Jason Bourne Movies Get Major Update for Matt Damon Series
What's the new Jason Bourne movie update?
The deal, according to Variety, will see NBCUniversal gain all rights, excluding publishing, to the book series in perpetuity. Variety's report mentions that this now paves the way for 'new installments' for Matt Damon's Jason Bourne. While no official new movie was announced, it seems like NBCU has big plans for the franchise due to the sum they paid.
No official terms were disclosed, but Variety's report notes that the deal came as part of a 'highly competitive bidding situation' that had upwards of seven offers. In the end, NBCU's offer, which is said to be 'a massive nine-figure proposal,' won out.
'Since its debut in 2002, the iconic Bourne franchise has reshaped the spy genre with groundbreaking films that set new standards for cinematic action,' said Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer. 'We're energized to continue expanding the Bourne universe into the future with exciting new stories for global audiences.'
The Bourne film series began back in 2002, with The Bourne Identity, directed by Doug Liman and starring Damon in the titular role. The film franchise follows the titular Jason Bourne, a CIA assassin suffering from amnesia, played by Damon. The franchise is based on Ludlum's books, and has produced five films so far, the most recent of which was 2016's Jason Bourne.
In total, the Bourne movie franchise is one of the most successful and popular in all of Hollywood. To date, the series has grossed over $1.6 billion, and also helped popularize the more gritty and realistic tones that action thrillers have adopted in the 2000s.

Grammy-nominated singer forced to cancel tour over poor ticket sales. ‘I'm extremely embarrassed.'
Grammy-nominated singer JP Saxe continued to pull the curtain back and let fans in on his decision to cancel his upcoming North American Fall tour. On July 28, the singer best known for his 2019 collaboration with Julia Michaels, 'If the World Was Ending," posted an urgent message on his TikTok account. He told fans that he had exactly 48 hours to sell 20,000 tickets to improve the prospects of Saxe's tour coming into fruition. Although fans tried to rally and bought a few thousand tickets in conjunction with Saxe working to keep prices low at around $50, it was not to be. On Aug. 1, Saxe posted that he made the decision to cancel the tour despite his fans' best efforts. As Saxe explained to The Canadian Press, he was on the verge of concluding his three-album deal with his record label. So, the label itself wasn't going to cover the costs for his slate of North American shows in the fall. Saxe tried to get creative, looking into booking bigger capacity venues to offset potential losses he couldn't afford to have this time around. Saxe then published an op-ed in Variety to detail the reasons why he was so transparent in how his process went for him. 'As a general rule, I'm always trying to practice sincerity in failure rather than the facade of success,' he wrote. 'I think it's really tempting as an artist, or as anyone, to always be projecting that everything is great at all times. And I find that uninteresting and disingenuous.' He thanked fans for their support and explained that those who attended would be promptly refunded. 'Even though a few thousand more people showed up in just a few days — which was emotional and the nicest thing anyone's ever done for me on the internet — it still wasn't enough to save the tour, and I will be humbly refunding every ticket,' Saxe said. Even if it was not meant to be this time around, Saxe still holds on to the belief that he will sell out an entire tour one day. Taylor Swift broke the internet. An hour and 44 minutes into Swift's appearance on the 'New Heights' podcast, the live premiere on YouTube abruptly cut to black. The subscriber count on the 'New Heights' YouTube Channel also saw significant growth during the broadcast, rising from 2.85 million subscribers to 2.91 million. Taylor used her appearance on Travis and Jason Kelce's podcast to reveal the cover art for her new album, 'The Life of a Showgirl,' which will be released on Oct. 3. She also discussed how her wildly successful Eras Tour was the main source of inspiration for the project. 'This album is about what was going on behind the scenes of my inner life during this tour, which was so exuberant and electric and vibrant,' she said. 'It just comes from the most infectiously joyful, wild, dramatic place I was in in my life, and so that effervesence has come through on this record. And like you said, bangers.' She also confirmed that there will be no bonus tracks on 'The Life of a Show Girl.' 'With 'Tortured Poets Department,' I was like here's a data dump of everything I thought, felt, experienced in two or three years. Here's 31 songs. This is 12,' Swift said. 'There's not a thirteenth, there's not other ones coming. This is the record I've been wanting to make for a very long time. I also wanted it to be every single song is on this album for hundreds of reasons, and you couldn't take one out and it be the same album, you couldn't add one and be… It's just right.' Denzel Washington Says ‘I'm Not Interested in Oscars' and ‘Don't Care' About Them: ‘They Won't Do Me a Bit of Good' When I Die
Denzel Washington has nine Academy Award nominations under his belt and two Oscar wins (best supporting actor for 'Glory' and best actor for 'Training Day'), but he places no value on such career milestones. Speaking to 'Jake's Takes' on his 'Highest 2 Lowest' press tour, Washington said no acting decision he makes in his career has to do with winning awards. 'I don't do it for Oscars. I don't care about that kind of stuff,' Washington said. 'I've been at this a long time, and there's time when I won and shouldn't have won and then didn't win and should've won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward.' Why the Hulu-Disney+ Merger Could Prevent a Split and Benefit Both Sides Washington continued, 'I'm not that interested in Oscars. People ask me, 'Where do I keep it?' Well, next to the other one. I'm not bragging! Just telling you how I feel about it. On my last day, [Oscars] aren't going to do me a bit of good.' Just earlier this year, Washington was considered a major Oscar snub after he failed to land a best supporting actor nomination for 'Gladiator II.' Not that Washington cared. As he sarcastically told The New York Times when asked about the snub: 'Are you kidding me? Awww. Oh, I'm so upset. I'm happy for all that did, and I'm happy with what I'm doing.' Not getting caught up in awards has long been Washington's mantra. His 'Training Day' co-star Ethan Hawke appeared on Max's 'Who's Talking to Chris Wallace?' last year and remembered how Washington leaned over to him when Hawke lost best supporting actor on Oscar night to tell him, 'It's better that you didn't win. Losing was better.' 'You don't want an award to improve your status. You want to improve the award's status. That's the way he thinks,' Hawke said about Washington's advice in the moment. 'That's what I'm talking about playing with Babe Ruth. The Academy Award has more power, because Denzel has a couple. It didn't elevate who he was.' 'Highest 2 Lowest' opens in select theaters Aug. 15 from A24 and Apple Studios. The movie will be available to stream on Apple TV+ starting Sept. 5.
