After Sarasbaug closure, plea against entry ban on religious ground

Pune: Activists from the Muslim community on Monday submitted a letter to the district collector's office requesting an enquiry into the closure of Sarasbaug on Sunday after Rajya Sabha member Medha Kulkarni wrote to PMC objecting celebration of Basi Eid by eating non-vegetarian food in the garden that also hosts a temple.

Anwar Shaikh, director of Miss Farha Charitable Foundation who wrote the letter, claimed that the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)'s decision to keep Sarasbaug closed was "discriminatory in nature", and action must be taken against officials involved in the decision. Basi Eid was celebrated a day after Saturday's Eid-al-Adha.
Shaikh, who tried meeting the PMC commissioner and district collector on Monday but could not, submitted his letter in their respective offices.
Shaikh said he would move court, the state human rights commission and other constitutional forums for justice if timely action was not taken. "We also want a public apology from PMC officials for hurting the sentiments and denying public access. They should also give written assurances that no public space will be closed in future based on religion, politics or biased recommendations," he said.
Shaikh in his letter to the collector said the decision "created a sense of alienation and exclusion among tax-paying citizens, especially Muslims, who have an equal right to every public facility and violated the right to equality (Article 14), freedom to practice religion (Article 25), and freedom of movement and expression (Article 19) enshrined in the Constitution".
When contacted, PMC commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said he would examine the issue, check if the place (Sarasbaug) had been historically used for celebrations after Eid, and why the gardens department issued a closure notice on Sunday.
He said: "The allegation that I acted solely on the MP's letter is untrue. I received MP Medha Kulkarni's letter on Friday. As I do not know details about this garden, I called the head of the gardens department and told him to look into the matter.

There is a temple inside the garden. I only know that Muslims were not allowed to visit the temple premises," he said.
Ram said: "However, if the Muslims were not allowed into the garden, then I will ask the head of the gardens department on what basis the decision was taken. There was no intention to hurt any religious sentiments."
Shaikh, however, said the public garden has hosted many Hindu religious festivals and even stayed open late to facilitate such festivals.
"We have never objected to the park being used for Hindu religious festivals, because we respect all religions. Then why are we being discriminated against? Today it is the park, tomorrow you may block hospitals for us, saying we eat non-vegetarian food. If they wanted to protect the sanctity of the temple, they could have cordoned off the area around the temple or instructed people not to eat anything," he Shaikh.
MP Kulkarni told TOI that she had asked PMC to close the garden on Sunday as various Hindu organisations had complained that non-vegetarian food could be consumed on the temple premises during Basi Eid.
"The entire area belongs to the temple trust, which was leased to PMC. It is not that the garden is separate from the temple. One can eat non-vegetarian food at home, but not near the temple."
Arvind Shinde, the city unit chief of Congress, said the PMC's "action was unconstitutional". He said: "I spoke to the commissioner over the phone and told him to take action against the superintendent of the civic body's gardens department. In all these years, nobody has complained about eating anything in the garden. This is the first time an MP is trying to disturb the harmony of Pune. If you had an issue with people eating non-vegetarian food, you should have said that or banned all kinds of eating on the garden premises.

'Am I going to war ... ': Pakistan politician Sherry Rehman gets flustered when grilled on Pakistan's terror links; watch video

Sherry Rehman Former Pakistani ambassador Sherry Rehman engaged in a heated exchange with Sky News when asked questions over allegations of Pakistan harbouring terrorist organizations, particularly in light of the recent Pahalgam attack. When questioned about Brigade 313, which TRAC (Terrorism Research and Analysis Consortium) analysts identify as an Al Qaeda-affiliated umbrella group operating in Pakistan, Rehman responded defensively. "I don't know who told you this, but I can produce any number of pages saying all this," she retorted, suggesting the creation of a "digital dossier" to counter such claims. She further deflected by pointing to India's internal conflicts: "Are we responsible for all 100 insurgencies running in India?" — SkyYaldaHakim (@SkyYaldaHakim) The interviewer, Hakim, referenced " Operation Sindoor ," which targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) following the Pahalgam attack. UN-designated terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) had also confirmed that its top commander Masood Asghar and ten family members were killed in Bahawalpur during these strikes. Rehman's cryptic response, "Children are not leaders," was followed by her questioning the credibility of international analysts. "Most of the analysts you're quoting are aligned with India's narrative. They only tell India's story," she argued, dismissing claims about Brigade 313's Al Qaeda connections. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 오스템 임플란트 받아가세요 임플란터 더 알아보기 Undo Rehman has long been a prominent voice in Pakistani politics. "All that you have done is against muslims": Congress' Rashid Alvi on 11 years of NDA government

