, the 75-year-old chairman, wondered aloud in a TV interview after announcing the sale. 'The younger generation is not interested in management.'
Piramal isn't the only aging businessperson to have run out of successors: 'Today among the scions of some of the most affluent families of India, someone is an artist, someone wants to be a sportsman, someone wants to run a small restaurant. There's nothing wrong in that. It's the modern trend, people want to do their own things.'
Two hundred years ago, that 'modern' trend among young people used to be enterprise. That's when families like Piramal's began to spread out of the Marwar region in land-locked northern India to take advantage of British-controlled trading opportunities in the port cities of Bombay and Calcutta — now Mumbai and Kolkata. Cotton, jute, and opium sold to China provided the seed capital to the Marwari business community for everything from textile mills to cement factories.
By the early 20th century, these emerging industrial empires were large enough to challenge the colonial masters and their commercial interests. The likes of Ghanshyam Das Birla openly supported Mahatma Gandhi's campaign for independence, even as they outran rivals like Andrew Yule & Co. The Birla House in Delhi, a prominent hub for the freedom movement, was also where Gandhi was assassinated. As the sway of family firms continued after India's 1947 independence, it was believed that newer generations would always be available to take over the reins.
Below the surface, however, the link between ownership and management has been weakening for some time. Piramal's daughter, Radhika, a Harvard University MBA, was the chief executive officer for a few years before quitting in 2017 and relocating with her spouse to London. Her same-sex marriage is not legally recognized in India. The luggage maker was back to being in the care of professional managers, a double-edged sword considering that a rival firm set up by a former managing director is now three-fifths bigger than VIP by market value.

— are setting their own life goals. It's the sensible thing to do. In a labor-surplus economy, access to capital through clan networks and strategic marital alliances was family-run firms' core advantage. But via public markets and private equity, finance is now available to a much wider section of entrepreneurs. Risk-taking has been democratized.
That frees up younger members of business dynasties to try new things. Someone recently asked the singer-songwriter

on social media if she was from the family behind India's largest-selling cement brand. She is indeed the great-great-granddaughter of Ghanshyam Das Birla. But from financial inclusion among rural women to a recently launched beauty brand, the 31-year-old Oxford graduate has her own interests that are independent of the sprawling commodities behemoth led by her father.
Though they're from Tamil Nadu in southern India, and not Marwar in Rajasthan, it's the same for philanthropist Roshni Nadar Malhotra, the chair of HCL Technologies Ltd., a $48 billion outsourcing powerhouse founded by her dad. He gifted her the family's controlling stake in March. Running the tech firm's day-to-day operations is someone else's job. Nadar is passionate about wildlife conservation, among other things.
Piramal is retaining 20% of VIP. But that's just a financial investment in a publicly traded security. He'll pare it down. Owners of unlisted firms are proceeding more slowly. A few months ago, the family behind Haldiram's, a 90-year-old Indian snacks brand, parted with a minority stake to Singapore's Temasek Holdings Pte and other global investors. Media reports put the firm's valuation at $10 billion.
A scenario where India's business elite is basically a bunch of rich financiers, living off accumulated wealth, doesn't appeal to everyone. 'What concerns me is that many in this generation are taking the easy way out, especially in the post-Covid world,' says billionaire

, who retired two years ago as managing director of Kotak Mahindra Bank, which he founded in the 1980s as a finance company. 'They claim to be managing family offices and investments, trading in the stock market, allocating funds to mutual funds, and treating it as a full-time job.'
But they are probably just smart to realize that they're sandwiched. On one hand, access to capital is no longer their abiding advantage. On the other, real economic power is concentrating in fewer hands. Viral Acharya, a former central bank deputy governor, has shown in his research that India's top five nonfinancial groups have expanded their share of total assets by 8 percentage points in 30 years, whereas the next five business groups' sway has shrunk by roughly the same amount.
From cement, steel, autos, power, and paints to retail, telecom, media, finance, and aviation, a handful of powerful conglomerates are pouncing on every new opportunity. No wonder the successors of tycoons like Mukesh Ambani, Gautam Adani and Sajjan Jindal are closely involved in management. Children from middling business families probably don't see the point of entering a new field only to see it being disrupted by a startup — or dominated by a bigger player.
Many more Indian assets will change hands as their family owners ultimately lose interest in tending to them. In heading for the exit, Piramal, the luggage maker, has given a good indication of the direction of travel.

