Haveri: In contemporary times, when religious controversies eclipse spiritual values and caste-based tensions pervade social discussions, openly expressing personal religious beliefs can be challenging.
However, as noted by senior writer Prof Baraguru Ramachandrappa, Satish Kulkarni's poetry maintains its relevance through its messages of optimism and support for the underprivileged.
At the lamp-lighting ceremony celebrating Kulkarni's 75th birthday at the KEB Community Hall on Sunday, Prof Ramachandrappa highlighted that genuine rebellion originates from emotional depth. He emphasised that impactful poetry requires deep insight, and poets should preserve their artistic integrity whilst remaining connected to people rather than pursuing material gains.
"Kulkarni's work is recognised for its conscientious approach over mere anger, recognising him as a people's poet," he commended.
Prof Ramachandrappa noted that Kulkarni's engagement with contemporary social matters, while enriching Bandaya literature in the region. He further stated that social change necessitates acknowledging past wrongs and developing greater awareness.
Kulkarni acknowledged that his involvement in Dalit and Bandaya literary movements enabled his recognition in literary circles. He mentioned that Champa was his initial educational foundation, and Prof Baraguru Ramachandrappa is his university. "Though emerging from a traditional family was challenging, Haveri soil gave me everything. Poetry, beyond expectations and anticipations, is my first and last choice," he stated.
Senior writers Dharanidevi Malagatti and Sarjoo Katkar, alongside Byadagi MLA and chairman Basavaraj Shivannanavar, and former MLA Nehru Olekar, were present at the event.

Dalit women survivors seek separate law for caste crimes

1 2 Madurai: Dalit women survivors of caste violence, especially murder of spouses, have emphasised their demand for a separate law to deal with crimes involving inter-caste love marriages or relationships. In several such cases, the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act may not be applicable, they said. At a programme organised by the dalit rights NGO, Evidence, in Madurai on Saturday, activist and survivor Kausalya said that even now, the state and central govts do not have any data on caste ('honour') killings. Her husband Shankar was murdered in a gruesome instance of caste violence in 2016. "When there is no separate law to deal with these cases, some of the accused named remain free. Every time a caste killing happens, I feel depressed and saddened. Recently, I reached out to the girl who was Kavin's lover as I knew the pain she must have been feeling," she added. When a woman is subjected to caste crimes directly or indirectly by physical or verbal means by her own family, she is often forced to toe their line due to fear. "Only when the perpetrator is from another caste and the victim is SC, can the SC/ST Act be invoked. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Write Better, Work Smarter With This Desktop App Grammarly Install Now Undo Convictions are also difficult to get. A separate law is the need of the hour," said A Kathir, executive director, Evidence. Two other survivors, Arulmozhi and Rekha, also shared their experiences of facing caste violence, and stressed how important it was for dalit women to stand together. Rekha said she is working hard and studying to complete engineering. They said mustering the courage to speak out against the violence is more important than worrying about what society thinks. A S Kumari, chairperson, state commission for women, stressed the need for women from marginalised backgrounds to speak out about crimes and issues they face or witness regularly. "In cases of domestic violence as well, we see many women coming forward to complain at police stations. But the husband comes out of jail in a while and his wife is subjected to abuse again, and stripped of freedom. We need stricter laws. Only when women come together, society can change," she said. Commitment to truth, authenticity vital as fighting fake news becomes a daily battle: Nirmala Lakshman

At a time when countering fake news has become a daily battle, commitment to truth and authenticity is the most cardinal virtue of journalism that needs to be practised, Nirmala Lakshman, Chairperson, The Hindu Group Publishing Private Ltd., said here on Saturday. Ms. Lakshman, who is the author of The Tamils: A Portrait Of A Community, was in conversation with Col. David Devasahayam, chairman and managing director of the Radiant Group of Companies, on the topic 'Re-imagining Tamil social fabric today' at the Radiant Wellness Conclave. To a question on social wellness and women, she said, 'Over the years, because of legislation, movements, and protests, there has been progress in terms of gender equality. But we have not really scratched the surface. Social and economic disadvantages still keep women in a much lower focus, both from the national point of view and from their own social wellness aspect. We have a long way to go.' She expressed concern over caste-based killings and violence against members of the Dalit community. On inclusivity and acceptance in Tamil Nadu, she said rural India was well exposed to the outside world. Several families honoured heroes they revered by naming children after them, such as Lenin and Stalin. 'It is a particularly wonderful Tamil characteristic to look at the world outside. It is not just about Tamil Nadu or Tamilians, contrary to the notion that Tamils are insular,' she added. Nine aspects of wellness In his keynote address, Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor spoke on nine aspects of wellness such as physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social, environmental, occupational, financial and cultural. He expressed concern over the prevalence of obesity and diabetes, particularly among urban youth, and highlighted the negative correlation between screen time and mental health. In a conversation with journalist Barkha Dutt on 'Planetary care in crisis', Pasumai Thaayagam Foundation president Sowmiya Anbumani said though Tamil Nadu got enough rainfall, the State was unable to tap its potential due to inadequate storage facilities. She stressed the need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and move towards alternative energy sources. During the conclave, veteran actor Shabana Azmi was honoured with the Radiant Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to Indian and international cinema.

Dalit forum condemns attack on YouTubers

Mangaluru: The Karnataka Dalit Horata Samiti condemned the attack on YouTubers and a reporter from a private Kannada news channel in Dharmasthala recently. Samiti district leader SP Anand told reporters on Saturday, that while the Dakshina Kannada police arrested one person in connection with the incident, around 50-60 individuals were involved in the attack. "All those responsible must be arrested and booked under stringent laws," he demanded. Anand pointed out that one of the injured, cameraman Abhishek, belongs to the Dalit community. "The FIR should also include provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, along with sections related to robbery," he said. The Samiti plans to petition the DK superintendent of police and home minister on the matter. According to Anand, the miscreants alleged that false propaganda was being spread on social media about Dharmasthala's sacred place. "We too respect Dharmasthala and are not against it. We only want the police to identify those who orchestrated the attacks," he said. He welcomed the Special Investigation Team's probe into the alleged mass burial case in Dharmasthala and urged it to bring out the truth. "It is an attack on the democratic process, which is aimed at uncovering the truth," he said. Samiti leader Anil Kumar alleged that the assault was a deliberate conspiracy to suppress facts. "All wrongdoers must be punished. Law is equal for all in this country," he asserted. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
