UAE's teenage karting star Omar Ghannoum sets sights after statement victories

Currently pitting his wits against some of the world's best karting drivers, 17-year-old Omar Ghannoum won the recent third round of the Rotax European Championship, which took place in Belgium.
Ghannoum produced a potentially career-defining performance in Genk to finish ahead of closest challengers Macauley Bishop and Lewis Goff, who took second and third spots on the podium respectively.
It was a hugely impressive display by Ghannoum, and a crucial next step on a journey to what he hopes will be the upper echelons of global racing.
'It was the best moment of my life crossing the finish line in first place, and it is a huge confidence boost going into the next steps of my motorsport career,' the teenager explained.
His victory in Belgium followed another eye-catching win in April when Ghannoum emerged triumphant at the UAE National Rotax Senior Championship, held on the Al-Ain Raceway International Kart Circuit.
What made that particular success all the more impressive was the fact he came out on top in the largest, and most competitive, field in Middle East karting history, with over 75 racers battling it out for glory, subsequently securing his spot at the Rotax Grand Finals, scheduled for Bahrain later this year.
'That win fit perfectly into my journey as I had put in so much work to improve mentally and physically, and obviously on track too,' he said.
'I used the race as a warm-up for getting used to the most difficult karting grid in the world, which I will have to navigate at the Grand Finals in Bahrain.'
Ghannoum is currently thriving in a sport in which he seemed destined to make an impact from a very early age.
His racing career began in the UAE, at Dubai Kartdrome, when he was just 14, although the wheels had been set in motion slightly earlier.
'I have always been a fan of racing cars, but on my 14th birthday I was given the opportunity to drive a professional race kart in America for the first time,' he explained.
'That was the moment when I realized that the sport is perfectly suited for me and my passion for speed and competition.'
Naturally, as well as enjoying the highs, Ghannoum has also had to endure some lows in the early part of his career.
However, 2025 has been an exceptional year so far, and has the potential to become even better as he sets his sights on November's Grand Finals.
'Competing in the Grand Finals, and being the only one waving the UAE flag in the hardest category, is an honor, and I wouldn't want it to go to waste,' said Ghannoum.
'To win that race would be an amazing step forward as it would be one of my last karting races, and I would then be setting my sights on cars.
'It would be an additional confidence boost, alongside the win at the European Championship.'
While immediate success is the obvious priority, Ghannoum is fully focused on what he wants to achieve in the long term.
'My ambitions are to carry the momentum of winning against the hardest grid in world karting in the senior category, into car racing, whether that's GT Racing or Formula 4,' he said.
'My long-term goal is to compete in F1 or the Hypercar category in WEC (World Endurance Championship).'
Given Ghannoum's impressive achievements to date, few would bet against him meeting, and even surpassing, those objectives.

Motor racing-Norris leads McLaren one-two in first Hungarian practice
BUDAPEST: Lando Norris lapped 0.019 of a second quicker than Formula One championship leader Oscar Piastri as the McLaren pair finished one-two in first practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix on Friday. Norris, 16 points behind his Australian teammate going into the last race before the August break, lapped the Hungaroring with a best time of one minute 16.052 seconds with the soft tires on a sunny afternoon. The Briton was on pole at the circuit last year in a race won by Piastri, his first victory in F1. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was third fastest, 0.217 off the pace, with Racing Bulls' French rookie Isack Hadjar in fourth. Lewis Hamilton, winner a record eight times in Hungary, was fifth for Ferrari and suffered a big lock-up as he wrestled with the car. Oliver Bearman was sixth for Haas, ahead of Mercedes pair Kimi Antonelli and George Russell with Red Bull's reigning champion Max Verstappen ninth and Lance Stroll completing the top 10 for Aston Martin. Russell complained about his car's balance and said it was hard to turn. Verstappen's Japanese teammate Yuki Tsunoda was only 17th. Brazilian Felipe Drugovich stood in for Fernando Alonso at Aston Martin, with the Spaniard suffering from back pain, and was 16th fastest. Estonian Paul Aron also took Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber for the session and was last after having to stop before the midpoint of the session due to a technical problem.

Piastri Has ‘Confidence' in His F1 Title Shot as He Returns to Hungary, Where He Got His 1st Win
Some Formula 1 races live in the memory because of thrilling action, some for controversy, some even for being so dull they forced a rule change. And then there's Oscar Piastri's first F1 win, the benchmark for sheer awkwardness. Piastri is happy to be back in Hungary this week, but his breakthrough victory there last year remains a lesson for McLaren as it tries to manage his title fight with teammate Lando Norris. It's all the more important now. Piastri has developed into a genuine title contender over the last year and leads Norris by 16 points following his victory in Belgium last week. 'I have a lot of confidence in myself that I can do it,' the Australian said of his title chances Thursday. 'The pace in the last few weekends, especially (Belgium), I've been very confident in and very proud of. I'm more than capable of continuing that for the rest of the year.' McLaren can reach some milestones this weekend, with a potential 200th win in F1 for the team. It could also be Piastri and Norris' fourth one-two finish in a row, a feat McLaren last managed in 1988. Managing the title rivalry Piastri took the win last year in Hungary, but only after McLaren had to plead over the radio with Norris to 'do the right thing' and let Piastri past, something the British driver was reluctant to do. Piastri had been leading but McLaren's pit strategy, which would normally favor the leader, had put Norris ahead. Piastri thinks the team can still take positives from that situation. 'I think it underlined the good nature in the team. It was obviously a slightly awkward situation, but it highlighted that we will do the right thing in all circumstances -- well, ideally all circumstances -- when we're on track,' Piastri said. 'It showed the trust that we have with the team and with each other as well, that things will be put the right way.' F1 has a history of title fights turning team relationships sour — not least at McLaren with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost over 30 years ago — but Piastri and Norris have kept their rivalry friendly. Even so, there's been a collision in Canada, a near-miss in Austria and Piastri's rejected request for Norris to give up the lead in Britain. Piastri said one factor preventing his relationship with Norris from deteriorating is that both are committed to keeping McLaren on top in F1 for 'many years to come.' 'We've all seen how it can go wrong, but we have a lot of reasons to push for it to not go wrong,' he added.
