Death toll in AI plane crash touches 270; Centre forms high-level panel to find causes
Ahmedabad/New Delhi, Jun 14 (PTI) The death toll in the London-bound Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad rose to 270 on Saturday even as the Centre set up a high-level multi-disciplinary panel headed by the Union home secretary to examine the causes that led to the disaster. As investigators pore over wreckage at the BJ Medical College hostel and canteen complex for clues after the crash of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner(AI171) on Thursday, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu said aviation regulator DGCA has ordered "extended surveillance" for the Tata-owned airline's Boeing 787 series planes. In a post on X, Air India said it has done one-time safety checks on nine of its Boeing 787 Dreamliners and is on track to complete the checks on the remaining 24 such planes as directed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation(DGCA).The carrier now has 26 legacy Boeing 787-8s and seven Boeing 787-9s in its fleet. All but one of the 242 passengers and crew on board AI171 and another 29 persons including five MBBS students on the ground were killed when the aircraft came down moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport before falling inside the nearby campus of the state-run BJ Medical College in Meghaninagar area and going up in flames. "Around 270 bodies have been brought to the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital so far from the plane crash site," President of Junior Doctors association of BJ Medical College, Dr Dhaval Gameti, told PTI. The death toll in the country's worst ever air disaster in three decades was earlier put by authorities at 265. As investigators looked into all possible causes for the crash, including loss of thrust in both engines of the 11-year-old aircraft, multiple bird strikes, or a potential flap issue, Naidu told reporters in Delhi that decoding of the Black box is going to give "in-depth insight" into what happened moments before the tragedy. The Digital Flight Data Recorder(DFDR), commonly known as the Black box, was recovered from the "rooftop" of the hostel building at the crash site on Friday. There was no word yet on recovery of another Black box-- the Cockpit Voice Recorder(CVR). This instrument records radio transmissions and other sounds in the cockpit, such as conversations between the pilots and engine noises. Naidu said India has very strict aviation safety standards and robust protocols, and everything will be done to further improve safety. The central panel headed by the Union home secretary will also suggest comprehensive guidelines to prevent incidents like the Ahmedabad crash in the future. It will have its first meeting on Monday. The panel will publish its report in three months, a statement by the Civil Aviation ministry said. The panel will ascertain the root cause of the crash and assess the contributing factors, including mechanical failure, human error, weather conditions, regulatory compliances and other reasons, it said. It will also recommend necessary improvements and formulate suitable Standard Operating Procedures(SOPs) to prevent such incidents in the future. The SOPs would also include best international practices regarding preventing and handling such incidents, the statement said. The ministry said the committee will not be a substitute to other enquiries being conducted by relevant organisations. Chaired by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, the panel has the civil aviation secretary and the additional secretary in the home ministry as members, according to an order dated June 13. Representatives from Gujarat home department, Gujarat disaster response authority, Ahmedabad police commissioner, Indian Air Force's director general of inspection and safety, director generals of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), and Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) are part of the committee. Other members include special director of the Intelligence Bureau and director of the Directorate of Forensic Science Services. According to the statement, any other member, including aviation experts, accident investigators and legal advisors may be included in the committee. The panel will assess emergency response of various stakeholders, including rescue operations, and coordination. According to the statement, the panel will have access to all records, including, among others, flight data, cockpit voice recorders, aircraft maintenance records, ATC (Air Traffic Control) log and witness testimonies. The committee will also collaborate with international agencies if foreign nationals or aircraft manufacturers are involved, Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha said the investigation is going on Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is probing the crash. Before the press conference, a one-minute silence was observed to pay homage to the victims of the crash. The process of identification of victims by matching the DNA samples is currently underway, and the bodies will be handed over to their relatives once the process is complete, Dr Gameti said. Authorities of the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital have so far identified six victims on the basis of the DNA samples and initiated the process to hand over the bodies to the relatives, officials said. Earlier, eight victims, who were identified by their relatives and did not need DNA profiling as their bodies were not