Daily Mail24-05-2025
Five youths, some as young as 12, have been arrested after a woman was rushed to hospital after being targeted in an unprovoked attack in Sydney.
The woman, 42, and a 40-year-old man, were ambushed inside the courtyard of a unit complex on Oscar Place, in Eastgardens, on Wednesday.
In shocking CCTV of the attack, the woman is seen being pushed to the ground and repeatedly hit and kicked as the man called for help and tried to block the blows.
The attack continued until a passerby with a dog rushed to help the couple.
Police told Daily Mail Australia that despite online reports, there was no information to suggest the couple had been targeted because of their racial background.
It comes after the video was shared to TikTok on Wednesday with the caption: 'In Australia, a Chinese couple was surrounded and brutally attacked by over 20 teenagers in the street - just because they spoke Chinese'.
'This isn't an isolated case - there have been similar attacks in Redfern and Waterloo. The police don't care. The media ignores it.
'If we don't speak up, who will?'
The couple were taken to Maroubra Police Station where they were treated by paramedics for facial injuries before being taken to Prince of Wales Hospital.
They have since been discharged.
Two 12-year-old girls were charged on Thursday over the incident and remain before the courts.
After further investigations, another five children were arrested.
A 14-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl were arrested on Friday evening after attending Maroubra Police Station.
The boy was charged with one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of other(s) and affray.
He was granted conditional bail to attend a children's court on June 16 while the 16-year-old girl will likely be dealt with under the Younger Offenders Act at a later date.
A further two 14-year-old girls and a 13-year-old boy attended Maroubra Police Station where they were arrested and each charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of other(s) and affray.
They have been granted conditional bail to appear at a children's court,
The 14-year-boy is due to appear at a children's Court on June 16 while the 11 and 13-year-olds are due to appear on June 23.
Police are not looking for any other people in relation to the assault.

Extraordinary moment heavily armed cops smash ghost car scam, seizing Bentleys, Ferraris, cash and Tasers - and march man dressed in $4,500 Louis Vuitton jacket out of his Barangaroo apartment

Dramatic footage has captured the moment a sophisticated alleged luxury 'ghost car' loan fraud syndicate was brought down in a major police operation across Sydney. Detectives allege the group used stolen personal details to fraudulently secure loans from multiple financial institutions to purchase luxury 'ghost cars' - vehicles that never existed. Investigations revealed the syndicate's alleged operations extended beyond car financing fraud to large-scale personal, business and home loan fraud against multiple financial institutions. Two men have been charged over the syndicate, following a string of early morning raids by heavily armed police from Strike Force Raptor across the city on Wednesday. One of the accused ringleaders, dressed in a Louis Vuitton bomber jacket valued at more than A$5400, was grilled by detectives before being escorted out of a Crown Sydney apartment in Barangaroo. He was later hit with dozens of serious charges. Police seized luxury cars, designer watches, Chanel jewellery, high-end handbags, drugs and cash in various currencies, a combined haul worth $38 million. Wednesday's raids alone netted $4.1 million worth of items, including two Bentleys, a Ferrari 360, A$20,000, US$12,100 and €1,070. A firearm, two Tasers and body armour were also seized during the raids. The NSW Crime Commission has frozen assets valued at $20 million. A 38-year-old man, arrested at Barangaroo and accused of committing $12.9 million in fraud, has been hit with 87 charges. These include 57 counts of dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage by deception, 14 counts of knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime with intent to conceal, and four counts of using a false document to obtain a financial advantage. He also faces charges of knowingly directing the activities of a criminal group, recklessly dealing with the proceeds of general crime with intent to conceal, and possession of a prohibited drug. His co-accused ringleader, 34, was arrested in Seaforth on Sydney's northern beaches. He has been charged with 107 offences, including 87 counts of knowingly dealing with the proceeds of crime and 19 counts of dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage by deception. Both men were refused bail to appear in court on Thursday. A firearm, two tasers, and body armour (pictured) were also seized. Six people have previously been charged with these offences and remain before the courts. Investigators are scheduled to address the media about the alleged syndicate later on Thursday.

South African couple beg to stay in Australia amid fears of racial violence back home: 'Our death sentence'

A hard-working couple face an anxious wait to see if they will be kicked out of the country and forced to return to South Africa. Charné-Lee Gunning, 31, and her fiancé Ivan Strauss, 37, arrived in Australia on visitor visas in December 2018 after fleeing South Africa. The western Sydney couple are pleading with the federal government not to deport them as they wait for their protection visas to be approved. If their application is rejected, they will have just five weeks to leave Australia and return to South Africa, where they will have nothing to go back to. The couple also fear they'll be racially targeted and forced to live in fear of their lives if they return. With Mr Strauss' skills as an air conditioning technician highly sought after, they're willing to relocate anywhere in order to stay. 'We feel safe here, I can't begin to explain how grateful we are to be here,' Ms Gunning told Sky News. 'I feel like that would be our death sentence, especially with what's going on in South Africa at the moment. It has gotten a lot worse since we left.' The pair were both exposed to terrifying violence during their childhoods. Ms Gunning was just three years old when her father was fatally shot in the head. A few years later, intruders tried to break into the granny flat she shared with her mother at a farm in the KwaZulu-Natal province. 'They were threatening what they were going to do to us when they got through the window. It was of a sexual nature,' she recalled. Mr Strauss and his family were also subjected to violence, including a terrifying incident where he and his father were held up by two armed men. The couple were also forced off the road while driving a motorbike through Pinetown in 2016. 'You have to watch your back the whole time. When we came to Australia, the simple thing of just driving with a window open is amazing,' Mr Strauss said. 'You can't do that back in South Africa.' His fiancée added: 'The nightmares are still there but I have a sense of safety here that I've never had before.' The couple first applied for protection visas shortly after they arrived in Australia but were denied. They have since appealed and are waiting for the Administrative Review Tribunal to decide their fate. 'We will move anywhere in Australia, even most remote place, where skills needed, we will go there,' Ms Gunning said. A Department of Home Affairs spokesperson said that it can't comment on individual cases due to privacy reasons. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump sparked global controversy after fast-tracking visas for white South African farmers, claiming they were victims of 'genocide' – a claim fiercely rejected by South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa. 'It's a genocide taking place that you people don't want to write about,' President Trump said at the time. 'Farmers are being killed, they happen to be white but whether they are white or black it makes no difference to me.' But in a televised meeting at the White House, President Ramaphosa pushed back hard against suggestions white farmers were being specifically targeted. 'People who do get killed, unfortunately through criminal activity, are not only white people, majority of them are black people,' he said. The debate has now turned to whether Australia should follow the US lead. Shadow Immigration Minister Paul Scarr made it clear the same rules must apply to everyone. 'I think it is important that the laws are applied the same way across people seeking asylum or humanitarian visas from anywhere in the world,' he said.

Lidia Thorpe puts forward motion on ‘shameful' deaths in custody numbers

Independent senator Lidia Thorpe put forward a motion in the Senate Thursday morning, extending sympathies to the families of the 17 First Nations people who have died in custody this year, including 24-year-old Warlpiri man Kumanjayi White who died in May after being restrained by officers at an Alice Springs supermarket. The motion coincides with the release of the latest Closing the Gap report, which revealed only four of 19 targets were on track to be met by 2031. Thorpe also spoke of the impact on her family after the death of her cousin, Joshua Kerr, a 32-year-old Yorta Yorta and Gunaikurnai man who died in custody in August 2022
