CHAMP CHANGE Major change to Champions League to be introduced from next season following Arsenal heartbreak against PSG
UEFA are set to make a major change to the Champions League following Arsenal's heartbreak against Paris Saint-Germain.
The debut year of the new-look tournament unearthed a big problem some fans believed was unfair.

The top eight teams in the league phase automatically qualified for the Round of 16, with the next eight teams entering a play-off.
But that was the only advantage the top eight teams received - which will now change.
From next season the teams that finish in the top eight will have the advantage of playing the second leg of their knock-out ties at home.
That was a privilege not granted to Arsenal and Barcelona in the semi-finals last year - both teams finished in the top eight but lost to teams who finished below them in the league phase.

From next season, the teams who place highest in the league phase are guaranteed to play at home in the second leg.
The same change is expected to apply to both the Europa League and the Conference League.
Uefa agreed the change in a meeting ahead of the Champions League final on Saturday.
However the modification must be ratified by the Executive Committee, which does not meet until September.

A virtual meeting will have to take place to confirm the rule change before the league phase draw on August 28.
This season Arsenal played at home in the second leg of their Round of 16 win over PSV Eindhoven, before travelling to Real Madrid and PSG for the seconds legs of their quarter-final and semi-final ties.

Spain vs France TV channel and live stream: How to watch Nations League clash

Spain and France will lock horns tonight as both sides look to claim a place in the Nations League final. The reigning European Champions Spain are also the current holders of the Nations League, but face a tough task against France who won this competition back in 2021. Didier Deschamps' side is littered with youthful talent, with many, such as Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue, turning up for international duty just a matter of days after their Champions League triumph with Paris Saint-Germain. Both sides needed the help of penalties to come through their Nations League quarter-final clashes, with Spain overcoming the Netherlands and France edging past Croatia. The winner on Thursday will take on Portgual in the final after they won 2-1 against Germany on away soil. Ahead of kick-off in the Nations League semi-final, here's everything you need to know, including the team news, match odds and how to watch the game on TV and live stream in the UK. The Nations League semi-final kicks off at 8pm at the MHPArena in Stuttgart, with coverage starting at 7.45pm. Fans can watch Spain vs France live on Amazon Prime, with coverage of the game also available on pay-per-view for £2.49. Dean Huijsen could make a start for Spain after completing his move from Bournemouth to Real Madrid. However, the semi-final comes too soon for Rodri who made his return from a lengthy ACL layoff at the end of the Premier League season. Elsewhere in midfield, Isco could be in line for a start after his impressive form for Real Betis in what would mark his first international appearance since 2019. France, meanwhile, will have to manage the fitness of several PSG stars following their Champions League triumph last weekend. Deschamps will also have to rotate his back line, with Dayot Upamecano, William Saliba and Jules Kounde all absent through injury. Robinson 'would love' to bring Alebiosu back to St Mirren

Stephen Robinson is eager to bring full-back Ryan Alebiosu back to St Mirren for next season but admits "bigger offers" could scupper his 23-year-old Arsenal youth product joined during the winter transfer window on loan from Belgian side Kortrijk and played a big role as the Buddies secured a third successive top-six finish."I would love to bring him back," manager Robinson told BBC Scotland."He changed our whole dynamic in terms of the way we play and he was more like a winger, and it was the same with [Declan John], they gave us something different."Alebiosu and John arrived after a three-month period where Robinson was shorn of three first-team players as Shaun Rooney, Jaden Brown and Kevin van Veen all cut ties with the club amid off-field issues early in the season."The problem with that was we weren't able to replace them," the Northern Irishman added. "It was outside the transfer window so we had to wait until Christmas."Obviously it was circumstances no manager wants to deal with anyway, but not being able to replace them and enhance the squad was tough. But we got there."We thought Declan was a fantastic player, but he hadn't played for months so we knew that was going to take a long time to get him up to speed."Nobody wanted Ryan, nobody wanted to take a chance on him. He'd been at Kilmarnock and done okay. We tried to sign him when he was at Arsenal, but we didn't have the funds."I believe he's got bigger offers and bigger football clubs interested now unfortunately."

