"222 people identified so far": Ahmedabad Police Commissioner on AI-171 crash
Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], June 19 (ANI): Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik said on Thursday that 222 people have been identified so far in the Air India 171 crash incident, and their bodies have been handed over to their respective families.
Speaking to the media, Malik said that out of 222, 213 were identified based on DNA samples
'Police also do their part of the investigation, but other agencies and the experts do the technical part, like analysing the black box, and the investigation is underway... 222 people have been identified so far, 214 based on DNA samples and eight were identified without DNA and their bodies have been handed over to their families,' the Ahmedabad Police Commissioner said.
Meanwhile, the mortal remains of the co-pilot of the flight, Clive Kunder, were brought to his residence in Mumbai today.
Visuals from his residence showed a crowd of people gathered at his place while his family stood in front of his portrait and mourned their tragic loss. Kunder lived with his mother and father in the Goregaon (West) area.
On June 12, a London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a hostel complex of BJ Medical College in the Meghani Nagar area of Gujarat's Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The tragedy claimed 241 lives out of 242 onboard, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.
A week after the incident, the Ministry of Civil Aviation released new draft rules to tighten control over structures that pose a risk to aircraft safety.
The draft, titled Aircraft (Demolition of Obstructions) Rules, 2025, was issued on June 18 and will come into force once published in the Official Gazette.
The rules aim to give authorities the power to take prompt action against buildings and trees that exceed height limits in designated aerodrome zones. This is seen as a proactive step to prevent potential accidents caused by obstructions in flight paths. (ANI)

AAIB commences formal inquiry into the Air India flight crash incident
New Delhi [India], June 19 (ANI): The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has commenced a formal inquiry into the Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad and the multi-disciplinary team from AAIB has commenced investigation from June 12, said an official statement from the Ministry of Civil Aviation on Thursday. The investigation has been ordered by DG, AAIB. NTSB and OEM teams have arrived to assist AAIB as per ICAO protocols. A combined unit of the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) has been recovered from the crash site on 13 June 2025 and another set was found on 16 June. This model of aircraft has two Blackbox sets, added the statement. The AAIB investigation is progressing steadily with all necessary support from local authorities and agencies. Key recovery work, including site documentation and evidence collection, has been completed, and further analysis is now underway. The Ministry remains committed to full transparency relating to the ongoing investigation and will follow all mandated protocols and norms, in the larger interest of the highest standards of Passenger Safety and convenience. The Minister emphasised the importance of working together as a cohesive and responsive team to uphold passenger trust and bring operational stability, which has been the cornerstone of Indian aviation. Certain media outlets have reported that the CVR/DFDR from the ill-fated AI171 flight is being sent abroad for retrieval and analysis. The AAIB will decide the location for decoding the flight recorders after assessing all technical, safety, and security considerations, mentioned the official statement. The Ministry of Civil Aviation urged all stakeholders to refrain from speculation on such sensitive matters and to allow the investigative process to proceed with the seriousness and professionalism it warrants. "Criminals fearless in Bihar": Tejashwi Yadav lambasts Nitish Kumar govt on firing incident outside his residence
Patna (Bihar) [India], June 19 (ANI): RJD leader and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav on Thursday lashed out at the Nitish Kumar-led state government over the law and order situation in the state after an incident of firing was reported near his residence in Patna. Hitting out at Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Tejashwi Yadav claimed that the people of the state were not safe alleging a 'crimnal disorder' of the law and order situation and 'anarchy' in Bihar. Yadav said that the criminals in Bihar have become 'fearless' and demanded CM Nitish Kumar's resignation. Speaking to mediapersons here, the RJD leader said, 'There is a complete rule of criminals in place now. There is no government. Anarchy has set in in the administration and government. Shooting is taking place outside my residence in a VVIP area, it had never happened before.' Taking a jab at the Nitish Kumar government, Yadav said, 'Nobody is safe in Bihar. There is a criminal disorder of the law and order in Bihar. Nitish ji forms laws and sets free those with AK-47. He supports criminals.' 'Criminals have become fearless in Bihar, and I am a former Chief Minister, Leader of Opposition in the state assembly, there are residences of the Development Commissioner, many ministers near my residence. The committee, constituted by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna on March 22, concluded that there is credible and serious evidence of misconduct following the discovery of burnt currency at Varma's official residence. The report prepared by a panel comprising Chief Justices Sheel Nagu, GS Sandhawalia, and Justice Anu Sivaraman delivered searing observations about Justice Varma's conduct, suggesting he failed to uphold 'Universally Accepted Values of Judicial Life.' At the heart of the controversy lies the recovery of partially incinerated cash in the early hours of March 15 from a store room in 30 Tughlak Crescent, an official residence under Varma's control. The panel, citing witness statements and electronic surveillance, concluded that 'the burnt currency was removed covertly with active awareness or complicity,' prompting questions about why no formal complaint or disclosure was made by the judge. Further fanning suspicions was the manner of Justice Varma's transfer. Despite having time to seek clarification or raise objections, he promptly accepted the March 20 repatriation order to Allahabad High Court 'without demur,' raising eyebrows within the judicial fraternity. The report remarks that such readiness, absent consultations or queries, is 'uncharacteristic of a judge with a clean record.' The inquiry, supported by testimonies from 55 witnesses, including Justice Varma himself, points to a troubling pattern of omissions and questionable choices.
