Forum: Wheelchair-user and companion can watch historic football match with Sailors' help

Straits Times13-05-2025

We would like to thank Forum writer Shalom Lim Ern Rong for his letter 'Make it easier for fans with disabilities to enjoy historic sporting moments' (May 9).
We deeply appreciate his input, and at the Sailors, we are committed to ensuring all fans can enjoy football in a safe, inclusive and dignified environment.
We understand how crucial the presence of a regular caregiver is for persons with disabilities, and we regret the distress caused by the ticketing limitations in this instance.
While the event has experienced unprecedented demand and has reached full capacity, we are happy to accommodate patrons who require special assistance.
We have contacted Mr Lim to give him and his companion access to the wheelchair-accessible seating area at Bishan Stadium for our Asian Champions League Two Final against Sharjah FC on May 18, and have also worked out the entry route for them.
As a club, we take inclusivity and accessibility seriously, and we will do our best to accommodate exceptional requests that align with these principles where possible. Football is for everyone, and we are committed to serving our fans, who are the spirit and heart of our events.

Lewandowski will not play for Poland under current coach after losing captaincy

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - World Cup - European Qualifiers - Group G - Poland v Malta - Stadion Narodowy, Warsaw, Poland - March 24, 2025 Poland's Robert Lewandowski during the warm up before the match REUTERS/Kacper Pempel/File photo Lewandowski will not play for Poland under current coach after losing captaincy Robert Lewandowski said he will not play for Poland again under the current manager, shortly after the striker was stripped of the captaincy role on Sunday. Poland coach Michal Probierz made the decision to replace Lewandowski as national team captain with midfielder Piotr Zielinski. "By decision of coach Michal Probierz, Piotr Zielinski became the new captain of the Polish national team," a Polish football federation (PZPN) statement said. "The coach personally informed Robert Lewandowski, the entire team and the training staff of his decision." Lewandowski's response via social media was swift. "Considering the circumstances and the loss of trust in the Polish national team coach, I have decided to step back from playing for the Polish national team as long as he remains the coach," Lewandowski said. "I hope I will have the chance to play again for the best fans in the world." Lewandowski is not with the current Poland squad, with the Barcelona player citing physical and mental exhaustion after a long season as the reason for his absence. The 36-year-old is Poland's highest goal scorer with 85 goals for his country in a record 158 appearances, and had held the captaincy since 2014. Probierz replaced the sacked Fernando Santos as Poland manager in 2023, taking them to Euro 2024 where his side were the first team to be eliminated. The PZPN said Probierz will respond to questions on the situation in a press conference on Monday. Poland defeated Moldova 2-0 in a friendly on Friday and are away to Finland in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Portugal win Nations League title with shootout success over Spain

MUNICH, Germany - Cristiano Ronaldo was in tears as Portugal picked up their second Nations League title by beating holders Spain 5-3 on penalties following a thrilling 2-2 draw in Sunday's final. Ronaldo's 138th international goal took the final to a shootout, with Alvaro Morata's miss proving costly for Spain as Ruben Neves struck the winning spot kick to spark wild scenes of celebration, with emotion overwhelming the veteran captain. Spain's exhilarating 5-4 victory over France in Thursday's semi-final ensured Luis de la Fuente's side had continued an unbeaten run that stretched back to March 2023 coming into Sunday's showpiece final in Munich. They appeared on course for yet another trophy, on the back last year's European Championship triumph, as Martin Zubimendi tapped home his second international goal in the 21st minute. The holders' lead did not last long, however, as flying Portugal full-back Nuno Mendes slotted home the equaliser after good work from Ronaldo in the build up. A sublime pass from midfielder Pedri helped Mikel Oyarzabal, who netted the winner against England in last year's European Championship final, restore Spain's lead before the break. The tussle between the Iberian neighbours was billed as a clash between old and new – 40-year-old and five-times Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo and Spain's teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. While Yamal, among the favourites to take home one of the most prestigious individual awards this year, struggled to make inroads, Ronaldo pounced on his chance, firing Portugal level from close range just past the hour mark. Ronaldo went off injured late on and neither side could find a winner in extra time, with the game going to a shootout and Portugal netting all five of their penalties to claim the trophy. Forum: Restore locker facilities at ActiveSG stadiums

I want to express my profound frustration and disappointment with the recent removal of locker facilities at ActiveSG stadiums managed by Sport Singapore (SportSG). As a resident of Chua Chu Kang, I have long relied on my neighbourhood stadium for my regular runs. However, I stopped going to my local stadium due to its no-locker policy. I initially thought this was only at ActiveSG Choa Chu Kang Stadium, but imagine my dismay when I recently visited Bukit Gombak Stadium and discovered that it, too, had discontinued locker facilities. In the past, these stadiums provided small locker cubicles for rent at just 20 cents, allowing users like myself to securely store valuables. This was extremely convenient and beneficial for many, as I dislike running with my phone in my hand or carrying valuables in my pockets. I find it perplexing that such a simple yet essential amenity has been discontinued. The absence of lockers discourages me and, I am sure, others from using the facilities and makes exercising less comfortable. I strongly urge SportSG and the relevant authorities to reconsider this policy.
