NAS Has Potential To Generate RM2 Bln, Create 2,000 Jobs
He said the focus of NAS, which is being developed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), is to ensure that every address in the country can be identified and verified using accurate standards, and can be utilised by various agencies, services and businesses.
Although Malaysia is estimated to have around 12 million addresses, no single entity has comprehensive coverage. Most agencies that store address data have information that is non-standardised, unverified and decentralised, he said.
Speaking when opening the National Address Conference 2025 today, he said the implementation of NAS is expected to bring tangible benefits to Malaysians, adding that in cases of floods or fires, rescue teams will be able to locate victims more quickly and accurately.
'NAS can strengthen location-based sectors such as e-commerce, logistics and courier services. With precise addresses and coordinates for each destination, deliveries can be made more quickly and efficiently, while reducing the risk of misdeliveries.
'NAS is not only aimed at solving current challenges, but is also expected to bring significant socioeconomic spillover effects, including increased productivity, job creation and enhanced national competitiveness,' he said. Also present were his deputy, Teo Nie Ching, and Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa.
He said NAS is an authoritative, standardised and centralised system that compiles address data in a uniform manner based on Malaysian Standards Department guidelines. Each address will be geocoded and assigned a unique location identifier to ensure consistency, accuracy and interoperability.
'Government agencies and departments can reduce duplication issues and improve address verification, allowing for more accurate service delivery to the public. Although the current estimate is 12 million addresses, this number is expected to grow over time,' he said.
He added that the lack of centralised and comprehensive address data hinders the country's progress toward becoming a digitally competitive nation.

Apple Announces ‘American Manufacturing Program', Adds US$100 Billion Investment
Apple CEO Tim Cook stands, as he along with US President Donald Trump (not pictured) present Apple's announcement of a $100 billion investment in US manufacturing, in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., August 6, 2025. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst ISTANBUL, Aug 7 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- US tech giant Apple on Wednesday announced an additional US$100 billion investment in domestic production, bringing its total planned investment in the country to US$600 billion over the next four years, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. The package includes a US$2.5 billion commitment to produce all cover glass for the iPhone and Apple Watch at Corning's manufacturing facility in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, Apple said in a statement. 'For the first time ever, every single new iPhone and every single new Apple Watch sold anywhere in the world will contain cover glass made in Kentucky,' said Apple CEO Tim Cook at the White House. bootstrap slideshow Cook noted that Apple had already committed US$500 billion earlier this year to strengthen US manufacturing and that the investment was delivering results. 'We broke ground on a new factory in Houston to make advanced AI servers. Last month, the very first test unit rolled off that factory's line, proudly made in America,' he said. As part of the new commitment, Apple is launching the American Manufacturing Programme, which Cook said will increase production of critical components in the US. The company has signed new agreements with 10 American firms. Apple is also working to build a full silicon supply chain within the US, from design to packaging, in partnership with various companies. Cook highlighted Apple's role in bringing Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to Arizona, where it now produces tens of millions of chips for Apple.

Ringgit opens firmer on softer US$, rate cut hopes
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened firmer against the US dollar on Thursday, lifted by a softer greenback amid growing expectations of interest rate cuts by the United States Federal Reserve (Fed) in the coming months. At 8 am, the local note climbed to 4.2185/2260 against the greenback from Wednesday's close of 4.2235/2305. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said recent comments by Fed officials signalled that policy adjustments may be needed to address labour market weakness, reinforcing hopes of a rate cut at the next Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. He noted that the upcoming FOMC meeting, scheduled for September 16-17, is expected to see the Fed Funds Rate lowered by 25 basis points. "This would likely be ringgit-positive, as a Fed rate cut would narrow the interest rate differential with the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR). "In light of current market conditions, the ringgit is expected to trade between 4.21 and 4.22 against the US dollar today,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, the ringgit was mostly lower against a basket of major and regional currencies in early trade. It slipped against the Japanese yen to 2.8654/8707 from 2.8570/8619 on Wednesday, weakened versus the British pound to 5.6342/6442 from 5.6160/6253, and declined against the euro to 4.9192/9279 from 4.8929/9010. The local unit also fell against the Singapore dollar to 3.2824/2885 from 3.2806/2863 and depreciated vis-à-vis the Thai baht to 13.0402/0715 from 13.0291/0567. Conversely, the ringgit strengthened against the Philippine peso to 7.33/7.35 from 7.34/7.36 and firmed versus the Indonesian rupiah to 257.8/258.4 from 258.1/258.6. - Bernama

Anwar wants MCMC to investigate Muhyiddin's denial of defending foreigners in RON95 subsidy issue
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 7 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has instructed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to investigate Pagoh Member of Parliament Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's denial regarding allegations that he defended the rights of foreigners in the issue of RON95 subsidy targeting. The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) stated today that Anwar has also ordered appropriate action to be taken in this matter. 'The Prime Minister's Office has taken note of the denial statement by the Pagoh Member of Parliament regarding the allegation of defending the rights of foreigners in the issue of RON95 subsidy targeting. 'As a government that upholds transparency and accountability, the Prime Minister has instructed MCMC to investigate this matter and take appropriate action,' the statement said. Yesterday, Anwar was reported in the Dewan Rakyat to have said that he received a report that an opposition Member of Parliament had defended the right of foreigners to benefit from subsidy rationalisation. Following this, Muhyiddin, who is also a former Prime Minister, denied in a social media post that he had ever made any statement defending the rights of foreigners in the targeting of the RON95 subsidy. He said that Perikatan Nasional (PN) has always been consistent that the benefits of subsidy implementation should prioritise the interests of the people. Meanwhile, in a separate statement, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it has taken note of the matter and will take immediate and appropriate action based on existing legal provisions. 'The MCMC reminds the public not to misuse social media platforms to spread any unverified content,' the statement said. — Bernama