damaged, had been handed over to their families by the hospital, they said. Additional Chief Fire Officer Jayesh Khadia said, "Our firemen, who are helping forensic and aviation experts in their ongoing investigation at the crash site, found some body parts from the canteen's rubble on Friday, while a body was found today morning." Apart from central and state government agencies, a team of the National Security Guard (NSG) has also been deployed at the crash site. NSG commandos were seen at the crash site on the hostel building where the tail of the plane got stuck after the crash. Sources said the National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials visited the site on Friday. Fire brigade officials said since the tail fin of the aircraft was stuck on top of the canteen's damaged building, cranes have been roped in to remove it and bring it down. "We will start the work of removing the tail fin from the building and bring it on the ground once Air India officials arrive at the site," Khadia said. Meanwhile, student hostels that suffered damage in the crash are being vacated for a probe by the AAIB and accommodated elsewhere, Minakshi Parikh, the Dean of the B J Medical College said. Supporting Syria's entrepreneurs a regional responsibility
Six months after the fall of the Assad regime, and weeks after the formal lifting of US sanctions, there is now an open door for a potential economic and social revival that could reshape Syria's future. But the path ahead remains fraught with challenges, competing interests and proxy battles — and the question of how Syria rebuilds, and which stakeholders lead that process, is more urgent than ever. At the heart of Syria's recovery is its youth — more than half of the population is under 25, a generation defined by years of conflict and deprivation but also incredible resilience. Traditional employment opportunities have collapsed, pushing many young Syrians to seek alternative livelihoods. Entrepreneurship has become not only a means of survival but a vital response to soaring unemployment and widespread poverty. The entrepreneurial spirit among Syrians is unmistakable. In a survey conducted in 2024 by Ahmad Sufian Bayram, a general partner at Blackbox and advocate for entrepreneurship in conflict zones, more than 80 percent of Syrians described entrepreneurship as 'extremely important.' This is a dramatic rise from just 26 percent in 2015. However, only 3 to 5 percent are actively involved in starting or running businesses — a participation rate well below international norms and one that highlights an enormous gap between ambition and opportunity. Despite these challenges, a remarkable wave of startups has emerged, reflecting the urgent needs of Syrian society. Fintech companies like Cashi are revolutionizing digital payments in a cash-strapped economy. Educational technology firms such as Quizat are expanding access to learning in a country where schools have been devastated. E-commerce platforms like are connecting local merchants with customers, fostering commerce in a fractured market. Entrepreneurship has become not only a means of survival but a vital response to soaring unemployment and widespread poverty Khalid Abdulla-Janahi In addition to these sectors, entrepreneurship in agriculture, healthcare and energy is critical. The destruction of infrastructure has left food security, basic health services and energy supply in urgent need of innovation and investment. Startups addressing these challenges not only create jobs but also lay the groundwork for rebuilding essential services. Yet the obstacles are immense. Syria's economy has shrunk to less than half its preconflict size. Nine out of every 10 Syrians live in poverty and unemployment has tripled since the onset of war. Infrastructure remains severely damaged, regulatory environments are complex and often opaque, and logistics chains are fragile. Most pressingly, international sanctions and funding constraints have severely limited access to capital. Many foreign investors and support organizations are either unable or unwilling to send funds into Syria, choking off growth opportunities for startups and limiting their ability to scale. Although the easing of some EU restrictions in February and the partial lifting of US sanctions have sparked cautious optimism, the financing gap remains vast. While some startups have secured small investments — ranging from $5,000 to $100,000 — these amounts fall far short of the capital required for scaling and sustaining businesses in a difficult environment. In a report titled 'The Impact of the Conflict in Syria' issued in February, the UN Development Programme estimated that Syria's economy would need to grow between 5 and 13.9 percent annually to recover to preconflict levels within a reasonable time frame. At current rates, some projections suggest Syria may not regain its pre-war gross domestic product until well into the latter half of the century. Political instability, fragmented governance and ongoing security risks further complicate the investment landscape and business operations. In this challenging context, grassroots initiatives like startup bootcamps, hackathons and mentorship programs — including organizations such as Sanad ScaleUp and Takween — have been critical in nurturing entrepreneurial talent and fostering resilience. The involvement of the Syrian diaspora and international impact investors is also increasingly being recognized as vital to supporting ecosystem growth. Yet, for the rebuilding effort to be truly sustainable, leadership