Local blood drive honors fallen officer Jacob Derbin's memory
EUCLID, Ohio (WJW) It is one of the easiest things you can do to help someone else.
Giving blood takes just a little time, but it has a big impact on the lives of others. Giving blood is also one of the best ways to remember those whose lives had a big impact on others.
Euclid police officer Jacob Derbin, 23, was killed in the line of duty last year. This spring, that commitment to service continues as his community honors his memory by giving life.
'It's something that we just thought of honoring him and his family. His mother is a nurse at Cleveland Clinic and they're just the greatest family. They've done a lot for Euclid and it's something we can use to remember Jacob Derbin for,' drive organizer Brittany Conoly said.

There is a blood drive at Cleveland Clinic Euclid Hospital every other or month or so, but this blood drive, which is in it's second year, helps more than just the people who will receive blood.
It helps the community not only remember Derbin but to carry on his memory through giving.
'My son worked with him in Euclid. My son's a police officer and it's important that everyone get out and donate blood.' Jim Ralph, of Euclid, said.
It's also important for police officers to carry on as they continue the difficult work of protecting and helping their communities.
'We're just giving a little part of ourselves and this young officer gave all of himself in service to others, so this is just kind of a way to do your small part to recognize his memory and commitment and service because he really did so much for so many,' University Circle Police Chief Tom Wetzel said.

The Red Cross will collect dozens of pints of blood from this drive and every drop will go to preserve someone's life.
It's a good way to remember an officer who gave his life to help others.
'We lost a life, but this is a good way to give back to that,' Conoly said.

At least 4 Akron homes struck by weekend gunfire

One of the bullets struck a resident's mattress, according to a Monday police report. No one was injured. Speeding Volkswagen kills two in Stark County crash: Police Officers responded to the first shooting, near the intersection of East Emerling Avenue and South Main Street just after 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, according to the report. Multiple 911 callers reported gunfire. Witnesses told dispatchers they heard at least five shots, according to the report. Officers found four people, ages 26, 51, 56 and 70, in two homes along East Emerling Avenue that had been struck by gunfire, according to the report. A vehicle parked on the street was also struck. Officers found several shell casings in the area. Police responded to another reported shooting hours later, just after 5 a.m. on Sunday, June 8, in the 300 block of Ira Avenue. Witnesses told authorities they heard gunfire and 'saw people running and screaming in the area,' reads the report. Officers arrived on scene and found seven people inside a home that had been hit by bullets, at least one of which went through a bedroom wall, according to the report. Officers found four shell casings in the area. They also found an ATV in the street, which they believe the suspects used to flee the area. A third shooting was reported at about 4 p.m. on Sunday in the 1200 block of Weiser Avenue. Gypsy-Rose Blanchard calls daughter a new beginning on anniversary of mom's death
On Monday, June 9, Gypsy-Rose Blanchard took to Instagram to commemorate the day that has two meanings. Alongside a photo of herself and her partner Ken Urker holding up sonogram images from when she was pregnant with their daughter Aurora, Blanchard wrote that June 9 is 'ONE day, TWO meanings.' 'One year ago, we saw Aurora for the first time in this sonogram and my heart has never been the same,' the new mom wrote. 'She is my light, my joy, my greatest blessing.' Blanchard and Urker announced the birth of their daughter, Aurora Raina, on New Year's Day. However, June 9 'also marks 10 years since the death of' Blanchard's mom, Clauddine 'Dee Dee' Blanchard. Dee Dee Blanchard was killed in 2015. During her 2018 testimony, Gypsy-Rose Blanchard admitted she 'wanted to be free of her' mother's hold on her, and persuaded her then-boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn, to kill Dee Dee Blanchard. 'I talked him into it,' she said during the trial, NPR reported. According to Blanchard's attorney, Michael Stanfield, Dee Dee Blanchard had Munchausen syndrome by proxy, now known as factitious disorder imposed on another. The Cleveland Clinic categorizes factitious disorder imposed on another as a 'mental health condition where you pretend that someone within your care is sick when they aren't. It's a type of abuse.' As a result of her alleged involvement in her mother's death, Gypsy-Rose Blanchard pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, according to ABC News. She was sentenced to 10 years of prison, but released in December 2023 after serving more than 8 years. As Gypsy-Rose Blanchard continued her statement, she said her mom was 'a woman known not for love, but for the abuse she inflicted on me. That pain shaped my life in ways that led to tragic choices, consequences, and years we BOTH can never get back.' 'I won't pretend she was a good person,' the 33-year-old continued. 'And I won't pretend I've been perfect either. But Aurora… she represents a new beginning.' Gypsy-Rose Blanchard says her daughter is now 'a chance to break every cycle. A chance to raise someone with love, truth, and freedom. A chance to give her a life better than what I had and better than my past choices.' 'I may carry the past, but she carries my future,' the mom continued. 'And I pray that who she becomes will be greater than who I was, and greater than the woman who came before me.'

Speeding Volkswagen kills two in Stark County crash: Police
[WATCH: In the video player above, learn about Ohio's 10 most dangerous highways.] CANTON, Ohio (WJW) – Two people have died after Canton police report a Volkswagen Golf travelling at a 'very high rate of speed' struck a Nissan Altima near 4th Street NW and Wertz Avenue NW. The crash happened at about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 7. Remains found in search for missing teen last seen at airport According to police, both vehicles were traveling on Wertz Avenue. The Golf was heading northbound when it hit the Altima, which was traveling southbound, attempting to turn eastbound onto 4th Street NW, said police. 'The driver of the Golf was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Canton Fire Department. The driver of the Altima was transported by the Canton Fire Department to Aultman Hospital where she later succumb to her injuries,' states a press release. Nationwide recall of Zicam® and Orajel™ products The driver of the Golf has been identified as Christopher Siple Jr., 41, of Canton. The driver of Altima has been identified as Dai'sha Wise, 28, of Canton. The Canton Metro Crash Team responded and is investigating the accident, according to police.
