inside the foul pole for his eighth homer of the season and second with the Reds after he was acquired from the Athletics at the trade deadline. Suarez was tagged for six runs on a season-high ten hits over 5 1/3 innings, suffering his fourth loss in six starts after starting the season 7-2. Singer (10-9) worked around a two-out single from Rafael Marchan followed with a double by Trea Turner in the sixth to preserve his run-free start. After the Reds put up three runs in the bottom of the sixth, the tarp was put on the infield just before thunder and rain rolled through the area. August 13 - Jose Ramirez hit two solo homers, including the go-ahead blast in the eighth inning off Calvin Faucher, as the Cleveland Guardians edged the visiting Miami Marlins 4-3 in their three-game series opener Tuesday night. The seven-time All-Star third baseman also went deep against Janson Junk in the first inning to break the franchise record with his 27th multi-homer game.
