Ghana holds state funeral for helicopter crash victims
Citizens from all walks, including members of parliament, ministers of state, civil servants, and bereaved relatives, participated in the state funeral.
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama said at the funeral that the accident is a disaster that has cast a shadow over the heart of Ghana, bringing a deep, sharp pain that cannot be wished away.
"Ghana has lost leaders whose work touched every corner of our republic, leaders whose service was not measured in days, but in their impact and the lives they touched," the president noted.
Mahama eulogized the deceased, describing them as true patriots who had paid the ultimate price in their line of duty.
The president announced his approval of the posthumous promotion for the three crew members who died alongside the five public servants to their next ranks in the military.
He consoled the families and loved ones of the deceased, assuring them of the country's support for their children in their educational pursuits.
A military helicopter crashed in Ghana's Ashanti Region on Aug. 6, killing all eight occupants, including Defense Minister Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, and Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Cabinet has decided that stern action will be taken against "irresponsible politicians" who incite public sentiment over the upside-down flag incident in Penang, reports said. According to Malaysiakini yesterday, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang said the issue was specifically discussed during the Cabinet meeting on Friday. Chang was quoted as saying that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and other Cabinet members were deeply concerned that the incident could dampen public enthusiasm for the Merdeka Day celebrations. "As such, it was decided that stern action will be taken against these irresponsible politicians. "Someone was already summoned by the police yesterday to give a statement and is now being investigated under three laws. "We will wait and see if any individual will eventually be charged in court," he said. The report said Chang made the remarks during a speech at an event in Klang. Chang also criticised "irresponsible politicians" for stoking sentiments during Merdeka month by exaggerating the upside-down flag incident. He added that he believed no one would deliberately hang the national flag upside down. It was reported that Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh recently had his statement recorded at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters here on Friday over the assembly in Kepala Batas, Penang, last Thursday. His lawyer, Aizat Azam, had said that the Merlimau assemblyman had fully cooperated and answered all some 80 questions posed by the investigating officer. He had also said Dr Akmal is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 506 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Focus on inquest, not speculation, says Sabah leader
KOTA KINABALU: The forthcoming inquest into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir would be pivotal in uncovering the truth, said Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah secretary-general Razali Razi. He said that the focus should remain on the judicial process rather than speculation. "What matters is the inquest. Through the inquest, we will learn the real truth. It will clarify everything," he said after some 1,500 party members attended a tahlil and yasin prayer recital at Wisma Muis here. When asked whether the #JusticeForZara movement could impact the state or federal governments, Razali said both administrations were attentive to the needs and concerns of the people. He also said that Zara's case should not be politicised in the context of Sabah's upcoming state election. "We are not focusing on elections. What matters is what benefits society. Everyone is calling for justice, and we are here to contribute in whatever way we can, not only in terms of justice but also by supporting the wider community," he said. Also present at the event was Science, Technology and Innovation Minister and state religious affairs exco Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif. Zara, 13, was found unconscious at her school, SMKA Tun Mustapha in Papar, on 16 July and was pronounced dead the following day at Queen Elizabeth Hospital here. Her body was later exhumed for a post-mortem. An inquest is expected to be convened soon.

"CPEC has improved connectivity, eased our electricity shortages, and created a large number of jobs and educational opportunities," said Syed, the chairman of the Pakistan-China Institute. by Jiang Chao, Ahmed Raza ISLAMABAD, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- The friendship between Pakistan and China is a model of political trust and enduring cooperation, said Mushahid Hussain Syed, former chairman of the Pakistani senate's defense committee, calling for joint efforts to build a closer Pakistan-China community with a shared future in the new era. Syed, who is also the chairman of the Pakistan-China Institute (PCI), said in a recent exclusive interview with Xinhua that the two countries should seize the opportunities brought about by global political and economic changes to deepen their strategic partnership further. Reflecting on the 74 years of diplomatic ties, Syed said that from the friendship forged by the older generation of leaders, to the construction of the Karakoram Highway, also known as the China-Pakistan Friendship Highway, and the launch of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the two sides have established an unbreakable all-weather strategic cooperative partnership. Launched in 2013, CPEC, a flagship project of the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, is a corridor linking Gwadar Port in Pakistan with Kashgar in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which highlights energy, transport, and industrial cooperation in the first phase, while in the new phase it expands to fields of agriculture and livelihood, among others. Before the launch of CPEC, Pakistan faced security challenges and a lack of foreign investment, the former senator noted. "China was the first to invest in Pakistan, showing firm confidence in our future and enhancing our position on the global investment map," he said. "CPEC has improved connectivity, eased our electricity shortages, and created a large number of jobs and educational opportunities," said the PCI chairman. He pointed out that CPEC has in recent years expanded into agriculture, information technology, green energy and other sectors, boosting development in less-developed areas of Pakistan. "In the Thar Coal Block-II Coal Electricity Integration project, local women can drive dumper trucks to transport coal," Syed said. "The Sukkur-Multan section of the Peshawar-Karachi Motorway has created jobs for tens of thousands of locals, and improved cold chain facilities and road connectivity have benefited the fishing industry in Gwadar." According to him, CPEC is not just about steel and concrete. "It is a people-centered development project," he added. Syed suggested that the two countries deepen cooperation in industrial relocation, critical mineral development, information technology, agriculture, artificial intelligence (AI), and 5G. He also recommended that Pakistan should learn from China's experience in drip irrigation and multiple cropping. "Pakistan has an educated workforce, and China is a global leader in AI, robotics, cloud computing, and green energy," said the former senator. "The potential for cooperation is huge." Looking ahead, Syed said Pakistan should formulate strategies aligned with China's development priorities, particularly in electric vehicles, renewable energy, and addressing climate change. "We must combine technology with efforts to tackle climate challenges and promote green and sustainable development," he said. Speaking about the younger generation, the PCI chairman recalled his first visit to China more than 50 years ago as a student and as head of the Pakistan-China Youth Friendship Association. "That was the beginning of my bond with China," he said. "The China-Pakistan friendship is a unique relationship that has stood the test of time, built on solidarity and mutual trust," Syed said. "China's success story is worth learning from, and the youth of our two countries should work together to build a better future based on peace, development and prosperity."
