Vandals target Melbourne Hebrew Congregation synagogue
The heritage-listed Melbourne Hebrew Congregation synagogue was targeted by vandals on Sunday.
One piece of graffiti read 'Iran is da bomb' inscribed in a mushroom cloud, alongside another piece of vandalism that said 'free Palestine'.
'It is believed a wall of the Toorak Road premises was graffitied by an unknown person sometime on Sunday afternoon,' a police spokesman said.
'That was removed but unknown offenders again graffitied the building sometime on Sunday evening.'
The original graffitied message also said 'free Palestine'.
'There is absolutely no place at all in our society for anti-Semitic or hate-based symbols and behaviour,' the police spokesman said.
Police want anyone with information to come forward.
Rabbi Shlomo Nathanson told the Herald Sun: 'We're just frustrated and exhausted by all of this and we hope that is shared by members outside Jewish community'.
'We feel this to be an attack on the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation and it is unacceptable.
'While this is an offence to the Jewish community, it is our hope that people say 'not on my watch, not in my Australia',' the Rabbi said.
Chair of Australia's non-governmental Anti Defamation Commission, Dvir Abramovich, told NewsWire the graffiti represented an attack on religious freedom.
'There are moments that stop us cold. This is one of them,' Dr Abramovich said.
'This was not random. It was a calculated attempt to intimidate Jewish Australians.
'Let us be clear: an attack on a synagogue is an attack on every church, every mosque, every temple. It is an attack on the very idea that faith can be practised freely, without fear.'
The Premier labelled the graffiti 'disgraceful' and 'senseless'.
'It is just so vitally important that we do not allow conflict and violence overseas to divide us here in Melbourne and Victoria,' Jacinta Allan said.
The Melbourne Hebrew Congregation is a monumental temple on the high-traffic corner of Toorak Road and St Kilda Road, about 2km south of the CBD.
The building was constructed between 1928 and 1930. The synagogue is heritage-listed for its historical, aesthetic and social significance.
The graffiti referencing Iran was written about 12 hours after the US bombed Iranian facilities, which are suspected of being used to enrich uranium and develop nuclear weapons.

'Yet Albanese actually believed Abbas, an 89-year-old who hasn't held elections for 19 years .' Bolt said the 'biggest sick joke' in Mr Albanese's choice of Abbas as a partner in peace was the PA President's defence of Adolf Hitler. 'Two years ago (Abbas) defended Hitler, claiming the Nazi leader didn't kill six million Jews just because they were Jews, but in fact because of their social role,' Bolt said. 'Even madder is that Abbas… wrote a PhD when he was studying in the Soviet Union called The Connection Between the Nazis and the Leaders of the Zionist Movement, from 1933 to 1945, and this thesis is as sick as it sounds.' Bolt said Abbas had put forward in his thesis that Jewish leaders had conspired with Hitler in conducting the Jewish genocide before and during World War II. More embarrassing blather,' Bolt said. At a press conference on Wednesday, Mr Albanese dodged Sky News questioning on the demilitarisation of Hamas and failed to explain whether it was possible - despite it being a clear condition he placed for recognition. Mr Abbas, who has led the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organisation since 2004, has not faced a democratic election since 2005. He abolished the Palestinian parliament in 2007 following a violent split with Hamas and has ruled by decree ever since. In a 2023 speech to his Fatah party, Abbas claimed the Holocaust was 'not about antisemitism', instead blaming Jews' 'social role', such as involvement in finance. In the same speech, he claimed European Jews had no historical connection to the Middle East - a discredited antisemitic theory. He has also compared Israel to the Nazis, accusing it of lying 'like Goebbels', and has previously told German Chancellor Olaf Scholz Israel has committed '50 Holocausts' against Palestinians. The Palestinian Authority has also been marred by corruption, with polls suggesting its citizens are unsure about it taking control of a Palestinian state.

Neighbour speaks of horror after discovering bodies of pregnant woman and her partner in Melbourne
The neighbour who discovered the bodies of a pregnant woman and her partner has spoken of the horror at what he witnessed at the scene of the alleged murder. The 39-year-old Athena Georgopoulos and 50-year-old Andrew Gunn were found dead in their Mount Waverly home at 9.55pm on Monday night, with reports saying the pregnant woman's partner had been decapitated and his head mounted on a spike. The couple's bodies were discovered by neighbour Ben Scott Sandvik, who struggled to get out the words to describe what he had seen. "No one should have to come across what I saw down there … And nobody needs to live knowing that this sort of thing has happened to their families,' he told the Herald Sun. Victoria Police has arrested and charged 34-year-old homeless man Ross Judd over the 'targeted' attack, but Mr Scott Sandvik said the alleged perpetrator was also the victim of a broken system. 'You don't prevent this thing by punishing any harder. People like that need help,' he said. Tributes from family and friends have poured in for Ms Georgopoulos, who was five months pregnant at the time of her death. In a message posted to social media in Greek, the 39-year-old's mother spoke about the joy they had shared when her daughter discovered she was pregnant. 'My love, you left this life so quick and I still can't believe how happy you were in the last few days,' she said. 'We dreamed of the granddaughter you were going to bring into your life world and just like that everything disappeared by the murder that took your life and my granddaughters that you were bringing into this world in 4 months. 'No matter how much they have broken us apart, I will forever love you.' The couple's Melbourne home was graffiti messages including, "U R Gay", "Enough is Enough", "Betrayal", and 'Karma is not a menu". A Victoria Police spokesperson has confirmed investigators are looking into whether the graffiti is linked to the gruesome alleged murder. Victoria Police have requested a 10-week extension to prepare a brief of evidence in the case, which has been granted by the Court.

Man charged with murder after couple found dead in southeast Melbourne home
A man has been charged with the double murder of a couple found dead at a home in Melbourne's southeast. Police located the 39-year-old woman and 50-year-old man at the property on Adrienne Crescent in Mount Waverley shortly before 10pm on Monday. The couple has been identified as Athena Georgopoulos, who was five months pregnant with a baby girl, and her partner Andrew Gunn, The Herald Sun reports. A 34-year-old man was arrested hours after the alleged murders at Westall train station, which is about a 10-minute drive from the Mount Waverley property. Police have described the man as having no fixed address. He was charged with two counts of murder is expected to appear before Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. It has been reported Mr Gunn was decapitated in the alleged killing. Detective Inspector Dean Thomas told the media on Tuesday officers suspected the man charged with the pair's murder was known to them, and that one of them lived at the Mount Waverley property. 'It appears to be targeted and our suspect is known to the address,' he said. Inspector Thomas said officers received a call for a welfare check 'based on some yelling' from the property, and a second call minutes later. He said the man was located with two large dogs before his arrest. Images from the scene showed scrawled on a property, including betrayal', 'enough is enough' and 'karma'. 'Police are aware of graffiti on the property in Mount Waverley where the bodies of two people were located last night,' a police spokesman said. 'Homicide Squad detectives will work to determine if the graffiti is relevant to the murder investigation.'
