Princes Street will be 'major priority' for tourist tax fund

Princes Street will be 'major priority' for tourist tax fund

The 5% tax on overnight stays, capped at five nights, will apply to bookings from 24 July 2026. Hotels, B&Bs, hostels and holiday rentals will need to apply the charge to advance bookings on or after this date from the start of October this year.
It's estimated that, once established, the UK's first mandatory city-wide scheme will raise up to £50 million a year to "invest in protecting, supporting and enhancing Edinburgh's worldwide appeal as a place to live and visit," according to the council.
Read more stories from our series investigating the Future of Edinburgh:
Projects the funding is expected to support include new public toilets, improvements to parks and greenspaces, affordable housebuilding, graffiti removal and installation of underground bins. Of the total annual funds generated 2% will be set aside for three improvement projects a year in the city's most deprived communities, with ideas put to local residents in a public vote. A further 2% will be reimbursed to accommodation providers 'to off-set the administrative cost incurred from operating'.
Many of Princes Street's run-down buildings are currently undergoing major transformations, including the redevelopment of the former Jenners and Debenhams department stores as a hotels, showing a revitalisation is already well underway.
However for many there remains a glaring need for public realm improvements along the length of the throughfare, with its broken, uneven paving, grime, and an aging streetscape which often contribute to an unpleasant pedestrian experience.
Cllr Meagher said: "Edinburgh is one of the easiest places to walk around as opposed to any other way of getting around the city, but there's no doubt the pavements on Princes Street are in a shocking state.
Princes Street, Edinburgh (Image: Colin Mearns) "That £50m anticipated from the visitor levy has been spent many, many times over in people's imaginations.
"But I think it would be hard not to justify something to be done on Princes Street on things like improved lighting.
"I would definitely anticipate that Princes Street would be a major priority. Everybody wants to see that fantastic view of the castle and the skyline and it's truly remarkable.
"Princes Street on the retail side at the moment is in the process - and I know it's slow inevitably - of changing into a street where folk would be lingering over coffees and meals. And we need a public realm that goes with that.'
A revamp of Princes Street will be included in a "menu" of choices for the first round of TVL investment being put to councillors later in the year.

But Edinburgh Council's chief executive, Paul Lawrence stressed officers will be looking for "a balance between the city centre and other parts of the city in the visitor levy proposals".
He told The Herald: "If we say it should all be spent on one square mile we know what the political reaction would be.
"What we are working on is basically everything we have heard from communities and elected members and others over the years to go 'what does a balanced package of investment look like?' so we can hopefully get political support for that later in the year.
"Whether members want to spend the money on paving Princes Street or somewhere else, we will put forward a menu of choices forward later in the year."

Once-thriving Debenhams store loved in the 90s to be transformed into cinema, gym & hundreds of homes

A DEBENHAMS that was once a bustling shopping hub is set to be transformed into a co-living space. The former store is set to be demolished and replaced by a ten-storey block with a cinema, gym and podcast studio. 2 Similar to student halls, the plan submitted to Chelmsford City Council envisages 181 single-occupancy rooms. If approved, each room will have a bed, kitchenette and an ensuite bathroom. They will also have a wardrobe, desk and storage. The communal spaces will contain facilities like a lounge, co-working space, event space, a gym, cinema and podcast studio. The shared areas will be available to the public on an invite-only basis. The vision for the development is to provide young professionals with affordable living spaces. Co-living housing is a new concept that is defined by a large-scale purpose-built shared accommodation. In cities, there has been a rise in single people and couples living in warehouses and large disused buildings for cheap rent. Savills have said that co-living schemes are a way to tackle the cripling housing crisis by "offering shared affordable, high quality accommodation, predominantly for 18 to 40-year-olds, with fully furnished private living units, communal areas and often flexible working space'. A planning statement said: 'The site sits in a primary location within the Chelmsford City Centre, opposite the River Chelmer and within walking distance to Chelmsford High Street, and to both Chelmsford train station and bus station. It was formerly in use as the servicing block to the adjacent Debenhams department store. "However, it is now redundant with limited scope for it to be brought back into use for retail servicing. "On this basis, it presents as a highly sustainable brownfield site with substantial scope to enhance and contribute towards the wider strategic goals of Chelmsford." This comes after another former Debenhams was given a new lease of life as an entertainment venue. After the business went into administration in 2020, hundreds of the huge department stores were left empty on UK high streets. Now, one of the abandoned stores has been completely transformed into the ultimate entertainment space. The Debenhams in Midsummer Place, Milton Keynes has been revamped by entertainment company Lane 7. The 40,000 square foot space has been kitted out with a bowling alley, roller skating rink, golf simulators, bumper cars, pool tables and a gaming experience. Lane 7's Luke Harvey said: "The culture of what people want from their nights out has changed a lot recently, the shift from being a drinking culture has stopped a little bit, especially for 18-24 year olds. "People want a little more from their nights out; they don't necessarily want to go to a nightclub anymore. "They want something fun and something they can do with a range of different friends and families." Since opening in March, the venue has seen about 2,300 visitors on its busiest days which are usually Friday nights and evenings. The entertainment company has taken over the ground floor, while Sports Direct occupies the upper floors. Although shoppers can still buy from Debenhams online, all of its 124 beloved high street stores closed down because of falling profits and rising debt. The financial problems were triggered by a combination of consumers moving online, as well as Covid lockdowns which stalled profits. Across the country, councils and developers have been repurposing former Debenhams stores. One in Northampton was demolished and replaced by student housing in October 2024, a fate that will follow for the two other stores left in the city. 2

