Piyush Goyal begins two-day visit to Italy for bolstering bilateral economic ties
New Delhi: Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal commenced his two-day official visit to Italy on Wednesday, after completing his engagements in France focused on strengthening India–France economic cooperation.
The Italy leg of the visit reaffirms India's commitment to enhancing strategic and economic ties with key European partners and deepening bilateral trade and investment collaboration with Italy, according to an official statement.
During the visit, the Minister will co-chair the 22nd Session of the India–Italy Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation (JCEC) with Italy's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, Antonio Tajani.
This engagement takes place in the context of a defining phase in India–Italy bilateral relations, following the launch of the India–Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan (JSAP) 2025–2029. The plan, announced after the meeting between Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Giorgia Meloni on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro in November 2024, is built on ten thematic pillars, with economic cooperation as a core area of focus.
The 22nd JCEC session in Rome will offer both sides an opportunity to assess progress and identify new avenues for collaboration in high-impact areas such as Industry 4.0, agritech, digitalisation, energy transition, sustainable mobility, and the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC). These deliberations are expected to further strengthen bilateral economic connectivity and foster strategic industrial partnerships.
Goyal will also lead a high-level Indian business delegation to the India–Italy Growth Forum in Brescia, a major industrial hub. The forum will bring together key enterprises and stakeholders from both countries to promote investment, build business-to-business linkages, and explore synergies in sectors aligned with innovation and sustainability.
The visit reflects the growing political will and converging economic aspirations between India and its European partners. It aims to translate shared leadership vision into durable partnerships that drive inclusive growth, industrial transformation, and global economic resilience, the statement added.

Tesla share price crashed more than 14% after Musk called out Trump's 'big beautiful bill.' The new bill proposed the elimination of federal EV tax credits, an incentive for Tesla sales. Removing these credits may pose a $1.2 billion challenge for Tesla, which currently faces challenges such as decreasing demand, declining profits, according to JPMorgan analyst Ryan Brinkman, as Mint reported on June 4, 2025. In March, Tesla witnessed a major decline due to concerns about demand for the company's electric vehicles. During this period, Tesla lost $130 billion in market value, Mint reported on March 11, 2025. Reportedly, Tesla chief's prominent involvement in politics has significantly impacted the EV giant's business. Investors previously voiced worries that Musk's role in heading the Department of Government Efficiency to reduce government expenditures is taking his attention away from overseeing his businesses, such as Tesla, SpaceX, X, and xAI. However, Musk officially left DOGE on May 29. The Tesla CEO overlooked its customer base while catering to Trump's administration, US marketing professor Scott Galloway said in a podcast. 'He's alienated the wrong people,' he said. 'Three-quarters of Republicans would never consider buying an EV. So he's cozied up to the people who aren't interested in EVs," Galloway added. Notably, Trump repeatedly championed for 'drill baby drill', advocating to raise domestic oil and gas production, which raised concerns over demand for EV vehicles. Galloway also highlighted how Tesla's sales fell nearly 59% in France, 81% in Sweden, 74% in the Netherlands, 66% in Denmark, 50% in Switzerland and 33% in Portugal. Musk's recent involvement in the political affairs of various European countries, a key EV market, through his social media platform X, has affected Tesla sales region, CNN reported. Meanwhile, Chinese EV maker BYD surpassed Tesla sales in Europe for the first time in April, according to a report from Jato Dynamics. Tesla's profits dropped 71% by the end of April, Musk confirmed in an earnings call that he plans to reduce his involvement with DOGE from May onwards.

'US with India in fight against terror': Deputy Secretary of State tells Indian delegation
WASHINGTON: The US stands strong with India in the fight against terrorism, US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau told Congress MP Shashi Tharoor-led all-party delegation here to convey India's stance on the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor. The Indian delegation met Landau here on Friday as it wrapped up the crucial US leg of its multi-nation tour, briefing key interlocutors about Operation Sindoor targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. "The all-party parliamentary delegation led by Dr. @ShashiTharoor had a warm and candid conversation with US Deputy Secretary of State Landau. The Indian delegation briefed him on the atrocities of the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor," the Indian Embassy said on X. Landau, in a post on X, said it was a "GREAT" meeting with the Indian parliamentary representatives. "I reaffirmed that the US stands strong with India in the fight against terrorism. We discussed the US-India strategic relationship, including expanding trade and commercial ties to foster growth and prosperity for both countries," he said. A statement issued by State Department Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said Landau "reaffirmed the United States' strong support of India in the fight against terrorism and the strategic partnership between the two countries." The delegation discussed with Landau the importance of advancing key areas of the bilateral relationship, including expanding trade and commercial ties to foster economic growth and prosperity in both countries, according to the statement. The embassy, in a statement said, that during the meeting with Landau, the delegation briefed him on the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam, discussed India's subsequent Operation Sindoor, and put forth India's firm resolve to counter cross-border terrorism in all its forms. "The deputy secretary reaffirmed the United States' strong support for India in the fight against terrorism. The two sides also had a wide-ranging conversation on the importance of strengthening bilateral relationships through advancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest," it said. The delegation also had a "productive meeting" with Senator Chris Van Hollen, a member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee. It briefed him on the heinous terrorist attack in Pahalgam, discussed India's subsequent Operation Sindoor, and put forth India's firm resolve to counter cross-border terrorism in all its forms, the embassy said on X. The senator sympathised with the victims of repeated terror attacks in India, saying the US stood with India in the fight against terrorism, and expressed support for New Delhi's right to defend itself. Tharoor also spoke over the phone with Senator Cory Booker, a member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and described the conversation as "warm and productive." He briefed Booker on the "monstrous" terror attack in Pahalgam and outlined the repeated provocations of terrorism emanating from across the border, laid out the details of Operation Sindoor, and emphasised India's firm resolve in countering any future acts of terrorism. "Senator Booker unequivocally condemned terrorism and expressed sympathies with the victims. The conversation also touched upon broader themes in the India-US strategic partnership, which enjoys robust support," Tharoor said, adding that he hopes to meet Booker "Next time in person." Apart from Tharoor, the delegation comprises MPs Sarfaraz Ahmad, Ganti Harish Madhur Balayogi, Shashank Mani Tripathi, Bhubaneswar Kalita, Milind Deora, Tejasvi Surya, and India's former Ambassador to the US Taranjit Sandhu. Several prominent American lawmakers and congressmen, as well as policy experts, attended a special reception hosted by the Indian Embassy on Thursday night and interacted with the delegation.