Amid clean energy push, India a green flag for climate investors
India is rapidly emerging as a key destination for climate capital, driven by rising demand for clean electric alternatives and a growing push from heavy industries towards zero-emission technologies. The country has attracted more than $2 billion in climate-focused capital over the past year alone, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) data. Over the past 8–12 months, major climate investors such as TPG Rise Climate, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, LeapFrog Investments, Lowercarbon Capital, and Fullerton Fund Management have moved beyond cautious pilot projects to make strategic bets in India's energy and clean tech sectors. This influx of climate funding is fuelled not only by environmental urgency, but also by a confluence of favourable factors: cost parity with traditional energy sources, inflection in consumer demand, and supportive policy frameworks. India's clean energy demand is increasingly being powered by essential services — including logistics, cooling, and distributed power — rather than discretionary consumption. This shift provides investors with confidence in both long-term scalability and durable margins, say industry experts. 'There's been a marked uptick in growth and infrastructure capital doubling down on platform plays across circularity, e-mobility, OEMs, battery lifecycle management and energy storage,' said Nakul Zaveri, partner and co-head of Climate Investment Strategy at LeapFrog Investments, which plans to commit over $500 million to climate solutions. A key part of this strategy includes a $60 million investment by the European Investment Bank (EIB), with additional backing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Temasek. Globally, climate finance surpassed $2 trillion in 2024, with a significant portion of private capital flowing into electric mobility, battery storage, and green infrastructure. Singapore-based Fullerton Fund Management recently made its first investment under the Fullerton Carbon Action Fund, acquiring an equity stake in Routematic, an AI-driven corporate transport company in India. 'Climate finance in India is poised for a surge, increasingly driven by market economics,' reckons Akhil Jain, investment lead at Fullerton Carbon Action Fund. 'Clean energy and key segments of electric transport are now at or beyond cost parity with conventional options.' This shift is reshaping investment patterns. Funds are increasingly focused on companies with strong revenue models and proprietary technology. 'There's surging demand for low-emission, resource-efficient technologies, especially in sectors like transport and energy,' said Shailesh Vickram Singh, founder of Climate Angels, which has backed 22 startups in the EV, clean air, and climate tech space over the past two to three years. Rather than backing isolated innovations, investors are now prioritising integrated operators who can build full value chains and deliver resilient, scalable infrastructure solutions. 'What was once seen as high-risk is now attracting a premium, especially for operators executing climate strategies at scale,' said Zaveri. This evolution also reflects a broader recognition of the importance of embedding adaptation into climate solutions. 'Capital is now flowing towards companies that reduce emissions and also build resilience — across sectors like waste, cooling, and mobility,' noted Vasudha Madhavan, founder & CEO of Ostara Advisors, an investment bank focused on electric mobility. Industry leaders see this as an inflection point. Over the next 2–3 years, climate finance in India is expected to deepen its focus on scalable technologies with the potential to transform high-emission sectors. 'This is a pivotal moment,' Madhavan added. 'Climate finance is shifting from small, fragmented bets to strategic, high-value investments that can accelerate the clean transition at scale.'

ED makes first arrest in loan fraud case linked to Anil Ambani
New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) late Friday evening arrested the managing director of an Odisha-based company - its first arrest in an alleged bank loan fraud case involving the Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (ADAG). Partha Sarathi Biswal, MD of Biswal Tradelink Pvt Ltd (BTPL), is accused of arranging a fake bank guarantee of ₹68 crore for an ADAG firm. According to the ED, its investigation has revealed that BTPL fraudulently arranged and submitted the fake bank guarantee along with forged SBI endorsements and fabricated confirmations on behalf of Reliance Nu Bess Ltd for a tender floated by Solar Energy Corporation of India Ltd (SECI). For this, BTPL received ₹5.40 crore from Reliance Nu Bess' parent, Reliance Power Ltd, ED has ED carried out searches against Biswal Tradelink on Friday. Agency sources said the evidence gathered by ED confirmed the use of fake documents in the name of certain banks and fake email IDs in the name of SBI."Probe reveals BTPL, a small company incorporated in 2019, maintained multiple undisclosed bank accounts and carried out transactions disproportionate to its declared turnover. Many violations of the Companies Act are found," the probe agency said in a news release on Saturday. Statutory records such as books of accounts and shareholders' registers were not found at the registered address, it said, adding: " Dummy directors are found to be used just to sign the documents."At least seven undisclosed bank accounts of the company were found and "proceeds of crime, of crores of rupees, have been traced to these accounts", it claimed. Biswal was produced before a Delhi court, which sent him to ED's custody till August 6. ET was the first to report on Friday that the ED had summoned Anil Ambani for questioning in connection with its investigation into the ₹17,000 crore alleged loan fraud case. Ambani has been asked to appear before the agency on August 5. According to the Enforcement Directorat, Biswal Tradelink ran a racket that issued fake bank guarantees to business groups. As per the agency, the Delhi Police filed the first information report in the case based on a Reliance Nu Bess company, accusing Biswal Tradelink of cheating it by promising to arrange bank guarantees for a fee and then providing a fake bank guarantee. According to the ED, Reliance Nu Bess wrongly claimed that it was cheated. "Documentary evidence reveals that apparently the two parties acted in collusion. The directors of Biswal Tradelink were found to be previous directors of Reliance group," a senior official had told ET.A statement issued by the Reliance Group on Friday said: "The company and its subsidiaries acted bonafidely and have been a victim of fraud, forgery and cheating conspiracy. The company has made due disclosure on this to the stock exchanges on November 7, 2024," it further said "a criminal complaint in this regard has already been lodged with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police against the third party on October 16, 2024" and that the "due process of law will follow".
