AAIB commences formal inquiry into the Air India flight crash incident
New Delhi [India], June 19 (ANI): The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has commenced a formal inquiry into the Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad and the multi-disciplinary team from AAIB has commenced investigation from June 12, said an official statement from the Ministry of Civil Aviation on Thursday.
The investigation has been ordered by DG, AAIB. NTSB and OEM teams have arrived to assist AAIB as per ICAO protocols.
A combined unit of the Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) has been recovered from the crash site on 13 June 2025 and another set was found on 16 June. This model of aircraft has two Blackbox sets, added the statement.
The AAIB investigation is progressing steadily with all necessary support from local authorities and agencies. Key recovery work, including site documentation and evidence collection, has been completed, and further analysis is now underway.
The Ministry remains committed to full transparency relating to the ongoing investigation and will follow all mandated protocols and norms, in the larger interest of the highest standards of Passenger Safety and convenience.
The Minister emphasised the importance of working together as a cohesive and responsive team to uphold passenger trust and bring operational stability, which has been the cornerstone of Indian aviation.
Certain media outlets have reported that the CVR/DFDR from the ill-fated AI171 flight is being sent abroad for retrieval and analysis. The AAIB will decide the location for decoding the flight recorders after assessing all technical, safety, and security considerations, mentioned the official statement.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation urged all stakeholders to refrain from speculation on such sensitive matters and to allow the investigative process to proceed with the seriousness and professionalism it warrants.
The crash occurred on June 12, when a London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a hostel complex of BJ Medical College in the Meghani Nagar area of Gujarat's Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The tragedy claimed 241 lives out of 242 onboard, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. (ANI)

Body of A-I crew member brought to Kangpokpi from Dimapur
The body of Lamnunthem Singson, one of the crew members of the Air India flight which crashed on June 12, arrived late Thursday in Manipur's Kangpokpi district from neighbouring Nagaland's Dimapur airport. Holding candles, people in Kangpokpi town formed a human chain all the way till her residence. Her body was flown from Ahemedabad this afternoon after her DNA sample was matched with one of her three brothers. Lamnunthem's body was supposed to be brought to Imphal airport. The state had made preparations to transport it to Kangpokpi. The Coordination Committee on Manipur's Integrity (COCOCMI), an influential Meitei body, also announced its co-operation for safe transportation of the body. The family, however, chose to bring the body from Dimapur. 'The decision was taken by her family… We want to avoid unnecessary political overtones over our deceased daughter's coffin,' said Ng Lun Kipgen, one of Lamnunthem's uncles. Lamnunthem was one of two crew members who died in the crash. The other was 21-year-old Nganthoi Sharma Kongbrailatpam from Thoubal town.

Singson's mortal remains taken to Kangpokpi through Kohima
Guwahati: The mortal remains of the 26-year-old Kuki girl from Manipur, Lamnunthem Singson, a cabin crew member of the ill-fated Air India Ahmedabad-London flight, arrived at Nagaland's Dimapur airport on Thursday. People from both the Naga and Kuki-Zo communities from both states paid their last respects to her before her body was taken to Kangpokpi through Kohima, detouring Meitei-inhabited areas of Manipur. A cavalcade of 10 vehicles arrived from Manipur's Kangpokpi district after travelling almost seven hours to receive the mortal remains of Singson, which arrived at Dimapur Airport at 1.30pm on Thursday. Singson's internally displaced family, which belongs to the Kuki-Zo community, decided not to take her body to their rented house in Kangpokpi town through Imphal due to the ongoing conflict between Kukis and Meiteis. Tears rolled down the faces of her relatives and members of Kuki-Zo organisations after the coffin was taken out from the flight at Dimapur Airport. Her body was flown from Ahmedabad via Guwahati to Dimapur airport by an Indigo flight, airport officials said. Members of Kuki Union Dimapur, Kuki Nute Kiloikhom Dimapur and Kuki Youth & Students' Union Dimapur, along with Naga leaders, were present at Dimapur Airport to receive the mortal remains of Singson. "Her body was then taken through NH2, where people paid their floral tributes to her during brief halts in Kohima, Senapati, and small Kuki-inhabited villages in Kangpokpi district. We took the responsibility to ensure that her body reaches their Kangpokpi home safely in her last journey," said Thangrijoy Baite, president of Kuki Students' Organisation, Sadar Hills district unit. Singson's brothers and some other family members accompanied the mortal remains from Ahmedabad. At their Kangpokpi home, a crowd was eagerly waiting for the arrival of Singson's body. Her funeral will take place in a public cemetery in Kangpokpi town on Friday. Singson and her internally displaced family fled from their home in Old Lambulane colony in Imphal to Kangpokpi soon after ethnic clashes broke out in Manipur in May 2023. Though the state govt and leading civil society organisation COCOMI assured safe passage to take Singson's mortal remains through Imphal Airport, the family decided to skip Imphal, which was deserted by Kukis after the ethnic clashes broke out. The travel time from Kangpokpi to Imphal is around two-and-a half-hour by road, but Singson's family and Kuki organisations took a much longer route from Dimapur via Nagaland capital Kohima to reach Kangpokpi after travelling about six hours late Thursday evening. Kongbrailatpam Nganthoi Sharma, another cabin crew member from the Meitei community of Manipur, was on the Air India flight that crashed minutes after takeoff from Ahmedabad. Her family has been camping in Ahmedabad since June 13, but the DNA match is yet to be done as of Thursday afternoon, her sister Gitanjali Kongbrailatpam said. "Our wait is getting longer. There is no update on the DNA match," Gitanjali said.

In a post on X, Mumbai Customs shared, 'Based on specific intel, Customs officers at CSMIA, Mumbai Customs Zone-III seized foreign currency of 50000 SAR and diamond weighing 652.20 Dia. Wt. Cts valued Rs 1,70,94,900/- concealed inside handbag and body cavity from pax departing to Dubai. Further investigation underway.' In another incident Customs officers at CSMI Airport, nabbed 2 Indian nationals with 24.96 Kg of hydroponic weed worth Rs 24.96 Crores from Thailand on Wednesday. In a post on X, Mumbai Customs shared, 'In a major drug bust, CSMI Airport, Mumbai Customs Zone-III, on 18.06.25, nabbed 2 Indian nationals with 24.96 Kg of hydroponic weed worth Rs. 24.96Cr from Thailand. Swift follow-up operation resulted in the arrest of intended recipient. Further investigation is underway.' On June 10, officers of the Airport Special Cargo , Mumbai Customs - Zone III, interdicted and seized 489 grams of cocaine, from consignment declared as 'Artificial Flowers & Cards.' Earlier in April, Customs officers of CSMI Airport, Mumbai, seized suspected cocaine worth around Rs 17.89 Crore and one passenger was arrested in the case, according to the press release. 'On April 1, based on spot profiling, one passenger who arrived from Nairobi to Mumbai via Doha was intercepted by the Customs Officers at CSMI Airport. During the detailed examination of the baggage, white coloured powdered substance purported to be Cocaine having a net weight of 1789 Grams approximately valued at Rs 17,89,00,000 was recovered from the false cavity of the trolley bag carried by her. The said passenger was arrested under the Provisions of the NDPS Act, 1985,' said official in a press release. (ANI)
