Punjab rolls out 'Hawk Eye' surveillance
The Punjab Environmental Protection Department has launched Pakistan's first aerial surveillance initiative by establishing a dedicated drone-based monitoring company.
The innovative step, spearheaded by Director General Environment Imran Hamid Sheikh, is part of the cutting-edge "Hawk Eye Project," which formally commenced aerial environmental monitoring across the province.
According to department officials, thermal technology-equipped drones and a specially trained GIS wing have been deployed in the field.
These advanced drones will not only identify industries and entities engaged in environmentally harmful activities but will also provide oversight on the performance of field staff, ensuring accountability.
DG Imran Hamid Sheikh stated that under the Hawk Eye Project, a comprehensive e-mapping of all industries and brick kilns across Punjab has begun. He emphasised that aerial surveillance would allow for real-time detection of environmental violations, significantly improving enforcement mechanisms.
During the project's inaugural surveillance operation, the GIS team identified three active pyrolysis plants in the Mehmood Booti area of Lahore. A detailed report was immediately submitted to the DG Environment, and an explanation will be sought from the Lahore field office regarding the matter.
Furthermore, the team discovered four other industrial units and an empty plot containing hundreds of sacks filled with carbon. Experts have warned that such carbon stockpiles pose significant environmental risks and require urgent action.
Authorities assert that the Hawk Eye Project represents a groundbreaking step in environmental monitoring and marks the beginning of a new era in environmental governance in Punjab.
Meanwhile, terming it a "defining moment" in the provincial government's efforts to combat climate change challenges, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said the launch of Pakistan's first-ever smart environmental protection force was a bold leap toward a cleaner, greener and climate-resilient future.
"Equipped with drone surveillance, real-time AQI monitors, mobile labs, and specialiSed squads across key sectorsindustry, water, plastic, agriculture, transport, and fuelthis pioneering Force is committed to rapid response, accurate enforcement, and sustained air quality improvement," she said in a post on 'X'.

LCCI demands cut in DC rates, curbs on sealing of industries
LAHORE: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry has raised serious concerns about the plight of industrial units operating in Saggian Lahore and surrounding areas under the jurisdiction of Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA). In an emergency meeting held at LCCI, industrialists unanimously appealed to Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to take immediate notice of the crisis. LCCI Acting President Engneer Khalid Usman, former LCCI President Muhammad Ali Mian, Convener of Standing Committee Ali Sheraz, Zafar iqbal, Akram dewan, Muhammad Ameen, Muhammad Hanan, Muhammad Yonus, Tanveer Hussain, Muhammad Adeel and Advocate M Waqar also spoke on the occasion. Engineer Khalid Usman and Muhammad Ali Mian highlighted that major issue is imposition of DC rate that is 10 times higher than standard rates in the jurisdiction of RUDA. They said that over 1,000 industrial units, ranging from small workshops to large factories, are facing existential threats due to these inflated charges. Usman emphasized that these industries employ more than 10,000 workers directly and support thousands of families indirectly. If RUDA continues with this unfair taxation, we will see massive job losses and industrial collapse. While painting a grim picture of the potential consequences, they said that forcing industries to pay unaffordable DC rates will lead to shut downs. When factories close, workers lose livelihoods, and that creates social unrest and law-and-order problems. They demanded immediate reduction in DC rates to reasonable levels, restriction on sealing or eviction of industrial units and consultation with stakeholders before finalizing new rates. Participants of the meeting said that industrialists have pinned their hopes on CM Maryam Nawaz's intervention. 'We believe the Chief Minister, who has prioritized economic development, will understand our plight and take necessary action. PTI's rigging claims baseless, shameful: Azma
LAHORE: Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari has said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)'s claim of election rigging after suffering a clear defeat by 39,000 votes is extremely shameful and tantamount to denying reality. She stated that according to the FAFEN report, 116 polling agents expressed satisfaction with the electoral process. She added that the people of Sambrial have out rightly rejected and cast away the anti-state narrative of the PTI founder. She said that the people of Punjab now vote for and strongly support Maryam Nawaz's politics of public service, as the Pakistan Muslim League (N) is the only party with a genuine vision for development, stability, and public welfare. Responding to PTI leader Waqas Akram's press conference, Azma Bokhari stated that PTI faced a humiliating defeat in the Sambrial by-election. As per FAFEN's report, presiding officers duly provided Form 45 to polling agents, and out of 121 interviews conducted, 116 polling agents confirmed their satisfaction with the voting process. She noted that the vote share of the Pakistan Muslim League (N) in Sambrial increased from 41% to 59%, while PTI's vote share dropped from 35% to 29%. These statistics are enough to open the eyes of so-called intellectuals and analysts who continue to push PTI's narrative, she said, adding: 'Blaming the police and district administration instead of accepting defeat is a long-standing habit of PTI.' She reiterated that the people of Sambrial have firmly rejected the founder of PTI's anti-state rhetoric. The people of Punjab now vote for Maryam Nawaz's politics of service and continue to support it. Punjab gets first Child Protection Policy
The Punjab cabinet has approved the province's first-ever comprehensive Child Protection Policy. This policy developed by the Child Protection and Welfare Bureau with technical support from UNICEF Pakistan was described as a new benchmark for child welfare, marking a transformative step toward ending violence, abuse, exploitation and neglect against children in the communities. The policy, according to the CPWB chairperson, serves as a comprehensive roadmap for child protection mechanisms across Punjab. It is the culmination of efforts that began over two years ago with the submission of the draft to the home department. Case management activities under the policy framework have been underway for over a year. Chairing the cabinet meeting that took up 101 agenda items, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif also announced a plan to reduce the power tariffs in order to provide maximum relief to the people. This is the second time that a province was fiddling with electricity tariffs that originally is a federal subject. Once implemented, Punjab will became the first province to voluntarily reduce electricity tariffs. The chief minister approved reduction in the tariffs of Punjab's power companies. On the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the tariffs may be reduced by 30 to 40 per cent. The provincial cabinet approved the reduction in tariffs of the Quaid-i-Azam and Punjab Thermal Power Private Limited. To address the grievances of the provinces estranged farmers, the chief minister said that a huge package is going to be given to the wheat growers. It was informed in the meeting that the payment of Rs5,000 per acre subsidy has been completed to 514,000 wheat farmers. The payment will be made after the verification process of another 500,000 farmers is completed. Al allocation of Rs63 billion was provided in the second phase through the Kisan Card and farmers have purchased fertilizer worth Rs18 billion. The cabinet approved the Chief Minister Wheat Programme 2025. Continuing with the tradition the provincial PML-N government of creating layers upon layers of companies and authorities, the cabinet approved the establishment of the Air Punjab Private Limited Company. The CM set a target of launching the Air Punjab within a year. She ordered immediate steps for closing vaping centres in the province. She also directed the authorities to ensure safety gear for labourers and assigned the labour department a target of implementing safety SOPs for workers within a month. The provincial cabinet approved ration cards for workers and miners registered with the labour department and provision of electric buses in nine divisions of Punjab. The CM issued directives to establish charging stations in all major cities as soon as possible. Eco-tourism project were approved for Changa Manga and Lal Sohanra parks.
