Chicago Tribune28-05-2025
Oswego's Jaelynn Anthony timed her varsity breakout last season just about perfectly.
Anthony helped the Panthers make an historic run to taking third place in the state. But now, with the postseason beginning anew, the Purdue-bound junior pitcher is an established commodity.
It's a big difference.
'Everybody knows I'm a good pitcher, so they're here to beat me and it's not going to happen,' Anthony said. 'I do what I need to do. I'm here to compete and they know I'm here to compete.'
As far as competition goes, Anthony delivered a dominant performance Tuesday as top-seeded Oswego cruised to an 8-0 win over Metea Valley in a Class 4A Oswego East Regional semifinal.
Anthony was brilliant, striking out 17 and walking one in a three-hit gem for Oswego (32-2). She also hit a two-run homer, tying her with Aubriella Garza for the team lead with 13.
Adalynn Fugitt added two hits and two steals and scored twice for the Panthers, who extended their program record for wins and will play for a second straight regional title at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Garza and Sabrina Zamora each tallied two hits and drove in a run for the Panthers, while Zamora scored twice. Sydney Eakin, Maielle Ernser and Elena Gonzalez had hits for Metea (8-21).
Iowa recruit Kiyah Chavez, Anthony's catcher and one of her best friends, has seen the subtle ways that Anthony has improved and taken steps forward this season.
And they're not all related to her electric stuff.
'I think she just feels more confident, more comfortable,' Chavez said. 'There are so many things I could say about Jaelynn. She's obviously a fantastic pitcher and we're very lucky to have her.
'The strongest part of her development is definitely getting more comfortable with who she is and what role she plays. I think before she was a solid pitcher but she wasn't sure where she fit in with leadership roles, that kind of stuff.'
Oswego co-coach Annie Scaramuzzi echoed those sentiments, acknowledging that Anthony has made the jump from breakout pitcher last spring to savvy veteran this season.
'She just has the confidence this year to attack those hitters, which I think has been the difference-maker with her this year,' Scaramuzzi said.
Anthony puts fear into opponents with her bat, too. The Panthers were up only 1-0 after a sluggish start when Anthony came to the plate in the bottom of the third with one out and Garza on second.
'I was expecting a change-up,' Anthony said. 'All of our good hitters got first pitch change-ups. I'm not going to swing at a first pitch change-up.
'I saw an inside pitch and it was the best pitch I was going to get, so I took advantage of it and hit it hard.'
Anthony took care of the rest in the circle, striking out the side in the seventh to put the finishing touches on her win.
A year ago, Scaramuzzi would have been happy with advancing. After finishing third in the state and returning a ton of talent, though, the mindset has shifted.
'Last year, every win after we had our first win in the postseason was a surprise,' Scaramuzzi said. 'We didn't really have any expectations. This year, we said from the beginning the biggest challenge is managing expectations because we know we're that good.'
Anthony, meanwhile, has been embracing that challenge.
'We just know we're capable of getting there and we're not playing down to any team,' Anthony said. 'We're here to win and to make a state run again. We're excited. It makes it way better.
'They're trying to beat us and we're like, no, that's not going to happen.'

German Cup: Ten Hag makes successful debut with Bayer Leverkusen and Bielefeld upsets Bremen