and investment must come from within the region. While international partners play a valuable role, regional actors have the greatest stake in Syria's success. Efforts led by the Arab world — backed by private capital and focused on creating jobs that strengthen local economies — offer the best chance of sustainable recovery. There are roles for both the private sector and state capital to play, particularly in the case of the Gulf Cooperation Council states that are supporting the interim government. For the rebuilding effort to be truly sustainable, leadership and investment must come from within the region Khalid Abdulla-Janahi While the Gulf states are seeking confidence-building measures, they are also well placed, not only in terms of capital but also in terms of technical assistance, to lend expertise and intellectual capital from their vibrant community of innovators and diverse ecosystem of corporate sponsors, startups and investors who have been developing 'Silicon Wadis' in the Gulf for years. Examples include the Misk Accelerator, the King Abdullah University for Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Center and Flat6Labs in Saudi Arabia, Hub71 in Abu Dhabi, Area 2071 in Dubai and the Fazaa Center for Business Incubators and Accelerators across the UAE, and Tamkeen in Bahrain. The establishment of dedicated funds with sovereign and state-owned companies and the support they can offer can also benefit Syria's entrepreneur cohorts. The Arab world has a responsibility that extends beyond economic opportunity. Supporting Syrian entrepreneurs is a strategic imperative for regional stability and peace. While the sanctions were removed on Syria from the outside, the solutions for the future must come from within both Syria and the wider region. The entrepreneurial generation represents Syria's most promising resource for creating inclusive growth, social cohesion and resilience in a postconflict society. Moreover, entrepreneurship serves as an incubator for responsible leadership and bootstrapping in business. It nurtures individuals who are proactive, adaptable and capable of addressing the complex challenges facing Syria. These qualities are essential for guiding the nation through its next chapter. The future of Syria rests with its next generation — and now is the time for those in positions of leadership across the region to empower them to build that future.

Blackbox Press Event and Regional Government Roundtable
TOKYO, JP / / February 5, 2025 / From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 29, Blackbox held its first in-house media event. We were aiming to start off small, so we were pleasantly surprised with the turnout - thank you to all the press and ecosystem representatives who made the time to come by. It being our first event, we began by explaining Blackbox's mission statement and the social context that led to our launch. General Manager Taiki Iwasaki talked about the growing support for startups - especially foreign startups - in Japan over the last few years. We are now roughly midway through previous PM Kishida's five-year Startup Development plan, and the landscape is indeed changing. Currently over 700 Startup Visas have been issued, with well over half of them maturing to full-time Business Management Visas. And yet there remains the issue of Japan being a black box to outsiders, especially within the business sphere. Even information exclusively intended for non-Japanese - for example, the application process for a startup visa - is often only available in Japanese, and often fragmented and buried on various regional government websites. This is what Blackbox seeks to address; via Directory pages for each featured city, users can find information about visas, government support programs, local organisations, news, and interviews with local entrepreneurs, all in English. Startup City ProjectWe were also happy to welcome Toru Udagawa, representative of the Cabinet Office's Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy, who gave a presentation on the government's roadmap for further developing Japan's startup ecosystem. The startup phase is of course very exciting, but how will a healthy startup ecosystem mature into an economic engine contributing to Japan's future, and what support structures and tools need to be in place to help it do so? Roundtable With Regional DelegatesThe highlight of the afternoon was a roundtable discussion with representatives from Shibuya, Nagoya, Kobe, Kyoto, and Sapporo - all cities within Special Economic Zones that offer startup visas. It was fascinating to hear how the different cultural and historical backgrounds of the different areas have affected the startup scenes there, as well as their designs for the future. Nagoya, with its long history of heavy industry and manufacturing, is keen to expand into global hubs such as the U.S., Europe, and Singapore, while the port town of Kobe emphasises collaboration within Japan and the immediate area, like Taiwan and Korea. Shibuya's place as a premier world destination sees it making efforts towards attracting foreign capital and VCs, while Hokkaido's rich quality of life acts as a strong force in attracting human resources. Overall, a brilliant insight into the strengths of the different regions. Thank YouBlackbox recently celebrated its second year of operations, and we're constantly growing and devising new ways to demystify the startup scene in Japan. If you're interested in joining our enthusiastic community, don't hesitate to check us out here.
