Death of family of four: Trailer driver gets 8 years' jail
TAIPING: A trailer driver was sentenced to eight years in prison and fined RM80,000 by the High Court here today after he was found guilty of dangerous driving that caused the deaths of four members of a family in an accident in Sungai Siput five years ago.
Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin dismissed the appeal by Y Vethri Vel, 31, and imposed eight years in jail and an RM20,000 fine for each of the amended charges. The sentences are to run concurrently from June 13, with an additional three months' jail if he fails to pay the fine.
He is also disqualified from getting a driver's licence for three years from the conviction date, and the details of the conviction must be recorded on his driving licence.
The father of two was found guilty on four amended charges under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) for driving recklessly, resulting in the death of Mohamad Faiz Bakhari, 28 and his wife, Nik Iedayu Nik Hassan, 30, the couple's baby Muhammad Faqih Irsyad, 16 months and Nike Iedayu's sister Nik Ifeka Nik Hassan, 27, at Kilometre 37 of the Ipoh-Kuala Kangsar Road at around 10.20 pm on Feb 13, 2020.
On Dec 14, 2023, the Sungai Siput Magistrate's Court found Vethri Vel guilty under Section 44(1)(b) of the same Act for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, resulting in death.
The charges were amended to Section 41 (1) of the Act after the High Court found reasonable doubt regarding the accused's blood sample, as raised by the defence.
Vethri Vel, represented by lawyers Ranjit Singh Sandhu and Faazil Rahman, appealed for a good behaviour bond, citing the soft tissue injuries he sustained in the crash.
However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd Waffy Ismail requested the court to deliver a proportionate sentence, stressing that the accused's dangerous driving had resulted in the deaths of four people, leaving behind a three-year-old child who is now an orphan.
The defence informed the court that they would be filing an appeal at the Court of Appeal.

The Federal Court had previously fixed July 1 and 2 to hear the appeal against a Court of Appeal decision that allowed Najib to initiate a judicial review related to the addendum. In a 2-1 majority decision on Jan 6, the Court of Appeal remitted the case on Najib's claim of the existence of a royal addendum purportedly allowing him to serve the remainder of his six-year prison sentence under house arrest to the High Court to be heard on its merits. This decision overturned the High Court's earlier dismissal of Najib's application for leave to commence a judicial review regarding the alleged addendum. Najib is currently serving a six-year jail sentence in connection with the SRC International Sdn Bhd case, following the Federal Court's dismissal of his appeal and review application. In February last year, the Federal Territories Pardons Board reduced his initial 12-year jail sentence and fine of RM210 million to six years and a RM50 million fine.

Two ‘Datuk' figures nabbed over mining licence bribery
KOTA KINABALU (June 18): The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sabah has detained two individuals bearing the title 'Datuk' on suspicion of soliciting and receiving bribes amounting to approximately RM200,000 in connection with the issuance of mining exploration licences in the state. According to sources, the two male suspects — aged in their 30s and 60s — were arrested on Wednesday at around 9.45am and 11.50am. One was apprehended while giving his statement at the MACC Sabah office, while the other was picked up at MACC's headquarters in Putrajaya. 'The suspects, a businessman and a serving member of the State Legislative Assembly, are believed to have been involved in the corrupt dealings between 2023 and 2024. 'Preliminary investigations revealed that both individuals had allegedly solicited and received bribes from each other amounting to RM200,000, purportedly to facilitate the approval process of mining licence applications in Sabah,' the source said. When contacted, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed the arrests, stating that the case is being investigated under Section 16(b)(A) of the MACC Act 2009. He added that the businessman was released on bail after having his statement recorded, with bail set at RM100,000, of which RM10,000 was paid as a deposit, along with two guarantors. The state assemblyman was also released after his statement was recorded, with bail set at RM50,000 and one guarantor.

According to sources, both male suspects, aged in their 30s and 60s, were detained at 9.45am and 11.50am today.
