Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga sustains ankle injury, could miss start of La Liga season

New York Times10-08-2025
Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga is facing a race against time to be fit for the start of the La Liga season after sustaining an ankle injury.
The 22-year-old missed multiple training sessions, including one on Sunday morning, and is a doubt for the team's last pre-season friendly with Austrian side Tirol on Tuesday. The scale of the ankle issue is currently unclear, though it is an injury which typically takes a period of weeks from which to make a full recovery.

Camavinga missed the final six matches of Madrid's 2024-25 season — including the Copa del Rey final — with a left abductor tear he suffered in the club's 1-0 win over Getafe, and did not recover in time to feature for the subsequent Club World Cup.
The France international made 35 appearances for Madrid in all competitions last season in an injury-disrupted campaign which saw him sidelined on four separate occasions.
Camavinga was sidelined for around seven weeks at the beginning of the season after he sprained a ligament in his left knee. He also missed over two weeks of action between November and December after picking up a hamstring injury in the Champions League defeat to Liverpool. Another hamstring issue ruled Camavinga out for three weeks between January and February.
Madrid beat off competition from Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain to sign Camavinga in 2021. The midfielder has since made 180 appearances for the Spanish club, and has helped them claim two La Liga titles, two Champions League trophies while also twice winning the Supercopa.
Xabi Alonso's side face Tirol on Tuesday before their La Liga campaign gets underway on August 19 at home to Osasuna.
In July, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and La Liga denied a request submitted by Madrid to postpone their first game of the season following their involvement in the latter stages of the Club World Cup, in which they were defeated 4-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-final.

La Liga Round Up: Athletic Club battle back vs Sevilla as Espanyol stun Atletico Madrid

The first Sunday of the 2025/26 La Liga season produced three cracking games including a fight back win for Athletic Club at home to Sevilla. Getafe cruised to a 2-0 win on the road and Atletico Madrid rounded off the day with xxx. Let's see how Sunday's action unfolded… Celta Vigo 0-2 Getafe Celta Vigo secured European qualification at the end of last season but they were caught cold by Getafe in Galicia. After a low key first half, the visitors edged in front just after the restart, as Christantus Uche powered clear to set up Adrian Liso for a debut goal. Uche then sealed the result for Getafe on 72 minutes, as he was once again too quick for the Celta backline, before slotting past Ionuț Radu. Athletic Club 3-2 Sevilla Athletic Club survived a late comeback to start the campaign with a win in Bilbao. Nico Williams got the ball rolling early on, as he slotted home from the penalty spot, and immediately dedicated it to the home fans following his decision to stay at the Estadio San Mames. Williams Jr then turned provider as his deflected cross was turned home by Maroan Sannadi from close range. However, they left the door open for Sevilla after the restart, as Dodi Lukebakio scored on the hour mark before Lucien Agoume netted an equaliser. That looked to turn the tide in the visitors favour, but the final twist belonged to the hosts, as Robert Navarro grabbed his chance for the winner. Espanyol 2-1 Atletico Madrid Diego Simeone's new-look Atletico Madrid were stunned by Espanyol's late rally in Barcelona. Chances flowed at both ends early on with Leandro Cabrera denied by Jan Oblak and Alvarez was kept out by Marko Dmitrovic. However, a moment of magic from Argentinian hauled Atletico Madrid in front before the break, as he curled home a magic free kick. That looked to set the visitors on course for victory, but Espanyol stayed in game, and Miguel Rubio stabbed the hosts level from close range. As Espanyol threw caution to the wind late on, it paid off in style, as Pere Milla header home a cracking winner. Images via Getty Images/OneFootball

Nico Williams leads Athletic Bilbao to a 3-2 win over Sevilla in their Spanish league opener

MADRID (AP) — With transfer rumors in the past, Nico Williams led Athletic Bilbao to a 3-2 win over Sevilla in its opening Spanish league match on Sunday. Williams, who had been linked with a move to Barcelona in the offseason but seems set to stay with his boyhood club, put the hosts ahead by converting a 36th-minute penalty kick. Athletic, coming off a fourth-placed finish last season, added to the lead with a goal from Maroan Sannadi in the 43rd before Sevilla rallied with goals by Dodi Lukebakio in the 60th and Lucien Agoume in the 72nd. Robert Navarro put Athletic back in front for good by scoring in the 81st. Goalkeeper Unai Simon helped the hosts secure the victory as Sevilla pressed forward to the end. It was Athletic's first match with Iñaki Williams, Nico Williams' older brother, as its main captain — a first for a Black player at the club that traditionally only fields players from Spain's northern Basque Country region or adjoining areas. Atletico Madrid, the third-placed finisher last season, played at Espanyol later Sunday. Depleted Getafe wins away Getafe got off to a 2-0 win at Celta Vigo with second-half goals from Adrián Liso and Christantus Uche. The Madrid club had a depleted squad after not being able to register many of its new players because of financial fair play regulations. It was a disappointing start for Celta after a season in which it finished in the European places. ___