BERLIN (AP) — Erik ten Hag made a winning start as Bayer Leverkusen coach with a 4-0 result at fourth-tier team Sonnenhof Großaspach in the first round of the German Cup on Friday. Patrik Schick, Brazilian wing back Arthur, debutant Christian Kofane and Álex Grimaldo all scored, but they assumed control only after Großaspach captain Volkan Celikwas was sent off in the 66th with two bookings in as many minutes. Leverkusen was forced to defend for long periods after Schick's 32nd-minute opener. The Czech forward also needed to clear the ball off the line. Arthur scored the second shortly after Celikwas' sending off and the other goals followed Mert Tasdelen's late sending off for a bad challenge on Leverkusen defender Axel Tape. Ten Hag, the former Manchester United manager, took over from the Real Madrid-bound Xabi Alonso and has had little time to work with a squad undergoing huge changes. Key players like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Granit Xhaka have left while Kofane, Tape, Ernest Poku, Ibrahim Maza, Jarell Quansah and goalkeeper Mark Flekken all made their debuts on Friday. 'Of course it needs time, you could see not every action worked out,' Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said of the changes. 'But we saw today that we've got interesting young players. Ibrahim Maza did well and showed his qualities between the lines. And that's why it will take a little time, but we still have a good team.' The match was interrupted in the first half by a summer storm featuring hailstones. Referee Michael Bacher led the teams off the field. It resumed after a 40-minute break. Bielefeld does it again American forward Isaiah Young struck in the final minutes to fire last season's beaten finalist Arminia Bielefeld into the second round with a 1-0 win over Werder Bremen. The Bundesliga side's Leonardo Bittencourt was sent off in the 54th and Bielefeld pushed hard for the winner. Young made his entrance in the 79th and sent the home fans wild when he tucked the ball inside the left post in the third minute of stoppage time. Bielefeld, then playing in the third division, knocked out a host of Bundesliga clubs — including Bremen — on its way to the final in May, when Stuttgart proved too strong. Stuttgart's title defense won't start till later this month as it's playing Bayern Munich in the German Supercup on Saturday. Also on Friday, Union Berlin routed fourth-tier side Gütersloh 5-0 away, and second-division Magdeburg enjoyed a 3-1 win at third-division Saarbrücken. ___ AP soccer: Ciarán Fahey, The Associated Press

Panthers signing QB Bryce Perkins after Andy Dalton injury

In need of depth at quarterback, the Carolina Panthers intend to sign Bryce Perkins, according to reports. The 2025 United Football League MVP will join the Panthers after backup QB Andy Dalton exited Saturday's preseason game with a right elbow sprain. That left Jack Plummer as the only quarterback option behind starter Bryce Young. The 6-foot-3, 214-pound Perkins was named the UFL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year this past season, passing for 1,342 yards and nine touchdowns (two interceptions) while leading the Michigan Panthers to the league championship. In the title game, he threw for 338 yards and four touchdowns. Undrafted out of Virginia in 2020, Perkins spent three seasons with the Los Angeles Rams. His only game time came in 2022, when he appeared in five games and went 19-for-34 for 161 yards and a touchdown against two interceptions. He also rushed for 90 yards. Carolina (0-2) wraps up its preseason schedule on Thursday when the Panthers host the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dalton, who enters his third year with Carolina and 15th year in the league, was expected to undergo further testing on Sunday to determine the severity of the injury. In his first two seasons with the Panthers, Dalton appeared in nine games, passing for 1,350 yards and nine touchdowns as the backup QB. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Panthers signing reigning UFL MVP after injury to QB Andy Dalton

The Carolina Panthers are adding another Bryce to their quarterback room. As first reported by ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter on Sunday, the Panthers plan on signing quarterback Bryce Perkins. The move comes after yesterday's right elbow injury to backup Andy Dalton, who made an early exit from the 20-3 loss to the Houston Texans. Perkins, a University of Virginia standout, first broke into the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Rams in 2020. He'd go on to appear in five games during the 2022 campaign, where he completed 19 of his 34 passing attempts for 161 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. The 6-foot-2, 215-pounder has played the last two years with the United Football League's Michigan Panthers. He was named the league's Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year in 2025—as he passed for 1,342 yards and scored 14 total touchdowns (five rushing) over seven outings. Panthers head coach Dave Canales told reporters on Saturday that he does not plan on playing his starters in the team's preseason finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers this week. That plan, along with Dalton's injury, could leave Carolina with just Perkins and Jack Plummer at the quarterback position on Thursday.
