Ringgit ticks up as ‘Big, Beautiful Bill' debate keeps traders watching

Malay Maila day ago

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar on Wednesday, as the market resumed its observation on further trade negotiations between the United States (US) and China in London, an analyst said.
At 8 am, the local note rose to 4.2290/2380 versus the greenback from Tuesday's close of 4.2360/2420.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US dollar index (DXY) see-sawed between 98.962 and 99.358 last night as traders and investors continued to monitor the US-China trade talks.
'US secretary of commerce Howard Lutnick described the discussion as running well, suggesting the two nations could potentially arrive at a midway (point) in their negotiations,' he told Bernama.
Meanwhile, Mohd Afzanizam said the debate on US President Donald Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill' is still ongoing among the US Senate, as some Republicans are pushing for the phasing out of the clean-energy tax credit on the grounds of protecting investors and jobs from major disruptions.
He said the US fiscal position would be in the spotlight as fiscal deficits and government debt are expected to climb.
'While market sentiments demonstrated a positive sign, it is still an early day. On that note, we expect the ringgit-dollar exchange to remain range-bound between 4.23 and 4.24 today,' he said
At the opening, the ringgit traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies.
It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.9200/9264 from Tuesday's close of 2.9270/9314, and strengthened versus the British pound to 5.7121/7243 from 5.7152/7233, but marginally lower vis-a-vis the euro to 4.8367/8470 from 4.8354/8422 yesterday.
The local currency traded higher against its ASEAN peers.
It gained versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2885/2957 from 3.2932/2981 at Tuesday's close and improved against the Thai baht to 12.9664/13.0040 from 12.9712/9955.
The ringgit was slightly higher vis-a-vis the Philippine peso at 7.57/7.59 from 7.58/7.60 yesterday and inched up against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.8/260.5 from 260.2/260.7 previously. — Bernama

Oracle shares soar as AI cloud demand propels revenue forecast

FILE PHOTO: A screen displays the logo and trading information for Oracle Corporation on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., March 30, 2023. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo (Reuters) -Oracle shares surged nearly 8% in premarket trading on Thursday after the company raised its annual revenue forecast, driven by strong demand for its AI-related cloud services. The stock has risen nearly 6% so far this year as confidence in the software sector remained strong despite geopolitical tensions, even as analysts warn that U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs could undermine Big Tech's AI investments. Earlier this year, Oracle, whose cloud offerings help companies build their AI infrastructure, announced a joint venture called Stargate to deliver large-scale computing capabilities to OpenAI. "Oracle's once-stodgy image levels up to 'cloud-native mage,' and the competitive map now looks less like a classic three-player real time strategy and more like a battle-royale with everyone dropping in, looking for compute loot", said Michael Ashley Schulman, partner at Running Point Capital Advisors. Oracle expects total revenue to be at least $67 billion for fiscal 2026, CEO Safra Catz said on a post-earnings call. The Texas-based company's cloud services quarterly revenue rose 14% to $11.70 billion. Its overall revenue of $15.90 billion beat estimates of $15.59 least nine brokerages have raised their price target post-earnings. Oracle trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 25.86, compared to rivals Microsoft at 31.34 and Amazon at 31.80, according to data compiled by LSEG. Microsoft's stock has gained 12.16%, while Amazon's has decreased by 2.8% so far this year. "ORCL has entered an entirely new wave of enterprise popularity that it has not seen since the Internet era in the late 90s," analysts at Piper Sandler added. 328 million e-invoices processed by LHDN so far

LHDN's e-invoicing director Rasyidah Che Rosli said some smaller taxpayers have joined the e-invoicing system voluntarily ahead of their mandatory dates. GEORGE TOWN : The Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) has validated more than 328 million e-invoices since the country began its move towards a digital tax system last year. LHDN's e-invoicing director Rasyidah Che Rosli said the numbers came from about 35,000 taxpayers who submitted their records through the new system. 'These are from users in Phases 1 and 2. Some smaller taxpayers have also joined voluntarily ahead of their mandatory dates,' she said, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event by CTOS in Bayan Lepas today. LHDN is phasing in e-invoicing by company size, with Phase 1, which started on Aug 1 last year, covering large businesses with annual sales of over RM100 million. Phase 2, which started on Jan 1, covers companies with sales of between RM25 million and RM100 million. Phase 3 (RM5 million-RM25 million turnover) starts on July 1 and Phase 4 (RM1 million-RM5 million) on Jan 1, 2026. The smallest firms (below RM1 million) will come on board by July 1, 2026. The e-invoicing system, part of the government's plan to improve tax compliance and reduce fraud, is meant to help LHDN keep a better record of business deals and make it easier for taxpayers to fill in their tax forms. E-invoices, which let businesses report sales immediately or on a monthly basis, are sent in real time or in monthly groups. The system can also handle self-billed e-invoices, such as for transactions with foreign suppliers or people who do not run businesses.