Ex-West Lothian footballer jailed after £600k drug smuggling plot

More info An ex-Arsenal academy footballer has been jailed for four years for his involvement in a £600,000 drug smuggling plot after a court heard his financial difficulties after a period out of contract led to a "catastrophic error of judgment". Jay Emmanuel-Thomas was arrested after officers from the National Crime Agency seized an estimated £600,000 of cannabis as it was being brought through Stansted Airport by two women he had recruited - his girlfriend and her friend. An earlier hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court in Essex was told the women believed they were importing gold. But Border Force officers detected roughly 60kg (132lb) of the drug in two suitcases, which had arrived in the UK from Bangkok, Thailand, via Dubai. The 34-year-old striker, of Cardwell Road in Gourock, Inverclyde, was arrested in the town in September 2024. He pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to fraudulent evasion of the prohibition on the importation of cannabis between July 1 2024 and September 2 2024. Emmanuel-Thomas was sacked by Scottish Championship side Greenock Morton after his arrest last year. Prosecutor David Josse KC told Chelmsford Crown Court the "interception" of the two women - Emmanuel-Thomas's girlfriend Yasmin Piotrowska and her friend Rosie Rowland - happened at the airport. He said it "became apparent this defendant, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, had been involved in their recruitment to travel to Thailand". He noted Emmanuel-Thomas "had played a few games, 11 in total, for a club in Thailand". The barrister said Emmanuel-Thomas had "some awareness and understanding of the scale of the operation" and was acting in an "operational management function" in the plot. He pointed out the defendant's "relationship with Ms Piotrowska" when describing the recruitment of the two women. The footballer, whose former clubs include Ipswich, Bristol City, QPR, Livingston, Aberdeen and Thai side PTT Rayong, was sentenced on Thursday. Ms Piotrowska sat in the public gallery and wept for much of the hearing. Alex Rose, for Emmanuel-Thomas, said: "The financial gain in this case for Mr Emmanuel-Thomas was £5,000." Mr Rose said the defendant was a father-of-two and had made a "catastrophic error of judgment". He said a "period of being out of contract led to very significant financial hard times" and he "succumbed to temptation". "Although he had previously experienced periods of being in between contracts or - putting it another way - being unemployed as a footballer, they had largely been on the back of fairly lucrative long-term contracts," said Mr Rose. He said the "situation was rather different in the background to this". "Having been out of contract prior to signing for Greenock Morton, he had a brief contract with Kidderminster Harriers but that was very much a short-term contract, almost to try to assist someone he had a good relationship with," he said. Mr Rose continued: "His football career is finished and that's something he has brought entirely on himself. "It's a devastating blow for somebody who had such promise and such an impressive football career." Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages. Judge Alexander Mills, jailing Emmanuel-Thomas for four years, said: "It's through your own action that you will no longer be known for playing professional football. "You will be known as a criminal. A professional footballer who threw it all away." The judge said Emmanuel-Thomas had played five games for Greenock Morton and was on a £600 per week contract at the time of the incident. He said the defendant "recruited" his girlfriend and her friend and was "essentially turning the importation of cannabis into an all-expenses paid holiday in the Far East", arranging business class flights, hotel costs and discussing in messages how to maximise their time on the Thai island of Ko Samui. Emmanuel-Thomas looked straight ahead as the judge read out his sentence. He nodded towards the public gallery as he was led to the cells. Ms Piotrowska, 33, of Purves Road, Kensal Rise, north-west London, and Ms Rowland, 29, of Southend Road, Chelmsford, Essex, denied the charge and at an earlier hearing prosecutors offered no evidence in their case. Mr Josse said at an earlier hearing that the women "said they thought they were importing gold not cannabis", and the judge directed that not guilty verdicts be recorded for them.
