Govt focused on boosting small, medium-sized enterprises: PM
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Thursday that the government is prioritising small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and youth employment training to drive economic growth and job creation.
Chairing a steering committee meeting of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA), the PM directed the recruitment of skilled personnel and stressed the need for professional training in the SME sector.
He highlighted SMEDA's role in strengthening the rural economy and ordered an expansion of its interest-free loan programme to include all rural populations, particularly women.
PM Shehbaz also instructed the merger of all federal vocational training institutions into a single entity to streamline efforts.
The meeting was informed that micro-enterprises have been integrated into the SME sector, and a comprehensive policy is under development. The private sector's representation on the SMEDA board is also being increased.
The Ministry of Commerce and SMEDA are collaborating to identify export opportunities for SMEs, with a new performance management framework set to enhance efficiency.
Additionally, SMEDA has conducted 28 training programmes, benefiting 953 participants, while an export assistance programme and a financial literacy initiative are in the pipeline.
In a separate meeting on the National Youth Employment Plan, PM Shehbaz approved a strategy to align vocational training with market and industry demands.
He announced he would personally oversee the plan's monthly progress and urged authorities to liaise with local industries to ensure the training aligns with workforce needs.
'The talented youth of Pakistan are the country's most valuable asset,' he said, adding that the government is committed to empowering them through vocational training and skill development.
Officials briefed the Prime Minister that between 2.4 million and 6 million young people will receive vocational training over the next four years to enhance their employability.
A Digital Youth Hub is also set to be launched this month, aimed at connecting young job seekers with training and employment opportunities.
PM Shehbaz praised the efforts of all ministries involved and reaffirmed the government's commitment to creating employment opportunities for Pakistan's youth.

More monsoon rains deluge various parts of Karachi
Monsoon rains continue to batter Karachi as different parts of the city received moderate to heavy rains on the third consecutive day as well on Thursday. Rain lashed Orangi Town, Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Baldia Town, Superhighway, Bahria Town, Malir, University Road, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Sharea Faisal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Shah Faisal Town and their adjacent areas, while two days' rain had already devastated the city's infrastructure and laid bare claims of the local government as well as utility service providers. According to Aaj News, at least 19 people have died in rain-related incidents in the port city since Tuesday afternoon as torrential rains wreaked havoc in the highly densely populated megalopolis, plunging many parts of the city into darkness for over 24 hours, damaging road infrastructure and creating traffic chaos. Moreover, relentless torrential rains have paralysed economic activities in Karachi, causing an estimated Rs15 billion in losses for traders. The deluge exposed the city's crumbling infrastructure, with flooded streets, overflowing sewers, and thick sludge deterring customers and preventing shops from reopening. PM Shehbaz reaches out to political leaders; assures support to handle flood situation On the other hand, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) said repeated electricity breakdown by K-Electric on several of its installations including pumping stations of Dhabeji, Pipri and Hub had badly affected water supply to the metropolis. The water supply company said many distribution pumping stations were also facing electricity shutdown in the city. The downpour is taking place as persistent weather system is affecting the province, as per the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The heaviest rainfall in Karachi during the last day has been experienced in Orangi Town (113mm), followed by PAF Faisal Base area (43mm), Korangi (35.6mm), Keamari (31mm) and Jinnah Terminal area (28.4mm). Earlier today, the PMD forecast Karachi is expected to experience more widespread rain and thunderstorms on Thursday as strong monsoon currents continue to penetrate most parts of Sindh. The Met Office forecast indicated that scattered moderate rain with few heavy showers will lash the Karachi division and several districts including Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Thatta, Badin, and Umerkot. Additionally, districts in central and upper Sindh, such as Larkana, Sukkur, Shaheed Benazirabad and Dadu, are also likely to receive widespread rain with isolated heavy falls today. In the mean time, the increased water flow has impacted the region's barrages. According to the latest data, the Guddu Barrage is experiencing a medium-level flood, while a low-level flood has been reported at the Sukkur Barrage. The Kotri Barrage is currently operating with a normal water flow. The Met Office warned that high level flood was expected in Guddu Barrage and medium level flood in Sukkur Barrage, with the increase in water inflow. Authorities have advised residents to take necessary precautions and stay informed about the evolving weather situation. PM's relief fund for calamity-hit people set up The prime minister also spoke with Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman and Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui. Discussing with the Jamaat-e-Islami chief the damages caused by recent rains in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and ongoing relief activities, PM Shehbaz appreciated Al-Khidmat Foundation's proactive role in rescue and relief operations. He also discussed with Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui the recent rains and flood situation in Sindh, as well as potential risks from expected rainfall, assuring full cooperation from NDMA and other federal institutions to address any emergency situation. Meanwhile, in response to the widespread devastation caused by recent monsoon floods across Pakistan, the federal government has established the Prime Minister's Relief Fund for floods, earthquakes and other calamities. In a partial revision to its earlier directive, the Finance Division has withdrawn the clause mandating Cabinet members to contribute one month's salary to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund for Flood, Earthquake and Other Calamities. PM Shehbaz reviews relief efforts for flood-affectees in Pakistan's northern areas The Finance Division has issued an official memorandum outlining mandatory salary contributions from senior government officials to bolster the fund. The catastrophic floods have led to significant loss of life, displacement of communities, and extensive damage to both public and private infrastructure. In light of the humanitarian crisis, the prime minister has directed immediate financial mobilisation from within the federal structure. According to the memorandum: Cabinet members will contribute one month's gross salary to the Relief Fund. However, later it was withdrawn. Federal Bureaucracy (BPS 19–22) will donate one day's gross salary. The deductions will be made from gross pay and allowances, prior to any other deductions. Importantly, these contributions will not be considered part of the employees' emoluments for income tax or house rent recovery calculations.