New Delhi [India], June 10 (ANI): As the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) completed 11 years in power at the Centre, Congress leader Rashid Alvi on Monday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance for targeting Muslims by passing laws while not being able to tackle the problems of inflation for the people. 'I have to say with regret that you brought the law of triple talaq against the Muslims. Brought the law of Waqf against Muslims, You are doing everything in this country which is against Muslims,' Congress leader Rashid Alvi told ANI. Criticising demonitisation, repealing Article 370, not listening to farmers and not keeping inflation in check, the Congress leader highlighted them as failures of the Modi-led government. 'You don't realise that during demonetisation, during the summer, so many people died, that is your minus point, and you think of it as a plus point. You used to claim that with demonitisation, black money would be finished, is it finished though? Also said that terror will end, but did terror finish? Just now, so many people died in Pahalgam,' he said. Continuing his jibe at BJP over Kashmir, he added, 'You removed (Article) 370 (from Kashmir), put people in jail, and put 8 lakh soldiers there, but in the last 11 years did you give jobs to people, have you reduced inflation? The Petrol-diesel which you have bought for Rs 35-40 you are giving the same for Rs 100 to the people of the country. Farmers kept sitting for two years, you were not ready to listen to them.' As Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government completed 11 years at the Centre, BJP President and Union Minister JP Nadda highlighted the various achievements of the government, including good governance, change in India's 'political culture,' and several bold decisions made. Nadda said during a press conference, 'The work done under PM Modi's leadership is written in the golden words because of the unimaginable and unique works. PM Modi has changed the country's politics, political culture. The country was appeased 11 years ago. Earlier, saving a political chair by dividing the society was the norm.' (ANI)

Prohibitory orders imposed in Assam's Dhubri after 'breach of peace' amid communal tensions

Prohibitory orders were imposed in Assam's Dhubri town following communal tensions, officials said. Demonstrations were held in the town on Monday to protest the alleged throwing of meat near a temple. Police had to use tear gas shells to bring the situation under control, they said. Issuing an order under section 163 of BNSS, District Magistrate Dibakar Nath on Monday said the restrictions shall come into force with immediate effect and remain in force until further order. "It has been brought to my notice that there is a likelihood of breach of peace and public tranquillity in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of Dhubri Police Station due to communal tension, riot risk, violent protests, etc," he said. Accordingly, he ordered all shops and markets in the Dhubri town area to remain closed and prohibited the assembly of five or more people in any public places. Organising any rally, procession, meeting, or demonstration has also been strictly prohibited, the order mentioned. It exempted the movements of emergency services from the purview of the restrictions, it said. "As the circumstances of the situation do not admit service of notice in due time, this order is passed ex-parte," it added. While speaking to reporters, Nath said, 'I appeal to everyone to maintain peace, and there is no need to panic and get emotional. All must stay indoors and respect each other.' A suspected cow head was found near a temple on Sunday, another officer said. Protesting it, a mob attacked vegetable vendors and e-rickshaw drivers near Dhubri Magistrate Colony and New Market, he said. Nath said that sufficient forces have been mobilised from both state and central agencies, and they have been deployed across the town. Asked if curfew will be imposed, he said, 'There will be no curfew, but a kind of semi-curfew will be there. All shops and markets will be closed. I request all not to pay heed to rumours, and one community must respect the other.' The district administration held meetings between the Hindu and Muslim communities on Sunday and requested both sides to maintain peace. "During today's protest, we lobbed tear gas shells at one place. No one was injured," Nath said without sharing further details. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said a number of cattle were allegedly slaughtered illegally at several places on Eid, on Saturday, and parts of the meat were thrown at multiple locations across the state. He said the police arrested 16 people from different places.