Adds interest and a good focal point in my hallway. Easy to hang and a nice size. Very pleased." With another five-star reviewer adding on: "Gorgeous mirror, so pretty and unusual. A really good size too. Perfect for our bedroom." However, not everyone was pleased with the mirror, as one person commented: "The mirror looks great in my hallway, I'm a bit disappointed because the coloured pieces are not as bright as in the picture and it is hanging on a white wall, but it's still nice." A three-star reviewer also wrote: "The mirror as a whole looks lovely on the wall. However, Dunelm needs to improve its quality checks on their products. The mirror I received has one heart upside down and two others misaligned. Not too impressed. I'll be contacting them regarding this." On the flip side, another happy shopper said: "Absolutely beautiful mirror. I'm really pleased with it and I'm so glad I got this one. Well worth the money. Highly recommend this mirror it has transform my hallway just how I wanted it." With a sixth shopper noting: "Love this on my white wall in bedroom. Good value as reasonably priced. Shoppers 'love' Debenhams £2,500 watch slashed down to £300 in sale

'Hands down my favorite daily wear.' A watch is a staple piece of everyone's accessory collection as it can be both practical and elegant. While many people seem to favour a smart watch for everyday wear, due to its step tracking features and notifications, many of us still reach for a traditional analogue watch for a social event. Now while traditional watches can be expensive if you are looking for a higher quality, Debenhams has done us all a favour by giving a variety of luxury timepieces major discounts - some getting drops as big as 80 and 90 per cent. One such watch included in the sale is the STÜHRLING Original Radiance Diver Watch. Normally retailing for a whopping £2,495, shoppers can now grab this watch for £300, saving shoppers over £2,100 on their purchase. The timeless Radiance Watch is said to make 'just enough of a statement' as it features an elegant profile and a rich dial that 'pops'. With a rotating bezel and bold lugs, this watch is said to speak to those with a 'masculine and adventurous sense of style'. Powered by a Swiss automatic movement to keep its wearer on track, the watch also boasts a well-placed day of the month window at the three o'clock hour marker. For extra reliability, this watch also features a screw-down crown for an air-tight and sleek seal. Completed with an oyster-style stainless steel bracelet, this watch also boasts a water resistance of 200m, making it the prime timepiece to take on your next adventure. Shoppers have the choice of a black dial with either a black or blue bezel, but it should be noted that at the time of writing there were only eight of the blue edition left in stock. STÜHRLING Original Radiance Diver Watch £2,495 £300 Debenhams Buy now Product Description For those looking for something a bit cheaper, Debenhams has also slashed the price of the STÜHRLING Original Forte 3953 Quartz Watch. Usually retailing for £570, watch lovers can now snap up either the blue or black dialled editions of this watch for £74.25. Over on Beaverbrooks, shoppers can snap up the BOSS Tyler 43mm Stainless Steel Men's Watch for £40 less. Normally retailing for £199, shoppers can either buy the all-black edition or the blue dial and silver bracelet watch for £159. Back to the Radiance Watch, it currently doesn't have any reviews on the Debenhams website. However, it has been able to garner a near perfect rating over on the Stuhrling website. One happy five-star reviewer simply wrote: "Love this watch! Hands down my favorite daily wear." With another shopper adding: "Happy owner. Very satisfied owner of three time pieces. When I put them on, I feel great." However, one shopper left a three-star review, writing: "I am 50 years old and I have always liked watches. I have looked for a good watch that is consistent to my daily life and I know that I don't look good with a Rolex presiding. "So surfing the internet I found your brand and they seemed very well made and I said to myself, it's made in Switzerland, okay, I decided to buy it, it was easy. Fast, no. The shipment was delayed but when it arrived we opened the box with my son, and what a disappointment we were with the finishes of the watch. "I am talking about what it looks like aesthetically without talking about its movement, the disproportion of the size of the case with the bracelet, but the chrome and brushing of the case looks good." Despite this, the rest of the shoppers were highly complimentary, as one person said: "Simply the finest watch you will find at this price point, and on par with many watches at twice the price." A fifth shopper also praised: "I have to say that the quality of this watch is amazing. It's sturdy, has the right amount of shine, the movement is absolutely perfect, it feels good, balanced weight, and most impressively is the bezel and dials which glow. "I mean, I've never been happier with my purchase. This watch is special and makes me feel special. I highly recommend this if you're looking for a quality watch for yourself or as a gift."
