NEW DELHI: The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) will decide whether to send the black boxes — cockpit voice and flight data records — of the ill-fated Boeing 787 that crashed as AI 171 last Thursday abroad for analysis.
'The decision regarding location for decoding the flight recorders will be taken by AAIB after due assessment of all technical, safety, and security considerations,' a govt statement said Thursday.
'A multi-disciplinary team from AAIB has commenced investigation (into AI 171 crash) from June 12. The investigation has been ordered by DG, AAIB. US National Transportation Safety Board and original equipment manufacturer (like Boeing, GE) teams have arrived to assist AAIB as per ICAO protocols.
A combined unit of the digital flight data recorder (DFDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR) was recovered from the crash site on June 13 and another set was found on June 16.
This model of aircraft has two Blackbox sets,' The govt statement said.
Meanwhile, Union aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu Thursday held a meeting to review ground-level preparedness and passenger support mechanisms because of rescheduling of flights happening due to multiple reasons like post-accident checks, weather changes, closing of certain airspaces due to geopolitical tensions etc.

Guj plans memorial at AI 171 crash site

Gandhinagar: In a poignant gesture, the state govt has taken an in-principle decision to set up a memorial at the site where Air India flight number 171 crashed shortly after take-off, killing 241 of the 242 persons on board and others on the ground. The plane crashed into the residential quarters and mess for UG, PG students of BJ Medical College here on June 12. According to top sources in the state govt, buildings on which the ill-fated plane crashed will be demolished and constructed elsewhere, most probably at another location in the same campus. A memorial will be set up on the area where the plane crashed, so that people can visit the spot and pay their respects to those who perished in the tragedy. "Currently, multiple investigation teams are working at the crash site to gather evidence and materials. Once the investigation at the crash site is completely over, the buildings on which the plane crashed will be demolished and a memorial is being planned at the site," a top source informed. Sources said that although the buildings on which the plane crashed do not appear to have been severely damaged, there is a possibility that they might have been internally damaged and weakened. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "We are also taking into consideration the sentiments of the students who may be too traumatised to occupy the same premises," said sources. The state health department will prepare a detailed project to identify alternative land where the damaged buildings will be reconstructed. "Primarily, the govt is considering the option of reconstructing the damaged buildings at another site on the same campus, as there is ample space there," said a source. Commenting on the proposed air crash memorial, sources said that a serene garden will be created, where visitors can offer prayers and pay obeisance to the victims. "The details of the memorial project will be decided later as currently, the authorities are busy dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy. There is a possibility that like Smritivan in Bhuj, the names of all the victims of the airplane crash will be written at the memorial as a remembrance," said sources. On June 12, a London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a hostel complex of BJ Medical College in Meghaninagar area, moments after takeoff from the Ahmedabad airport. The tragedy claimed 241 lives out of 242 onboard, including former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, and several persons were killed on the ground where it crashed.

Hazaripahad Rd turns into garbage dumping stretch

1 2 3 Nagpur: As rapid urbanisation spreads to the city's outskirts, Hazaripahad Road — once a clean, quiet stretch — has turned into a garbage dumping ground. With new townships and housing societies mushrooming in the area, vacant plots along the roadside have become hotspots for garbage disposal. Residents say construction debris, plastic waste, and household trash are being dumped regularly in open plots, posing health concerns. Open waste attracts stray animals, emits foul odour, and has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, raising fears of a potential dengue or malaria outbreak. "Every morning, we wake up to a stinking mess. People from nearby buildings just toss their trash over the wall. We've complained multiple times, but no one acts," said Neeta Kale, a resident of one of the newly developed societies in the area. Another resident, Ashfaq Mirza, who moved in six months ago, said what should have been a green patch near his building is now a mountain of rubble and waste. "We were promised a clean and peaceful neighbourhood. What we got instead is a dumping yard that no authority seems to care about. Children can't even play outside," he added. Responding to the growing outrage, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has begun taking action. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sector 36 Gets a Sobha Makeover – Are You Ready to Upgrade? "These were identified after an intensive, multi-week citywide survey. We have already cleared the first 40 sites, and a phased clean-up of the rest is currently underway," he stated. The civic body has also begun cracking down on unregistered and non-compliant garbage collectors. "Eighty such irregular collectors were caught during the drive and fined RS1,000 each. Many of them were found to be dumping waste at unauthorised spots instead of taking it to designated collection points," Bhagat said. Residents, however, remain skeptical. "We've heard promises before. Unless fines are strictly enforced and pick-up is regular, this problem will keep returning," said Nilesh Zade, a long-time local. While NMC's efforts mark a positive step, the success of the clean-up drive will depend on consistent enforcement and public cooperation.

Over 900 Families in Wathoda PMAY Flats Living in Fear of Electrocution, Water Woes

1 2 Nagpur: Over 900 families residing in the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) housing scheme at Khasra No. 62 in Wathoda are living in fear as monsoon approaches. Residents claim multiple civic and electrical issues have plagued the 24-building, 942-flat complex since they moved in between 2020 and 2021. Developed by Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) under the central government's PMAY scheme, the project was meant to offer affordable housing. However, residents allege poor construction quality, unsafe electrical fittings, water shortages, and lack of drainage pose serious risks. "During rains, current passes through the walls. Several residents, including children, have received minor shocks, and many of our appliances have been damaged. The entire wiring is substandard," said Vinod Mohagaokar, a resident. Each flat costs Rs9.15 lakh, with Rs2.5 lakh provided as subsidy under PMAY. "The rest we paid via loans at high interest. NIT also collected Rs25,000 per home as lifetime maintenance, but the conditions here are unsafe," said another resident. Residents said transformers have been installed dangerously close to the buildings, and the solar panels installed have become defunct after reportedly causing electrical backflow. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Live Comfortably: 60 m² Prefab Bungalow for Seniors in Shibin Elkom Pre Fabricated Homes | Search Ads Search Now Undo "Technicians backchannelled the connection after complaints, but since then, the panels are non-functional," a resident added. Water availability is another major concern. "There are wells, but they don't suffice in summer. Tankers are our only source. During monsoon, the drainage system fails and the entire area floods," said a resident. They also pointed out the absence of functional streetlights both inside and outside the premises. "We are forced to walk with torches at night. We want NIT to fix these issues before pushing us to form a housing society. Living here has become a nightmare," Mohagaokar added. Responding to the complaints, a senior NIT official said the agency has repeatedly asked residents to form a housing society to take over maintenance. "We are a development authority. Our role is to hand over the scheme and its funds to the society. Until then, we are using those funds to manage basic maintenance. Specific complaints will be addressed, but for long-term resolution, a registered society is necessary," the official said.
